Lifes Term Review of JAY GARRICK: THE FLASH #6
If you want to see the “Dawn of DC” at it’s best, look no further than JAY GARRICK: THE FLASH. This mini-series has shown respect for the OG Flash while mixing in the new “lost” daughter Judy Garrick and making their adventures into must-read stories. Writer Jeremy Adams has given us a finale that begs for an ongoing series. This issue is one of the most powerful stories I’ve read in a long time. Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump! SPOILERS AHEAD! This issue starts with the best splash page featuring Jay Garrick…ever. The raw emotion, the determination, and the amazing power of Jay Garrick are captured so well that I can’t imagine anything better. Jay is on the way to rescue Judy, but Doctor Elemental throws everything…and I mean everything in the way. Here’s where Jeremy Adams handles the character so well. We see a powerful hero feeling every bit of his age, worried that even his best effort may not be enough. Jay pushes himself beyond anything he may have believed he could do, willing to sacrifice anything and everything to save Judy. The battle is epic, with Jay giving his last, best effort. I don’t think we’ve ever seen Jay Garrick more powerful or more impressive. The story takes a turn at the end that is guaranteed to grab your heartstrings. It’s been a long time since I’ve come this close to crying when reading a comic, but this story truly got to me. I’ll leave the ending up to you to read, but for now let’s go to… NOTES: CAN WE GET AN ONGOING HERE? Did I ask if we could get an ongoing? Yes I did! One more time – CAN WE GET AN ONGOING SERIES? The script by Jeremy Adams has been outstanding from the first page of issue #1 through the finale. Can’t say enough about him! The artwork has been stellar – this is the definitive Jay and Judy Garrick. Every other artist team, please take note. SUMMARY: This is my first 11/10 – yep, we’re dialing up the rating to 11! Of course, that’s just my opinion – what do YOU think? Leave your comments below! -- Ed Garrett. The post “Life’s Term” Review of JAY GARRICK: THE FLASH #6 appeared first on Speed Force. Finish Line Review of SPEED FORCE #6
This series has taken me back to the fun of reading the early Teen Titans stories. That makes sense, especially with the Mad Mod showing up. But it’s more than that. This series has returned us to the joy of being able to go SO fast! At the same time, we’ve seen a threat that looks just beyond the abilities of our heroes to defeat. Can they find a way to overcome the danger of Symphonee? What will the finale of this excellent mini-series give us? Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump! SPOILERS AHEAD! Firsts, an apology for the late review – I had some technical issues that were my own fault that delayed this post, but I hope this will still be helpful. The battle is being fought on multiple fronts. Wallace West is in the Keystone Desert, fighting a “hologram light-construct thingy” (love that description. Avery Ho is at Symphonee HQ in the Atlantic Ocean, tearing up the place (literally). She eventually fights another “hologram light-construct thingy” while our villains decide to dip out, realizing that the gig is over for now. That doesn’t completely stop the danger, however. Our super-speedsters bring the light-constructs together, hoping they will eliminate each other. It almost works, but thanks to the timely return of Connor Kent, that danger is eliminated. We see the rest of the dangers gradually put to rest, and the S.T.A.R. scientists are returned to safety (and hopefully out of their trances). In the end, we see a reunion of most of our heroes back at S.T.A.R. Labs, ready to resume the fun they were starting to enjoy when all this danger began. And, we have the set up for a true “Speed Force” – our younger heroes Wallace, Avery,  Más y Menos, along with Connor Kent and William Wu. NOTES: Just one note here – can we have an ongoing of this series? This is the kind of fun, light-hearted adventure that doesn’t get published often enough. SPEED FORCE got better with every issue, and the series left us at a place that could easily launch a new series. SUMMARY: I’ll give this one a 9/10 – of course, that’s just my opinion. What to YOU think? Leave your comments below! -- Ed Garrett. The post “Finish Line” Review of SPEED FORCE #6 appeared first on Speed Force. Left for Dead Review of THE FLASH #7
This is the beginning of the second story arc under Si Spurrier – and we begin with a lot of trouble for everyone! A lot of storytellers will say “no one is safe”…but in this case it is absolutely true. NO ONE is safe! We will finally find out a bit more about the mysterious Inspector Pilgrim…but you may not like what you learn. Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump! SPOILERS AHEAD! We leave behind last issue’s reveal of the “Crown of Thawnes”…to a world (and time) that still spirals into chaos. Max and Bart appear to face certain doom. But, they are rescued (at least that’s what it seems) by The Linear Men! Long-time fans will remember the Linear Men’s first appearance in SUPERMAN back in the early 1990s. They have appeared in various iterations since, but this version of the Linear Men is very different from that original group. It turns out that the mysterious Inspector Pilgrim is one of the Linear Men, and he explains what is happening to time to Max and Bart. We’ll come back to them in a moment. But first… Everyone is acting strangely. Linda appears to be in a trance. Barry is out of control. Any semblance of reality seems to be falling apart at the seams. But for now, we go back to Max and Bart…To find that the Linear Men have an unbelievable number of speedsters and time travelers in stasis, including Gold Beetle. Inspector Pilgrim claims that beings called Arc Angles revealed to him, “reality’s crumbling because speedsters keep using their powers.” That’s motivating what the Linear Men are doing with all those speedsters and chrononauts. Bart suddenly realizes that he and Max were not really “rescued” by the Linear Men. They were arrested! Max and Bart are added to the speedsters captured by the Linear Men – who will save them? We end this issue with Max and Bart captured, Linda in a trance-like state, Barry still unable to make sense of what’s going on…and where has Wally been? We get a glance at his whereabouts at the end of the issue, but he is in no condition to save the day, at least not yet. Like we said before, no one is safe! NOTES: Si Spurrier has given us something close to a CRISIS level of danger. This is an excellent start to the arc, with a threat so unfathomably big that you have to wonder how our heroes can even survive, much less save the day. The artwork continues to be excellent – trippy, for sure, but that perfectly fits the vibe of this storyline. One side note – Inspector Pilgrim notes some connection to Gold Beetle – can’t wait to see how that pans out. SUMMARY This is a solid start to the latest story arc. If you wanted to see the good guys win, you’ll have to wait. But, if you want to see a great story, it may all be starting right here. I’ll give this issue an 8/10. Of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think? Leave your comments below! -- Ed Garrett. The post “Left for Dead” Review of THE FLASH #7 appeared first on Speed Force. Twisted Code Review of SPEED FORCE #5
How does a mini-series get better with every issue? SPEED FORCE is a great example. This penultimate issue does everything a penultimate issue should do. It ramps up the intensity well past 11, it gives us some little victories without spoiling the finale. And, it gives us some mysterious clues about a character that (hopefully) gives us even more reason to grab the final issue when it hits the LCS shelves. Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump! SOME SPOILERS AHEAD! We left off last issue with Wallace, Avery, and Roundhouse up against Más y Menos and Conner Kent! They manage to free Superboy…but he’s in no condition to do anything more, at least for now.  Our speedsters think having a connection to the Speed Force gives every possible advantage – but Roundhouse is able to shine in this issue in more ways than one. Teaming up with Michael Holt and Cadence, our heroes managed to find the source of all this trouble…along with all the missing scientists. The efforts of our heroes appears to limit what the bad guys may be able to accomplish…but it doesn’t completely remove the danger. And, one of our team of baddies falls victim to…nah, not gonna say here, but it’s a neat twist.  As Wallace goes back to stop the huge (and dangerous) party, we end this issue…can’t wait for the finale! NOTES: There is something more to Cadence than we may think…definite clues dropping in this issue. More cameos…and these are not just stunt appearances. These characters are used effectively – and they help to drive the plot forward. This is how cameo appearances in a series should be handled. The plot lines are all coming together – and this issue’s script by Jarrett Williams is the strongest of the series so far. That’s saying something, as this has been an excellent mini-series. Just one question – CAN WE MAKE THIS AN ONGOING? The quality of this series is more than worth it. The artwork continues to be outstanding – the action leaps off the page. Thanks to Daniele Di Nicuolo & George Kambadais (pencils/inks), Andrew Dalhouse and Pete Pantazis (colors), and Simon Bowland (pencils) SUMMARY: The strongest issue of the series so far – I only wish they could make this an ongoing. I’ll give this one a 10/10 – of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think? Leave your comments below! -- Ed Garrett. The Doctor is In Review of JAY GARRICK: THE FLASH #5
I’m likely repeating myself, but I have loved EVERY panel and page of this series! Jay and Judy Garrick make a tremendous team, and Doctor Elemental makes a formidable villain. Add an excellent plot and some fantastic artwork, and you have a series that I only wish was ongoing. This issue includes a team-up with a great fellow member of the JSA – what more do you want? Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump! MILD SPOILERS AHEAD! I’m purposely keeping the spoilers light here – you really need to read the issue. We pick up from where we left off last issue, with a receptionist who turned out to be another of Doctor Elemental’s experiments gone rogue. Jay and Judy get away, saving multiple staff along the way from an explosion on the top floor – and then go to someone who may be able to help…Pieter Cross, aka the second Doctor Midnight! That doesn’t get them out of danger, of course. Doctor Elemental’s minions arrive to start a battle. Jay and Pieter join the fray, leaving Judy safely away…or so they thought…was the battle just a distraction? What is the deal with Judy being the key to the “transformation of the world”? We’ll have to learn more next issue! NOTES: There is absolutely nothing wrong with this series. That’s a rare thing to say, but here it’s true. The script by Jeremy Adams is just one more example of why he is an amazing writer. And, the artwork by Diego Olortegui (pencils/inks), Luis Guerrero (colors) and Steve Wands (letters) continues to be perfection this issue. Again, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this series – and everything has been right! SUMMARY: OK, I’ll quit gushing here…but I’m still gonna give this a 10. Of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think? Leave your comments below! -- Ed Garrett. The post “The Doctor is In” Review of JAY GARRICK: THE FLASH #5 appeared first on Speed Force. The Gift Review of THE FLASH #6
This wild, weird ride through different layers of reality continues…with a twist that I certainly did NOT see coming (how about you?). If you think Wally West has gone through the wringer so far, hold onto your hats (or cowls) because we’re dialing things up to 11 in this issue. Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump! SPOILERS AHEAD! There is SO much to tell…but there is also a lot I don’t want to spoil. The big bad is revealed – but you will have plenty of opportunities to hit the back button before we get to that one, so let’s go with a brief (less spoilery) review: Everyone – and I mean EVERYONE is off their game in this issue. Even when they know what to do, it seems beyond their reach to do that. This includes Wally and Linda – and Barry as well! Barry is particularly off – acting most un-Barry-like. He’s throwing shade at Wally in a way that is deeply concerning and hurtful. The Stillness are continuing to make appearances, but their conversations are not helpful in the least. They remain enigmatic – who/what are they, what is their purpose, why are they here? In the end, Barry and Wally race into the speed force. Wally pours out his heart, only to see Barry acting nastier (and more out of character) than ever. It culminates in an act that no one would ever THINK Barry could do… And after that we find who has really been behind this all along… SPOILER AHEAD …… YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED ….. You really wanna know? ….. OK, here it is…. …. Last chance… ….. THAWNE IS BACK!    Yes, Eobard Thawne has once again escaped certain doom and appears more powerful than ever. And, his plan is to use a confused and hurt Wally West as his ultimate weapon!  More on that next issue…but for now… NOTES: OK, dear reader,  you may have figured out Thawne ahead of time…I certainly did not. Still, this version of Thawne may be the most dangerous yet. Well done, Si Spurrier, getting us here in this arc. The artwork continues to be outstanding! It’s trippy, which fits the atmosphere of the story – but that description does not do the artwork justice. It’s exceptionally well done. Thanks to Mike Deodato, Jr., Trish Mulvihill, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. SUMMARY: The reveal at the end alone is worth a high ranking – overall I’ll give this issue a 9 out of 10. Of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think? Leave your comments below.! -- Ed Garrett. The post “The Gift” – Review of THE FLASH #6 appeared first on Speed Force. Tilted Mistakes Review of SPEED FORCE #4
This mini-series is picking up steam as we get to the penultimate issue (could we make this an ongoing please?). It’s Wallace West and Avery Ho against…Conner Kent? Yes, the battle has gotten even more dangerous as the Symphonee app threatens to take over the world. Meanwhile, we will finally get the story behind it all – how this evil plot came together in the first place. Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump! SPOILERS AHEAD! This series takes a couple of speedsters who deserve full credit…but who feel like second fiddles. It affects Wallace and Avery differently, but this issue brings all those feelings to the forefront. Avery has been saving the day (and her friends) a lot, but doesn’t get full credit as a Flash. Wallace, for his part, has been too busy trying to prove himself to ever ask for help. He shouts at Avery, “I hate feeling like I need people!”  They get the chance to talk it out – though Avery may have additional feelings she needs to talk about later. And, they team up well with Roundhouse – but the battle is far from over and we won’t see THAT result until next issue. The other main thread for this issue is the backstory for Symphonee. It all started with an online school headed up by Sebastian Stagg. The school may or may not have been great (or even legitimate) but it brought the Mad Mod and the Fiddler together. By the time Music Meister joins the group, we have the genesis for all the mayhem we find today. There is a lot more to this issue – you really need to read this one for yourself. If you are just jumping in you may need to grab the back issues, but this is a short series and you won’t have to spend a lot of time or money to catch up. That takes us to… NOTES: The artwork is outstanding! Best of the series so far. That’s not surprising – Daniele Di Nicuolo (pencils/inks) and Andrew Dalhouse (colors) have been outstanding in anything I’ve seen from them so far. Kudos as well to letters by Simon Bowland. The script for this issue is the best so far – all the threads are coming together, and Jarrett Williams is spinning an excellent story with characters that have deserved the limelight for quite some time. SUMMARY: This is the best of the series so far – I could only wish that this would be an ongoing. I’ll give this issue a 9/10. Of course, that’s just my opinion – what do YOU think? Leave your comments below! -- Ed Garrett. The post “Tilted Mistakes” Review of SPEED FORCE #4 appeared first on Speed Force. The Waiting Game Review of JAY GARRICK: THE FLASH #4
THIS is how “The Dawn of DC” should be handled across the DC lineup! I’ve enjoyed every issue so far…but this issue may be the best one so far. How did Judy get her speed? For that matter, how did Jay get his speed – you may learn some new details. And just what has this bad guy got up his sleeve? Just a quick recommendation – GO BUY THIS SERIES! Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump! SPOILERS AHEAD! This issue is an origin story…or should I say, origin stories? Doctor Elemental has a connection to the Flash that goes a lot farther back than we thought before. Here are the basics: Professor Hughes was a tenured faculty member turned mad scientist, inspired by the appearance of Alan Scott/Green Lantern to create his own super-powered humans. Hughes eventually targeted Jay Garrick, making him his protégé in the lab. When the time was right, Hughes created the accident that gave Jay Garrick his powers! Yes, that “accident” with fumes from hard water we’ve read about for years has a new twist. Hughes rigged the lab to CREATE the “accident”. The hard water, acting as a catalyst, mixed with other chemicals to create those fumes that were in the original origin story.  In this updated story, the mixture of all those fumes somehow triggered Jay’s metagene, giving him super-speed. Unable to replicate his success, Hughes goes more and more off the deep end, eventually becoming Doctor Elemental to continue his work. Hughes later recreated the accident that gave Jay his powers, triggering Judy’s metagene and granting her super-speed as well! And to top off all the origin stories…Hughes was the silent partner who CREATED S.T.A.R. Labs! This gave Hughes the ability to continue his horrific research, at the cost of countless human lives. Jay and Judy learn all of this…just in time for one of Doctor Elemental’s other “creations” to attack! We’ll have to wait for next issue to see what happens next! NOTES: The script for this series is so tightly woven – it’s one of the very best FLASH story arcs I’ve read (keep in mind I’m called “Silver Aged Ed for a reason). I loved the way that Jay’s origin story was handled. This was a retcon that expanded on the original in a new and inventive way, without ruining the original for long-time fans. One of the interesting names in Hughes’ research was “Clariss”. For newer readers, Edward Clariss eventually becomes The Rival, the “Reverse Flash” for Jay Garrick. The artwork! Oh the artwork! This was a terrific issue with some of the best artwork of the series. That’s from Diego Olortegui with pencils/inks, Luis Guerrero on colors, and Steve Wands with the letters. I was blown away with this issue! SUMMARY: The best issue yet in one of the best story arcs for any Flash! I’ll give this one a 10/10. Of course, that still is just my opinion – what’s yours? Leave your comments below! -- Ed Garrett. The post “The Waiting Game” Review of JAY GARRICK: THE FLASH #4 appeared first on Speed Force. Berserker Mode DLC Pack Review of SPEED FORCE #3
The music is hypnotic…in more ways than one. And when you add an old Flash foe into the mix, it gets even more dangerous. Wallace and Avery may not fully understand what they are getting into just yet, and that makes it even more dangerous for everyone. You’ll get more cameos than you can count…and some surprising twists along with way as well. It seems nothing can stop Symponee (and the baddies behind it) from taking over the world! Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump! SPOILERS AHEAD! Avery is getting things done and saving the day from the infected T-Spheres that have attacked Mister Terrific. She has more than proven her worth, in spite of those who may relegate her to a secondary speedster role. But, while she deals with the immediate danger, Wallace is off to visit Jamie Reyes, aka Blue Beetle. After a great conversation (and a haircut), Wallace goes off to find Connor Kent. The two of them take the fight to Más y Menos, but our baddies get the upper hand and take over Superboy’s mind! He is now on the side of Music Meister and Symphonee! All of this is going on while the plans continue for a music festival that can change the world…or at least take over the minds of tens of thousands of people at one time. Will Wallace and Avery stop this threat? How many more heroes will fall away to the side of the bad guys before they can make a difference? We’ll find out more next issue. For now, though… NOTES: I love Avery’s inner monologue that starts this issue. It’s almost a case of breaking the fourth wall, addressing the relative lack of respect this excellent character has received. If you still feel that way after this series, I don’t know what to tell you. She is really shining in this mini-series. Wallace’s hyperactive level seems to be settling in somewhere between Wally and Bart, and it does give him a voice that works here. He may have been created in the New52 as the “we won’t give you Wally” Wallace, but his character is getting his due here, and I’m glad to see it happen. How many cameos can you fit into one issue? Apparently a lot – and successfully so. Some only appear briefly, while others (like Roundhouse, Connor and Jamie, not to mention Más y Menos) get more page counts. Still, the cameos are handled well, adding to the story instead of distracting from the plot. SUMMARY: I’ll confess to being a bit too old to match the target demographic of this series – it appears to be aimed for a younger audience, and I go by “SilverAged” for a reason. Still, I’m enjoying this mini-series more with each issue, and I’m more than thrilled to see some additional members of the Flash Family get their time in the spotlight. I’ll give this issue an 8/10 – of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think? Leave your comments below! -- Ed Garrett.
