Asian Hate Crime in Toronto from Justine Yu on Vimeo.
Documenting my experience of Anti-Asian harassment. I was sitting and reading in a park when a white woman came up to me to say I was on private property and threatened to call the police if I didn't leave. ”Aren’t you doing the same?” I asked. “I’m a teacher” she said. “There are signs that say No Trespassing. Maybe you don’t speak English? Go back to China.”
“Wow, thank you for that racist remark,” I said. “Fuck off, you bitch!” she said. She said a bunch of other things that are a blur to me now and I said, “CALL THE POLICE ON ME THEN!” She walked off.
I sat there not knowing what to do with myself. Should I leave? What if she does call the police? But I’m not doing anything wrong! And I don’t want her to know that she scared me!
AND THEN SHE CAME BACK PROWLING! Listen closely and you can hear her saying “All Chinese people should go to jail!”
At that point, I just popped off. I couldn’t believe how hateful that comment was! If she is a teacher then can you imagine that a woman like this is teaching children? People like this should NOT be teaching. PEOPLE LIKE THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE POWER.
I have so many things to say but this is most important: I am privileged to be an Asian woman. If this happened to a Black person and this woman called the police and they came, this could have ended in straight up murder. ⠀ ⠀ This is literally the story of so many Black men + women who have been murdered. And for doing far less than I was. Breonna Taylor was asleep in her own home. Ahmaud Arbery was jogging. Stephon Clark was standing in his grandma’s backyard. I could go on...⠀ ⠀ These people weren’t doing anything wrong and they certainly didn’t have the luxury to speak back to the racism the way I did to this woman. Doing so would be a sure death sentence. ⠀ ⠀ The shock and fury I feel in my body right now is so palpable. I have never experienced anything like this in my life and I can’t imagine what it’s like to live with this every single day. I cannot imagine the kind of violence this does to one’s body. No physical weapons were drawn but believe me, this was violence.

In a country where men are more in love with their gadgets than with their female counterparts, a group of lonely and disillusioned ladies get on the legendary Limbo Limbo tour bus. Off to a far, exotic land, they hope to find the long sought-for Happiness. Meeting the inhabitants of Moustache Island, the women's primal instincts are enflamed: while hunting down this rare species of Real Men, they turn against each other and against the titanic forces that rule the Island.

Carnivora Gardinum from Biolapse on Vimeo.
The completed Biolapse film of carnivorous plants. Over a year of effort, with 107 days of straight shooting with 2 cameras. I started out building timelapse equipment so I could go do timelapse. Then people started paying me money to build them systems. Eventually it turned into a business, The Chronos Project LLC. Finally I have had time to start working on my own timelapse work. I have decided to pull myself out of the world and into the studio for some areas of timelapse photography that are greatly under explored.

Wasteland from MEL Films on Vimeo.
A weekend tour of the apocalypse. For Mike Orr, a.k.a. “Sweet Lips,” escapism comes in the form of Wasteland Weekend: an annual four-day post-apocalyptic festival held in the Southern California desert that attracts thousands of people from around the country. It’s basically a giant celebration of end-of-the-world culture, where, per Sweet Lips, “people can do whatever they want.” But most of all, people come to Wasteland for the cars — DIY war machines that look as though they’ve rolled right out of Fury Road.

LANDSCAPE OF POWER: Freedom and Slavery in the Great Dismal Swamp from Nina shapiro-perl on Vimeo.
This film, Landscape of Power: Freedom and Slavery in the Great Dismal Swamp summarizes the three-year archeological field study of the Great Dismal Swamp in southern Virginia and North Carolina, conducted by Prof. Daniel Sayers and his team through a NEH "We the People" grant. Drawing on the major research findings that for the first time establish occupation by maroon communities in the swamp for more than 200 years, the film carries to the public a story of agency, resistance and resilience among escaped slaves. Choosing heat, insects, wild animals and the “unknown swamp” over plantation life, slaves defied their masters and chose freedom. As community historian Therbia Parker from Suffolk, Virginia says in the film, “You can put shackles on my wrists and ankles—but as long as I think freedom… as long as my ancestors were thinking freedom—they sought freedom.”
This film was written and directed by American University Filmmaker in Residence and anthropologist Nina Shapiro-Perl with cinematography and editing by filmmaker and anthropology graduate student, Beth Geglia. The film will be as a public tool for engagement about issues of violence, and resistance, resilience, maroons and slavery.
