(just assume posts are unqueued until ive mentioned otherwise)
heres a bunch of random references in spore that i could think of. this is in no way comprehensive, just a random selection
some of this is thanks to the spore wiki references page
first off this is the only other media in this post that im familiar with (hello im a rayman fan). im pretty sure rattles is based on a rabbid, theyre shaped basically the same
(i picked the screenshot that you can make a tribal stage joke about lmao)
flesh eater might be a goomba honestky
from here on im not very familiar with any of the media referenced here. so forgive me if i get anything wrong
both the name of the Skexybeast part and the name of this maxis creature, Skex, clearly reference the Skeksis from the dark crystal, which also are notably birdlike
a lot of the parts reference something. the vehicle body Star Deployer looks like the Star Destroyer from star wars, and the name of the part clearly alludes to it
the Village Folks achievement has sa bunch of creatures very clearly spelling out YMCA. internally this achievement is also called villagepeople, the name of the group that made(?) the original ymca song
Chuchoko is named like the chocobo from final fantasy , similar looking birds
these might be referencing tweety from looney tunes. might be coincidental
also there were three references in a row here ! some references are so obvious (romeo and juliet, and elvis) theyre barely worth mentioning
Mi Casa really closely resembles the simpsons house
when saving a creature, the animation of the it looking off to the side actually has it nod during the fade out, which is only seen if you save it too fast after starting the editor for the fade to happen. cells dont nod but they blink a couple of times
this is easy to encounter if youre using this one trick to disguise gates as creatures and cells in adventures
a rather strange glitch that involves trying to shorten the creature's spine while a leg is placed as far as it will let you while still removing the vertebra tip. its finicky, but if you do it right, the parts at the tip will float
the parts will now technically become attached to the outermost vertebrae tip instead, where it was shortened, and will now animate strangely
Well now their in-game look is a bit outdated, because now they have a bit different stance and don't have those arm wings, but still
Also they have a scientist archetype and I made them have like 200 colonies or even more (but they still haven't meet the Grox yet because I was kinda scared after they destroyed nearly all of my colonies of my another species when I went to the galactic core a bit too early lmao)
No but I think it's so interesting how well Cambrian creatures translate into Spore, the game that always gets made fun of for how weird the creatures look.
unused GonzagoGL models from Data/models/Underwater (viewed in SculptGL)
note that there are other models that appear unused, such as the tribal creature models, but are actually used in other launch states. there is nothing for the underwater models
notes about each model under the read more
jellyfish is properly composed out of parts, with each eye being three "meshes". the eyestalk is also a different mesh from the bell, which is different from the spikes on it, and the tentacles, which are all fully modeled (but the eyeballs arent). so here the individual parts are clear
rare_fish is also composed out of individual parts, including a strangely long mouth mesh that embeds into the body much further than is normally achievable in spore. the eyes are composed out of only two meshes, with both eyelids sharing one mesh and the eyeball being fully modeled
swimmingtripod suggests the willosaur's official name is, in fact, tripod (remember tripod neuvo in the final game too?) the eyes are composed out of three meshes again with separated eyelids, and each fin is also composed out of four meshes. there is not much to say here. but having an official willosaur model is still pretty cool
underwater_flora is also composed out of many individual meshes. the stalk is a mesh of its own, each leaf is composed out of two meshes
underwater_rock and underwater_rock_small are wholly unremarkable, besides the fact that the larger rock is composed out of quads, and the smaller rock out of triangles
whale seems to be unremarkable, but its eyes are really weird. both of the eyes' eyelids share only one singular mesh clipping into the body heavily, and each eyeball is separate. the mouth part is also really long, similarly to rare_fish
none of the models have textures, or any other data seen in their obj through something like notepad++ (unlike some of the other models in gonzagogl)
they also seem to have interesting uv mapping however. i cant see how its properly mapped at all (sculptgl's diffuse export clearly isnt exporting the mapping properly, and i couldnt wrap my head around blender) but it does seem to resemble how creatures in the final game tend to be uv mapped, with the body/limbs being composed out of multiple chunks
Willosaur propaganda for @voidspace-bubble's spore creature tournament!
They are the first creature known to have gone through all of spore's stages, Including the unused aquatic stage. They were made by Will Wright himself to demonstrate the game and appear in one of Spore's trailers prominently! They even do a funny little dance.
They have a super unique and interesting design, Too! It's really alien, And lends itself super well to fanart, Whether you draw them cartoonish or realistic. They're very iconic and recognizable.
There's a damn good reason these guys are considered the de-facto mascot of spore, And I think they deserve that title! I think willosaur deserves to pass to the next round :)
One of my favorite pieces of spore concept art, Willosaur variants by Christian Scheurer :)
Spore's concept art is super underappreciated. Definitely think more people should pick up the art books.
