Mushroom pins are very similar to spool pins in the way that they behave. These pins get their name because they vaguely resemble a mushroom. They are slightly tapered and it is this that differentiates them from a spool pin. Because of this slope, a mushroom pin will gradually allow the plug to rotate as pressure is placed on the pin until bottom ridge catches at the shear line and falsely sets

Lock picking has many negative connotations associated with it and it’s understandable why. The very essence of lock picking is to undermine and compromise security, which is commonly associated with criminal activity. But in reality, the high majority of lock pickers are either hobbyists or those who want to understand and better their own security. Regardless of why an individual chooses to learn the craft of lock picking, one thing is certain. To the lock picker, the world is an open door and to the survivalist this can mean everything. Here are a few examples of why this skill is valuable.

The housing is what contains the entirety of the of lock and hold everything together. The plug is where the key insert is located and contains a line of holes in which the key pins and driver pins are located and held down by the springs.

Saturday night, I met up with the Longhorn Lockpicking Club, at the Spider House Café in downtown Austin, Texas. It is a group of about 15 different members that pick locks, drink beer, eat burgers, and talk new security exploits they have learned.
