"You look tired."

Eiji's voice is soft, not judgmental, but Ash still has to hide a reflexive flinch. He's so used to running on fumes and being perfect all the same that having someone see right through him is still kind of jarring. He's not used to being seen as less-than-perfect without being punished for it.

After a moment, he heaves a deep sigh and lets his shoulders slump, one hand raking through his hair. It doesn't stay back from his face; it never does. "I am tired," he admits quietly, and stares at the blue light of the TV flickering over his bare feet.

"You need a break. Some good rest. And some good strong tea." Eiji nods to himself; Ash catches a glimpse from the corner of his eye and feels himself smiling in return, just slightly. "That is what my mother always says helps most, and in this at least, she is right."

"In this?" Ash lifts his head to pin Eiji with a querying look. "What's she wrong about?"

Eiji just smiles at him. "Let's make a deal. You get a good night's sleep and I will tell you."

He plops a cushion into his lap, then reaches over, his hand brushing Ash's shoulder. Ash doesn't pull away, curious and perhaps too tired to hold himself apart, and so Eiji gently-but-firmly tugs him down, to lie on the sofa with his head in his lap, on the cushion Eiji just put there. Belatedly, he thinks he really ought to have guessed what Eiji was about to do.

"Conniving little bastard, aren't you," he murmurs, but there is no bite in his voice - how can there be, when Eiji's fingers have started to card through his hair, slow and soothing in a way no one's touch has ever been before?

It's wonderful. It might be addictive. It should be frightening, but Ash is too tired to care.

"Who, me?" Eiji smiles tenderly down at him, eyes twinkling with mirth, and... more. "I have no idea what you could possibly mean, Ash. I hardly even speak English! How could I ever be... 'conniving'?"

Ash tiredly swats him on the knee, and he laughs. But he doesn't stop petting Ash's hair, and as Ash closes his eyes, he allows himself to succumb to a moment of weakness, because as loath as he is to admit it, the feeling he is drowning in right now is definitely contentment.
