"Biology" - Chapter 13
Tumblr media
Vash/Meryl | Rating: MA-E | Chapters: 13/14
Things were tight on Ship 3, the refugee crisis taking a toll on available supplies across the planet. But Vash’s solar array held the promise of turning the tide in the fight against Knives, and with the recent discovery of long-missing ship 13 buried in the desert, they had the chance to potentially triple their resources overnight. But things never go as planned with Vash around; one mishap leads to another leads to another, and Vash and Meryl are forced to confront the feelings the Knives crisis caused them both to bury.

Twelve Years Ago
“Today, you're going to learn about grounding.”
Luida Leitner stood before her morning tutoring class. Using a white stylus, she wrote on a large, transparent screen. “You must learn how to block your partner's thoughts properly, especially as you age.” She turned toward the small group of students. “Does anyone here have any idea how grounding works?”
Meryl's hand shot up, and she started speaking before Luida could even call on her. “You create a doorway in your mind!”
Luida's smile was genuine, but she sighed and placed her hands on her hips. “While that is technically one way to go about it, please wait to answer after I call on you, Miss Meryl.”
A few other students snickered, and Meryl shrank back in her seat. “Sorry.” She still hadn't learned to control her impulsiveness when it came to answering questions in class, despite how many times Luida had corrected her.
But this was her favorite time of the day! For the next three months, Meryl and Vash were able to attend this class every Tuesday and Thursday. Which meant, they got to see each other in person more often. Meryl's mother had explained that as they grew older, they'd have more and more schooling together. After they turned fourteen, they’d enter the Academy, and they would get to see each other every day.
If only she could grow up faster.
Vash leaned closer as if he might whisper in her ear, but instead, he teased her through the bond. You gotta let some of us answer questions too, you know.
Meryl rolled her eyes. It's not my fault I know all the answers.
They shared a singular, oval shaped desk, their white chairs sitting hip to hip. The first day of class, Meryl had immediately plopped into the first desk on the front row, her notebook open and ready.
She loved school. Learning was so much fun, especially when it was with Vash and a tutor like Luida.
Luida began to draw on her screen. “A doorway is probably the most straightforward way to ground, but you can create anything in your mindscape to represent your bond. Say you really love going to the beach!” She drew a simple drawing of waves cresting a shore. “Maybe your mindscape looks like that. Or, maybe you prefer somewhere inside.” In fast, fluid strokes, she sketched what looked like a child’s bedroom. “For this exercise, I want you all to practice visualizing a space for just yourself. Don’t let your Unai know what you’re creating until the very end.”
Another boy raised his hand. “Can you give us more examples?”
Luida rattled off several, but Meryl had already tuned her out. She had the perfect idea.
Once everyone was ready, Luida instructed each Unai pair to sit opposite each other. The room filled with the sound of scraping desks and chairs.
“Sit with your feet firmly planted on the floor. Close your eyes. Breathe. That’s it.” Luida’s voice remained calm and even. “First, focus on your internal space, then slowly create the barrier.”
The room fell into an almost eerie silence. The only sound was the students’ breathing and Luida’s careful footsteps.
Meryl closed her eyes. As a test, she prodded at Vash in her mind, only to find access to him limited. He poked her back playfully, trying to push her away, and she sent him an image of her sticking her tongue out.
The silence stretched on. Meryl imagined herself as an architect inside the mindscape, pulling out blueprints and carpenter tools. She wanted her room to be perfect. It would resemble a beautiful library, with books upon books, and so many pillows, and a huge open window, and–
You’re supposed to be keeping it a secret, Vash said.
Meryl paused. She was, wasn’t she?
I can still hear and see your thoughts, Vash said gently. Try building your barrier first.
Oh. Okay. She readjusted herself in her mind’s eye. Okay, so no room. How about a wall? No, no, that’d look too stupid. Maybe the wall needed to be outside.
The mindscape shifted, suddenly revealing a bright red door that had been left open by a couple inches. Vash made a noise of surprise, and the door slammed shut, instantly knocking Meryl out of the mindscape.
Her eyes flew open. Wait—huh?
Vash gazed back at her, his brows furrowed with concern. Sorry, he said. I didn’t want you to see yet.
It’s fine, Meryl said, though her hands clenched into fists. This was going to be harder than she thought. Let me try again.
And try she did, but for whatever reason, the mental walls just wouldn’t hold. Every time she laid a new brick, a different one would collapse, sending the whole thing tumbling about her feet. Fifteen minutes passed, and she was still struggling. Stubborn tears rolled down her cheeks. No, no, she couldn’t cry! The other kids would notice and make fun of her.

“This is nice,” El declared one night as her mother, father, and aunt sat down to dinner at the heretofor rarely used dining table.“All we need is Uncle Vash.”
Uncle Vash had not yet been cleared to sit up straight and was currently asleep beneath a blanket of pain-killers.
“It is nice,” Nai agreed.
“Can it stay like this?” El asked. “After Uncle Vash gets better, I mean.”
No one dared question that Vash would ever get better. It was not up for discussion. He would get better despite the lingering doubt in the back of everyone’s mind. As for the first part of El’s question, the grownups exchanged looks.
“Why don’t you show her?” Nica suggested.
“Show me what?” Meryl asked, bemused.
