He avoided the festival now; picking up his siblings after partying with friends or before a shift at work. He quite liked that arrangement, but for some odd reason this year was different. After being begged to go, he reluctantly agreed, dressed up in a silly little ghost outfit out of a dare, and put on his best shoes to go out on a family adventure. Or as much of a family adventure one could have while ones’ parents slept the day away. He didn’t blame them; he was pretty tired too after spending the night with friends, though staying up for three days straight with them seemed a little odd to him.
After convincing the teens to run off and find their friends, the brunette looked around for his. He was not expecting to see a lot of his friends around, but maybe one familiar face would save the day. Even a frequent customer at the bar would work, or some classmate in his coding class or whatever.
When his eyes locked onto somebody he knew, Felix swiftly approached them in his costume. The way the other person smiled at him made him laugh. “Hey, this costume was a dare….” he quickly defended himself, even if the costume was shockingly comfortable.

Spencer had shit the bed when it came to returning to Drayton. All his life, things had just appeared to him: good grades, nice cars, pretty girls. He was good enough at everything and he didn’t have to try. Flash forward to now: everyone who was ‘good enough’ to leave had already done so. All of his friends growing up were now in New York, or Los Angeles. Somewhere glamorous with fancy new jobs and shiny new friends. Spencer was here. With everyone who had been left behind. And when he returned, his drive to do more than attend his 8-5 shifts at his dad’s firm was nonexistent.
Of course, he regretted this now that it was Halloween and the Autumn Festival and he actually wanted to do things. He just had no one to do them with. Spencer was secretly grateful when Felix approached him. They hadn’t exactly run with the same crowd, given Felix was a little older than him and from a different side of the tracks. But a smiling face offering conversation and camaraderie was better than a smiling face seeing right through him.
“Hey man--” Spencer zipped up his black hoodie to reveal the skeleton printed on it. “No judgement here. This was 100% willing,” he explained with a grin. He gestured vaguely at Felix’s costume with his beer bottle. “You trying to put the ‘boo’ in ‘booze’ this year?”

Pumpkin carving had been an important part of her own childhood, and Eleanor was determined to give her son that experience. Balancing Moses on her hip, she reached with one hand to take a flyer, checking that small children were allowed to participate with an adult’s assistance before committing to anything.
Not seeing an age restriction, she glanced over at the person beside her and smiled politely. “Sure. Why not? I think we’ll make quite the team.” She reached up to gently extract her son’s hand from her hair before it found its way into his mouth. “This is Moses, and I’m Eleanor. What’s your name?”
Tumblr media
Spencer smiled, first at the woman, then briefly at her son. Spencer didn’t know the first thing about babies or little kids. He didn’t interact with him, mostly because he didn’t have to. But, he figured he’d lived his life one way for so long; what harm could getting out of your comfort zone do?
“Spencer. Nice to meet you, Ella. And Moses--” he started, gazing back down at the toddler on her hip. A chill went down his spine as he briefly remembered when he himself envisioned a life with kids with Maya. Falling in love young and fast makes you get ahead of yourself, he supposed, but it only reminded him of how alone he felt now in this world. He blinked. Appearances, he reminded himself. “Moses.” He repeated, his eyes returning to Eleanor’s, a smile spreading on his face. “He’s got some pretty big shoes to fill with a name like that,” he teased. “Family name, yeah?” he guessed.

❛ FIRST TEN SIGNATURES RECEIVE $500 OFF NOVEMBER’S RENT, ❜ that’s what the sign at Charli’s booth said. Handwritten with a big ol’ Sharpie Magnum, nice and bold on a sheet of printer paper snagged from the rental office, she’d penned it herself some ten minutes before tracking down a folding chair and sticking herself smack-dab in the heart of the festivities.
❛ COURTESY OF DRAYTON APARTMENTS MANAGEMENT AND THE KINDNESS OF MY OWN HEART, ❜ said the rest of the thing.
And okay it wasn’t technically a booth ( nor would the first ten be signing for anything other than shits and giggles ) , was really just Charli perched cross-legged on a metal chair with a clipboard and a purple gel pen and a mug of hard cider and that stupid sign taped to her knee so people could see it — certainly not a booth at all, see, because you probably had to be approved to get one of those ( by the town? God? Jimmy Smits? no idea ) and approval she had not gotten. But if you needed a sign-off on a rickety old chair and some office supplies, well… Maezl tov, she ain’t goin’ anywhere.
❝ All right, kids. Come ‘n get it. ❞

Living at home for the past six months had done something to Spencer. It wasn’t long ago he was King of the Dorms, then the God of Phi Psi. He lived in a house not far from campus with his lacrosse bros, lawn littered with emptied forties, girls’ underwear and bras from one-night-stands past hanging from the stairs banister. Now? He was back in his childhood room, a slave to routine and the metaphorical sounds of helicopter blades as his parents hovered around him.
Did you take your meds yet? Have you worked out yet today? You shouldn’t drink so much, you know what the doctor says.
While he had the money, thanks to Helicopter Pilot Dad, he just hadn’t pushed himself to moving out. Maybe that was the depression. It left him wallowing in bed for as long as he could, or scrolling through Reddit and Instagram like a zombie without retaining any information. Spencer stood in front of Charlie with his hands in his pockets, studying her sign and her stool with a bemused expression.
“Trying to fill all those empty studios, hm?” He asked, toying with the idea of escaping his parents’ home.

it was not unusual for her to hang out with people slightly younger than her  ,  seeing as she always found her peers to be verging on the boring side  .  perhaps it was due to the fact that she had been through a difficult childhood  ,  her heart remained young  &  therefore there was no need for her to fit into a certain age group  .  the girl raised an elbow to rest on his shoulder as she leaned closer to inspect the google search findings  ,  with which she was not all too impressed by  .  ❛  i think we should try our luck with the spooky theme  ,  if we manage to pull this off  &  actually scare  some of those  ,  then it will be a mission accomplished  .  ❜  the girl proposed as she extended a finger to point at a a group of children running around in their halloween costumes  ,  something that she never really had the chance to enjoy  .  ❛  i might have to add that i’ve never done this before  ,  so you’re gonna have to show me the ropes  .  ❜  she mused  ,  a soft chuckle bubbling across her lips as she proceeded to lock his phone  &  turned to face the main operator of this attempt  .
Spencer nodded along at her suggestion, agreeing that everything that turned up in the results was...vanilla. Basic. That’s what sold on Pinterest, he supposed. However Pinterest worked. His gaze followed her finger, and small smile cracking on his face as some school children dressed each as one of the many Marvel characters ran by.
“Oh yeah, we’ve gotta give them something to defeat,” he chuckled. “If I was a hack, I’d say we should make Thanos. But I’m not a total sell-out yet and I’m humble enough to know I don’t have the skill.” He joked before tapping his finger on one of the images. “What about this one?” He asked. Spencer snagged a permanent marker off the table, popping the lid off with his teeth and holding the pumpkin in his other hand. “Forsft, we gouaa draa it,” he said trying to roll the cap over in his lips to speak more clearly. He gestured with the pen on the pumpkin before setting it down on the table. “You draw,” he said, giving her the phone and the marker. “I’ll go grab the sharp stuff?”

amanda attending an event called  autumn fair  &  festival  ,  now that was unheard of  .  she wasn’t one to socialize too much  ,  mostly due to the lack of budget of her living  ,  yet she found this to be an opportunity to rekindle her connections around town  .  although she hadn’t fully grown up in the area  ,  she’d been a local for numerous years  &  she had had her fair share of acquaintances  .  now making her away across the festive mood of younger children  ,  she came across the pumpkin carving station only to spot a familiar figure acknowledging her  .   with no further thoughts  ,  she flashed a gentle smile  ,  cracking her knuckles carefully  . ❛  i highly doubt that i will be of any use whatsoever  ,  but i guess it’s worth trying  .  though i must warn you  ,  i am quite competitive  ,  so i expect nothing but the best from my partner  .  ❜  the girl chuckled  ,  elbow softly nudging his side playfully  .  in an attempt to prepare herself  ,  she rolled up her sleeves neatly  ,  revealing almost a sleeve of tattoos  .  ❛  so what’s the plan  ,  cap  ?  ❜  the brunette queried  ,  deep brown hues traveling his as she nodded  .
“Okay, low skill set and high expectations. We’ve got this,” Spencer’s lips twitched into a good-humored smile. He’d always been good at anything he tried, albeit he never really tried at art. He was pretty sure he had stopped pumpkin carving when his folks finally loosened his leash and left him to his own devices with his friends once he was old enough. He nodded his head over to the pile of pumpkins to choose from. “First thing’s first, we’ll need a canvas,” he said, pulling out his phone and googling pumpkin carving designs. “Then a vibe. Spooky? Arty-farty? Funny?” He leaned over closer to Amanda, showing her his screen and scrolling. He hadn’t spent much time with her before. All he could think was damn, I wish she had been my physiotherapist when I played lacrosse in high school. It wouldn’t have added up, but a boy could dream.

This wasn’t Spencer’s first Autumn Fair & Festival in Drayton. Walking down the blocked off streets hit him with a flash of nostalgia-- wearing his Spiderman costume and chasing after his sister, being fourteen and smashing pumpkins in the alleyway with his friends. Some memories were endearing while others he looked back and cringed-- boys could be so stupid and destructive sometimes. He hadn’t come in four years though, he had been in school, schmoozing at parties at night and frantically flipping through textbooks before midterms in the morning. Hours had been filled with to-do lists and people to see. Now that he was back home, though, that wasn’t so much the case. Wake up, shower, meds, work, come home, eat, sleep. Start over. Maybe today would be a good way to reconnect with people he hadn’t spoken to since he left for college four years ago.
He lingered by the pumpkin carving station, picking up a flyer for the carving competition. He turned to the person next to him, flashing the flyer. “I haven’t carved a pumpkin since I can’t remember when. What do you say? Team up and give it a shot?”

BIOGRAPHY
Spencer was the boy with the silver spoon in his mouth while his hands reached out, expecting more. His father was the cofounder and CEO of one of Colorado’s leading investment firms, Cohen & Foster. He grew up in Vivid Springs, with a pool in his backyard, a golden retriever, and was wont for naught. He was always just good enough at everything— good grades, good lacrosse player, well-liked. He didn’t stir the pot and was a boy his parents could be proud of. While he played the part, Spencer always felt like something was just missing. He didn’t have the drive to become class president in high school, he didn’t step up when the lacrosse team needed a new captain. He would have been a good fit for these things, but somehow, even knowing he could have them if he just gave an inch, it wasn’t worth the minimal effort. He followed through with the motions and let his dad pull some strings for Spencer to be admitted to the school of Business and Economics at University of Southern California.
There, Spencer thought he found a purpose. Not in his studies, but in Maya. Spencer had dated and been with girls in high school, of course, but Maya was different. He fell in love with her and let that be the cure of all of his uncertainties about life. If he needed to work, it was so he and Maya could chase their dreams, travel, buy a house, whatever she wanted. If Maya liked a shirt, then he would wear it. He could imagine a life for himself, taking care of her and being taken care of by her. They dated for nearly all of college until Maya told Spencer she needed space. She needed to be single. She needed to experience being an  fully. She didn’t want to be “that girl with the boyfriend all the time” and explained that that had been her identity in high school. Spencer was crushed. He understood what she was saying and her reasons: she needed to find herself, who she was without being tied to someone else. But Spencer couldn’t relate. The sky wasn’t blue without Maya. Spencer made it through his finals by the skin of his teeth. His smile didn’t reach his eyes in his graduation photos. Instead of looking for jobs like his peers were, he lay in his bed all day. His parents told him they weren’t going to fund him living in California with no job or even effort anymore. They told Spencer to move back home, his dad gave him a job at his company, and set Spencer up with a psychiatrist. Now, six months after his break-up and with the help of anti-depressants, Spencer is starting to feel more himself. In some ways, it’s good: he’s good at things, he’s socialising, he’s working. In other ways, that void is still there. Despite being back at home and with a job, Spencer still feels his lack of direction eating at him. He doesn’t know what it will take for him to feel inspired again, and is searching for something to ignite him the way Maya did.
