The extreme efforts of broadcasting in Extreme E
(Motorsport news): Jenny has worked at AMW for almost three years now, and the company, along with North One, has created XE Studios, which is notable for delivering the championship’s broadcast product. She is part of the on-site production team of just 15 and works with producers and production staff, Extreme E teams and sponsors, technical partners alongside managing production schedules and budgets, permits and much, much more.
Tumblr media
We asked Jenny how a broadcast product like Extreme E is created from the most remote corners of the planet. She says, “the action is captured on-site using a mixture of operated cameras, fixed minicameras, point-of-view and several ENG cameras, which equates to 30 cameras, plus four onboards per car. More than 60 cameras are used in total. We capture a live race cut and non-live content around the races to send back to London via satellite. There are about 30 satellite feeds in total.”
The London studio is an important structure of the broadcast and the hub of pulling the production together. Jenny explains, “the London studio takes the 30 or so feeds from the site and masters the programme. The team layers the camera angles, Command Centre point of views, replays, sporting graphics, augmented and virtual graphics, the presenter, commentators and so on to create a finished, formatted programme complete with pre-produced content ready for transmission to the world.”
The plan of a remote broadcast wasn’t by accident, though. This is all part of Extreme E’s strategy to be as sustainable as possible. By creating the broadcast in this way, it reduces the number of people needed on site and, therefore, travel and carbon emissions. Currently there is a core technical team of around 25 required to set up and operate equipment on site, and a small production team of 15 including presenter Layla Anne Lee. The equipment itself fits into two sea containers which goes to each location via Extreme E’s ship the St. Helena. This also reduces the championship’s carbon footprint as sea freight is less carbon intensive than air freight.
There are also remote teams in Amsterdam who manage the augmented reality graphics plus Al Kamel’s team in Barcelona who are involved in making the sporting graphics. All of this is then fed back to the team in London, which consists of around 15 people including the championship’s main commentators Jennie Gow and Andrew Coley.
But why are the commentators not on site with all the action? Jenny explains, “the programme is being made in London, so it makes sense to have the commentators close to the production team. Jennie and Andrew can throw to our reporter Layla and the guests on-site and dial in contributors from anywhere in the world, which included X44 Founder Lewis Hamilton in Senegal. One of the big advantages of the London hub is its connectivity and the delays involved are small, despite all the signals going backwards and forwards to location by satellite.”
Also read: Mahindra Racing record fifth victory in Formula E
Putting on a production like this from some of the remotest locations in the world is complicated and Jenny says, “from an operational point of view the harsh environments test the equipment and the team to the limit. However, the payoff is that the hard work puts the production in a great position to capture stunning locations anywhere in the world. Every setting comes with its own obstacles, from the canyons and sand of AlUla to the humidity and saltiness of the Senegalese coast  so the kit must be super resilient. The locations are so remote there is no option of sending footage back over fibre, so satellite connectivity is the only option.”
In Motorsports news the next challenge is Greenland at the end of August. Jenny says, “we are most looking forward to the expansiveness of the race location and the backdrop of the Russell Glacier. We are racing in an environment that is changing before our eyes, and a location that really hammers home the climate crisis to our viewers. This is by far the most remote location we will race in. It’s going to push the satellite equipment to the limit because the location is so far north, but it will look spectacular, and we couldn’t do it without the hugely talented team of producers, engineers, camera operators and drone operators.”
When asked what it is like to work on Extreme E, Jenny says, “it is truly incredible. I love to travel and to be able to see these places and call it work is amazing. I supported the Extreme E launch back in 2019 so it’s been a great experience watching it grow and go from strength-to-strength.”

Ben Sawyer returns to Sydney Sixers for WBBL|07
Tumblr media
Cricket news: Following his full-time position as an assistant with the Australian Women's Cricket Team, veteran mentor Ben Sawyer stepped aside from his post as head coach of the Sydney Sixers' WBBL team. He will return for WBBL|07.
Because of the limited duration before the competition and the respite in international obligations during the WBBL season, Cricket Australia agreed to Sawyer's request to coach the Sixers for the season.
This season, Sawyer will join fellow Australian Assistant Coach Shelley Nitschke as a WBBL Head Coach, managing the Sixers and Scorchers, respectively.
Following The Hundred in the United Kingdom, where he is now coaching the Birmingham Phoenix, Sawyer will return to Australia for the Australia-India international series before joining the Sixers for the WBBL.
Shawn Flegler, Cricket Australia Female High Performance Manager, said: “We have agreed to Cricket New South Wales’ request for Ben to coach the Sydney Sixers in the WBBL this season,” Flegler said.
“Ben is passionate about growing as a coach and we're committed to supporting opportunities to help in the development of our coaches.”
Sawyer expressed gratitude for the opportunity to extend his relationship with the Sixers, which began prior to the WBBL|01.
“I am very excited that Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW have been able to come to an agreement here so that I can continue to work with the Sixers this summer,” Sawyer said.
“The decision allows me to continue my development as a coach and also work with the exciting talent in the squad we have assembled for the Sixers.”

Western Australia gear up for massive domestic season
Cricket Australia revealed the full domestic fixture for the 2021-22 Marsh Sheffield Shield, Marsh One-Day Cup, and Women's National Cricket League today, confirming the Western Australian Men's and Women's domestic schedules.
Tumblr media
The Western Australian women are the main winners of the WNCL calendar, with four of their competition matches scheduled to take place on home soil, including three at the WACA Ground.
The team will kick off their domestic season on Thursday, September 23 at Adelaide's Karen Rolton Oval against South Australia, before returning to the WACA Ground to face WNCL champions Queensland.
WA will play their final regular-season match at the fan-favorite Lilac Hill before the WNCL Final on Sunday, March 6th, in a WNCL first.
Following a shortened season last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cricket Australia has confirmed that the Sheffield Shield will resume a full home and away schedule this summer, assuming that the public health climate permits it.
Starting well in a travel-heavy first block of games can help WA's Shield ambitions by putting the team in a good position for the second half of the season, with four of the team's final five matches scheduled to be played at the WACA Ground.
WA's Shield campaign will begin on Tuesday, September 28 against South Australia at Karen Rolton Oval, with the Final set to commence on Saturday, March 26 and broadcast on Foxtel.
The Western Australians will get their feet wet early in the One Day Cup, with a rematch against the New South Wales Blues at the WACA Ground on Sunday 12 September. It is one of four matches that will be televised on Foxtel.
The team will finish their season with a day-night match against Queensland at home before the Foxtel Final on Sunday, February 27.
On Kayo and cricket.com.au, all men's domestic matches will be webcast live.
Prior to the Dettol ODI series, the WACA Ground will host a tour match between the Men's Cricket Australia XI and New Zealand on Thursday, January 27.
WA Men’s Head Coach Adam Voges said,“It’s great to have a full domestic schedule confirmed for the season ahead, we are really looking forward to building on our success in the one-day format and there’s no doubt our sights are firmly fixed on winning a Sheffield Shield for our proud State.
“We have retained the bulk of our squad for 2021-22 and we have great depth, which will naturally provide plenty of opportunity for the young, emerging players to step up this season.
“The pre-season is going well, we got a very driven and focused group and we all can’t wait to get started.”
WA Women’s Head Coach Becky Grundy said,“We have a very well-rounded, talented team with a lot of depth and are thrilled with the quality talent we’ve added to our squad for the season ahead.
“Last season saw some incredible individual performances, but our campaign wasn’t what we had planned or hoped for, and we will work hard to bounce back as we aim for a second WNCL title in three seasons.”

The UN issued a solemn request for the Olympic Truce to be observed in Tokyo in 2020
Following the resolution voted in December 2019, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Volkan Bozkir, made a solemn appeal to UN Member States for the implementation of the Olympic Truce during the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The Olympic Truce must be observed from July 16 to September 12, 2021, which is seven days before the start of the Olympic Games and seven days after the Paralympic Games.
Tumblr media
“The Olympic Movement aspires to contribute to a peaceful future for all humankind through the educational value of sport, in particular youth,” said Bozkir in the appeal. “The Games will bring together athletes from all parts of the world in the greatest of international sports events as a means to promote peace, mutual understanding and goodwill among nations and peoples — goals that are also part of the founding values of the United Nations. For the second time, the IOC Refugee Olympic Team will participate under the Olympic flag in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, acting as a powerful symbol of inclusion and our shared humanity.”
“The Olympic Games are the only event today that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “This is why we are so grateful to the UN Member States for their support of the Olympic Truce resolution. With this resolution, they are supporting the values and principles that unite us. In this Olympic spirit of universality, solidarity and peace, I invite you all to join hands and to celebrate our unity in all our diversity at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and beyond. Let us demonstrate together that our shared humanity is stronger than all the forces that want to divide us.”
The resolution was passed unanimously at the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly entitled “Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic Ideal” and was co-sponsored by 186 of the UN's 193 member states, reflecting the UN's international community's acknowledgement of sport's power and the Olympic Games' relevance in bringing the world together in peaceful competition and promoting hope for a better future.
The Olympic Truce – “Ekecheira” – has a long history of ensuring a cease-fire in all hostilities, allowing athletes and spectators to safely travel to and participate in the Olympic Games. The resolution maintains that the Olympic principles of peace, solidarity, and respect are as relevant now as they were almost 3,000 years ago in Greece, when the first Olympic Games were hosted.
The Olympic Truce's main goals are to unite young people for the promotion of the Olympic ideal, to use sport to help build bonds between communities in conflict, and to provide a window of opportunity for conversation and reconciliation in general.

SLC dismisses Arjuna Ranatunga's remarks, states the Indian side touring the country is a 'strong squad'
Tumblr media
In the latest cricket news, Sri Lanka Cricket Board on Friday issued a press statement to dismiss Arjuna Ranatunga’s remark where the former Sri Lankan skipper said that India sending a second string side is an insult to the country's cricket.
Ranatunga’s statement didn’t go well with the Sri Lankan cricket board which is currently struggling with contract issues with its cricketers.
Replying to Ranatunga’s remarks, SLC said: “Out of the 20-member India squad, 14 players have represented India across all formats or in some form and not a second-string team as claimed."
“This is the latest norm in the cricketing world, especially the full ICC member countries, as they maintain specialist squads and players for each format of the game," the statement added.
Earlier Ranatunga had said: “This is a second string Indian team and their coming here is an insult on our cricket. I blame the current administration for agreeing to play with them due to television marketing needs."
India is scheduled to play a three match T20I and ODI series in Sri Lanka. India is touring with a young side, in absence of regular veterans who are currently touring England. The squad features six uncapped players like Devdutt Padikkal, Chetan Sakariya, Nitish Rana, K Gowtham, Varun Chakravarthy and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Shikhar Dhawan has been announced captain, while Rahul Dravid, the head coach.
