Five Nights at Freddy's (2023) Spoiler Free Review
Tumblr media
"A troubled security guard begins working at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. During his first night on the job, he realizes that the night shift won't be so easy to get through. Pretty soon he will unveil what actually happened at Freddy's."- IMDb
Verdict: 6/10
Tumblr media
Well, they finally did it. The movie came out. You certainly can't deny that, but was the movie worth the wait?
Well, for fans, I'm sure it was a great movie. I'll go ahead and say that the art design for the animatronics, costumes, and sets were great. I think even the characters were moderately likeable.
I think there was a lot of potential here, but the movie fails to make the uninitiated really care.
The plot feels messily put together and the PG-13 rating really makes the movie feel like it lacks any bite or tension. It also doesn't earn many of its jumpscares or any of the plot twists.
I didn't outright hate this movie. It just felt painfully average, so it's hard to articulate all of the shortcomings.
You could say it's because it was made for the fans, but it's quite obvious that Blumhouse REALLY wants this to be their next franchise.
They want to introduce more people to this world, but all they really managed to do was to please already existing fans.
That's fine, but for me it sits pretty low down on the list of 2023's horror rankings.

Ice Nine Kills Hints at a “Silver Scream 3D”
Tumblr media
Ice Nine Kills recently brought their Horrorwood saga to an end and have promised and hinted at things to come that fans should be excited for.
In a now deleted premiere video, Ice Nine Kills debuted their newest music video for their song Meat & Greet.
The song is based off Silence of the Lambs and features lead singer—Spencer Charnas— masquerading as both Buffalo Bill and Hannibal the Cannibal.
Additionally, after the music video ends it transitions to wrapping up the story that was first started when the album released.
Welcome to Horrorwood, also known as Silver Scream 2, is played off as an album discovered by a homicide unit. Spencer is suspected of the brutal slaying of his fiancé as detailed by the albums “Opening Night” track.
The ending of Meat & Greet answers all of the questions, but after watching an post-premiere interview it seems that there may be some open ends.
Fans got the chance to ask Spencer and other key creatives in the making of the storyline questions.
Questions were asked about how the band chooses movies to base songs off of, their method of production, and various other topics.
However, Spencer had a question to ask of his own.
He asked the crowd how they’d feel about a “Silver Scream 3D.”
The crowd responded with applause, so it seems that the band plans to continue with the horror movie concept albums.
It’s quite clear that horror is one of Spencer Charnas’ passions, so it makes sense that he’d continue to push the band towards making more Silver Screams.
While fans wait for more updates, they’ll have an orchestral version of Welcome to Horrorwood releasing on October 31st to tide them over.

Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls (2023) Review
Tumblr media
Verdict: 7/10
“Fledgling occultist Onyx and a group of worshipers attend a once-in-a-lifetime ritual at their idol BARTOK THE GREAT'S mansion.”- IMDb
Tumblr media
When I saw Bloody Disgusting promoting this movie and it’s one day theater showing I was interested in how it’d turn out, so I made plans.
Was the movie worth seeing? Did it manage to stretch an extremely one note act into a feature length film?
Sort of.
I think the biggest weakness of this movie is it’s incredibly drawn out first act. A first act should set up a movie without drawing the movie to a glacial pace.
Many of the characters are one-note and overacted which makes it hard for audiences to care about where this story could be going.
This includes Onyx, and your enjoyment of this movie will depend entirely upon how much of his terrified and awkward mannerisms you can handle.
If I were to judge this movie by the first half alone, it would’ve been near the bottom of my list.
However, midway it picks up and the film finally catches its comedic stride which is heightened by the excellent use of practical effects, callbacks, and what feels like an actual rising action.
The practical effects are the best part of the movie though. The creature designs just scream 80’s nostalgia, and seeing them in motion is a delight.
By the time I walked out of the theater, I was conflicted on what to give this. I think the end really justifies the means here.
I wouldn’t recommend this movie to anyone who isn’t familiar with Onyx’s skit, but to anyone willing to give it a shot I encourage you to make that leap.
It was a one night only theater experience, but it will likely make its way to ScreamBox sooner or later.

Saw X (2023) Spoiler Free Review
Tumblr media
Verdict: 8/10
"A sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable"- IMDb
Tumblr media
Saw X seems to have surprised everyone, critics included, by actually being a worthwhile addition to the franchise. Does it live up to the hype?
In my opinion, sort of! What fans and casuals alike should know before going in to see this movie is that it's unlike any other Saw movie out there.
The movie largely focuses on John as a character and attempts to transport the viewers into his shoes. It does a great job at this, and I believe the character-driven aspects of this movie are what carry it to an 8/10 on my rating.
However, fans of Saw may not feel satisfied with how the movie is lacking many elements from what those would call the "soap opera" era of Saw: non-linear story telling, massive twists, callbacks, etc.
This is admittedly something that I miss from Saw. The past 3 entries, including X, have all been fairly self-contained and I hope that we can one day continue the story that 7 left us with.
While Saw X doesn't bring us back to those days, I do believe it adds a meaningful story to help flesh out John and Amanda that may have viewers tearing up for the first time in a Saw movie.
And of course, the traps are a bloody good time!

The Passenger (2023) Review
Verdict: 8/10
"A man is forced to face his fears and confront his troubled past. He must find a way to survive when his co-worker snaps and goes on a violent killing spree."- IMDb
Tumblr media
The Passenger is a finely crafted drama soaked in high tension and violence galore. Violence isn't the selling point here, instead the talents of Kyle Gallner and Randolph Bradley are what make this movie for me.
It's the tense dynamics of these two which kept me invested. Every second feels believable even if it's easy to see where their character arcs will take them. Near the end I'd actually grown fond of seeing their newfound brotherhood. Anyone with fast food experience may also relate. Hopefully not too much.
The supporting actors also do a great job, although a few characters feel cliché. They didn't detract from the experience, since it moves fairly quickly past the intro, before it finally settles into the journey
Overall, this movie might feel a bit too close to a crime thriller for horror fans, but if you can get past that and don't mind movies that are slower or more character driven then I'd highly recommend strapping in for the ride.
As for me, The Passenger easily parks itself near the top of my 2023 releases list.
