hello! my name is kes, he/him, mid-20s. this is a casual bird photography blog, will be posting/reblogging both my own photos and others'. i am an avid birder and photographer, and love IDing birds if anyone wants to submit a mystery bird! or their own photography :)
the pacific baza is a slender, medium-sized hawk found in australia, indonesia, papua new guinea, the solomon islands, and east timor. they are the only new guinean raptor with a crest. somewhat unusually for a hawk, this species is omnivorous, and feeds on fruits and vegetation in addition to lizards, birds, and other small prey. females are slightly heavier than males, with more brown coloration on their uppersides, sometimes with more dark barring on their secondary flight feathers. both sexes are primarily gray, brown, and white. this species is largely non-migratory.
this august I also did #AvianAugust alongside doggust
I chose a simple style in order to be able to do them fast, it proved the right call. I was indeed pretty fast and I'm really liking the result!
And here is my icon! Muscovy ducks are so pretty, and I just love this individual. The males with really intense caruncles (the warts around their face) kind of creep me out. Those caruncles help keep their feathers clean while they forage in muddy water.
Starting out this blog with my banner photo! This is one of my favorite photos I've ever taken, and one of my best in-flight photos (although this egret had just taken off, and so was not truly in flight). I watched this egret hunting on Lake Apopka, one of my favorite birding locations near Orlando.
