despite spanish being their first language, and tagalog coming soon after, kona finds it difficult to write and read either of them, given they had zero access to writings and never attended school, thus never properly learning them (and also, the newfound barriers they have to face with time differences makes things difficult, and a lot has changed over the past century in both languages). english, on the other hand, comes easier to them when looking at it, even if it’s utterly confusing in the long run, because they were actually taught it, by niylah and her family / friends.
