Merry Christmas!

I'm sorry that it took me this long to finish the second volume. But I can assure, that it's definitely worth the wait. I recommend this one a lot, it contains a lot of interesting details that otherwise aren't shown or said in the games. I wanted to get this novel done specifically for christmas, so I did my best to get it finished! It's also much more text heavy than the previous one, although not by too much. The first novel serves as an introduction, setting up the groundwork as to "what's next to come", so the Tatsuya of then was still the one native to This Side. This second novel, as Tatsuya's already awakened, is a bit more in-line with the game Tatsuya. If you're curious to see more of Tatsuya in that way, I'd recommend reading this novel. Of course, reading both is best. It may not be necessary to read both, but it enhances the experience specially if you care about the characters. Now finally, I hope everyone can get to enjoy these novels for the first time.

Personal Notes: I always wanted to upload these doujinshi, but I usually refrain from posting pure raws because I want the translations too…Unfortunately, I cannot defeat my archenemesis </3 japanese handwriting, and Nagase/Shinshu's handwriting is very……..messy x_x. For some of these, I still want to try my hand at translating eventually, but it'll definitely take a while. I love translating little artist notes and there's a lot of those in every doujinshi so if I can't translate something absolutely fully I end up giving up orz. In any case, yes. These are doujinshi made by Shinshu Ueda under the name of Tankinu Nagase in their doujin circle U.S.O. There are 5 doujinshi attached, 3 for Megami Ibunroku Persona and 2 for Persona 2.

Under the cut are some small explanations for the others, but I'll go straight for the P2EP doujin for introduction, as I actually translated bits of that one.

Title: CARRY THAT WEIGHT! - Eternal Punishment focus (PG, small bits of Kandori mixed in with a Post-EP story) Original printing date: 2000/08/12

This is the only doujinshi of Tankinu that was published under a different circle than their usual "U.S.O.", called "ESTMA". I have never found any other doujinshi of them under this label, and if there were any, they might be lost to time. The first page warns about the book containing spoilers for the ending of EP, so it's advised to proceed with caution. After that, all the way up to page 7 there's small gag bits with Kandori, and an obligatory Naoya illustration (they really seems to like him so much ww). From page 8 to 23 is the actual story of the doujin, "Phantom Pain". FORTUNATELY, it was all written in computer text (not handwritten) and I thought it was such a good story, that I took the time to actually translate it at least. The pictures attached to this post are the translation of those pages. There might be some errors in some of the handwritten parts, but I hope I did well.

TL Notes: アンプ (Amplifier / Ampli), The change in fonts is supposed to represent that Eikichi is talking in english there in the original japanese (but that's hard to showcase to an english translation duh), I keep honorifics like Senpai and Aniki as-is.

I was surprised to know that these doujinshi were never talked about (nor were they ever scanned), but now they exist for all to see.

Now, for the rest of the doujinshi.

Title: Reverse/リバース - Naoya and Kandori (+misc) (PG, a bit of a general all-genre doujinshi mixing doodles for other games and a second half focusing on BAROQUE) Original printing date: 1997/12/28. 2nd reprint 1999/12/24. Has a small gag story called "Dead man's questions" about Kandori in a strange flashy outfit.

Title: Go bad/ゴーバッド - Naoya/Hidehiko (BL, Naoya kisses Hidehiko. Seems to have crossover bits from BAROQUE, another ATLUS game Ueda/Nagase did doujinshi for) Original printing date: 1998/12/29. 2nd reprint 1999/05/03. Despite the cover being Naoya with a skirt, there's no crossdressing involved.

Title: BIG BAD BINGO - Innocent Sin focus (PG, done with collaboration with another artist which is Superunknown Corp's sho太郎/沢田翔) Original printing date: 1999/08/??

This doujin physically has Superunknown's side be printed downwards, so you have to flip the doujinshi to read their part which is pretty nice. Unfortunately this is the only one of U.S.O. doujinshi without an specific day of printing, just vague August 1999.

And that's pretty much what I can say for now, at least until when I get to translating some of these (and the folder will be updated accordingly when so)

Love Tatsuya and Nyarlathotep truly the real plot of Persona 2

Compassion

One thing I find is a bit mangled by the Additional Scenario is the absolute commitment and kindness by which every single attempt by Tatsuya to align the old world with the new is outlined. Even for characters who it could be argued may not necessarily deserve it as shown above, there’s enough kindness no longer spared towards himself to pour out of his heart in waves to whoever he believes could be saved. This teeters on the line of the overgrown kid Tatsuya truly is inside and the maturity he desperately wishes to emulate for the sake of capability, childishly wa

sted love enough to undo him as seen with how he reacts to Kandori’s death in overworld dialogue and enough adult sense to recognize the background behind every situation that may normally be labelled in black and white. In the end, this level of care is what allows him to open his heart to Maya and the others and defeat Nyarlathotep— For as well as he can imitate, all creation is driven by the inherent want to connect with others only humans possess.

Contradiction

Where Tatsuya is selfless in sacrificing bodily autonomy to Nyarlathotep to keep his friends safe, he's selfish (however understandably) in refusing to forget for the sake of the world. However kind-hearted Tatsuya is in how he treats the villains, he cuts down rows of Tenchu soldiers and similar to get close to them in the first place. Caught between child and adult in the hell of no responsibility yet too much pressure, what decisions he makes can never be 100% clear, understandably so. Yet as part of Eternal Punishment's self-affirming message, this reality is never denied. The shadow, base desires and ideals and drive, is just as important to a human soul as the persona. This is another element which ultimately defeats Nyarlathotep, the acceptance of what you are in totality, not just the ideal image you have of yourself.

Theming

The arcana which rules over Tatsuya is The Sun, themed around joy, optimism, vitality, fulfillment, and moving on with your life. This aligns perfectly with his arc of no longer allowing the past to constrict him, as well as finding a purpose by heading into policing to grow closer to Katsuya. The lighter, put to use with big bro's cigarettes, gains a home.

His base Persona is Vulcanus, the Roman god of fire, deserts and metalworking, based on Tatsuya being a fire sign and the lighter Jun gifted him. His feminine counterpart is the pleiad Maia, Maya’s base Persona.

His ultimate Persona is Apollo, the Greek god of the Sun, prophecy and music, as well as the protector of children heading into adulthood in parallel to his sister and counterpart Artemis as the protector of young children and mothers. On the day Hermes was born, he snuck out of his crib while his mother Maia wasn’t looking and stole fifty of Apollo’s prized cattle to sacrifice to Zeus. Enraged, Apollo demanded their father punish him, and in response Hermes created and played the lyre. So entranced he was by the music, Apollo accepted the lyre as a divine symbol and in return gifted his half-brother the caduceus, making him the god of healing. This translates into the game as the gift exchange between Tatsuya and Jun.

As is true for all Innocent Sin party members (excluding Yukino), the Sun also rules over Leo, his sign and one of the constellations in the fixed grand cross. It is considered in polarity to Aquarius, which means when the Sun is in power, Saturn (represented by Kronus) is at its weakest. 

Nyarlathotep

One of if not the most significant relationship Tatsuya forms throughout the entirety of the game’s canon is with the primary antagonist Nyarlathotep, and for eighteen years in two different universes he doesn’t even know it.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Nyarlathotep is positively obsessed with Tatsuya. Alongside calling him “mine” and “toy in the shape of a human”, he claims his body with marks of ownership compared to that left on cattle, and in Japanese tells him to his face in Monad Mandala that he likes him. Everything we’ve seen him do, from (retroactively, as that was not the director of Persona 1’s vision) Kandori to Jun has been for the sake of bringing Tatsuya right to where we see him during the events of Eternal Punishment, struggling desperately in a spiderweb he’s occupied since birth. Sudou meeting Kashihara and causing the shrine incident subsequently pushing him away from all significant social interaction outside of his brother for ten years? Orchestrated by Nyarlathotep. The arrest of his father which disillusioned him from that same brother and left him betrayed and listless? Likely orchestrated by Nyarlathotep posing as Gozen. Kashihara's suicide and the appearance of Master Joker awakening Tatsuya's Persona in pursuit? Exactly what He wanted. The death of a woman he dearly respected, looked up to and loved? All Nyarlathotep’s doing. Every single significant event we know of in Tatsuya’s life was designed to groom him into the perfect shell of a vulnerable toy until he could be claimed his rightful owner. How many of his personality traits were sculpted in the image of his desirability? Everyone he met factored into the plan like pawns the intention of Nyarlathotep's games absolute and potent enough to carry through a universal reset.

None of that matters, though, ultimately. It matters what he’s going to do about it. What are we all going to do about it?

Hello! I see that you have a lot of pending projects regarding translating P2 novels and scanlations. I was wondering is there anything I can do to help, perhaps? I don’t know Japanese very well so I can’t help much on that part but I have experience in cleaning, redrawing and editing texts.

If no, then I just want to leave a message and thank you for your work! I really enjoy your translations, they must’ve taken a lot of work. Mad respect for doing all of that. I appreciate them very much.

Umm in regards to help, I definitely need a lot and get a little overwhelmed trying to do a lot so I try to do one thing at a time... But there's so much I try not to disappoint >< generally I think I answered in another post, I don't do raws alone unless I post them together with a translation (but if I'm being honest, there are some stories in p2 anthologies I personally am a bit ehh on translating so I wish I could kinda just, scan every single antho with raws, and if people are interested to pick a story they could www)

In regards to official books at least, a lot of time is lost cleaning up the page so it looks almost near digital archival (to my personal regard because I want everything to look as clean as possible) but I'm a bit of an idiot and scan at like 600dpi everything so each archive is like 100mb+ and for a book like, p1 official guide which is 300 pages that's a lot...

Doujinshi help is also a lot more...specific because the p2 doujinshi I own aren't to anyone's liking but mine, so even though I'm trying my best with them. I know nobody would want them so I keep them separate from all things even though they're what I care the most for

And the most important part, I'm pretty shy aha... I wouldn't know how to keep up with somebody if we wanted to have something out for release so I work mostly alone, which as a result I'm slow...

I always appreciate help whenever I'm offered to, which I'm glad for! But I also wouldn't want to pressure people so it's complicated orz

My interest hasn't waned at all, I'm just pretty slow ww but from the time of my last post I've gotten a lot more media to translate so there's always gonna be something to look up to unless someone wants to try their hand at it, I can provide it.

A lot of the P2 anthologies (I have 17 (missing 8)) and might try getting some P1 anthologies too (own 10 out f 29...)

P1 PSP Snow Queen novel (This novel is in Nanjo's perspective, it doesn't have very good reviews but I'm curious about it) Also possibly part of the EP guidebook (it has an interesting interview with kaneko-tadashi-cozy about the themes and development of EP). A lot of these things I'd post raws of because I can't do everything on my own but I like to be organized and only post things WITH translation available but idk orz on top of doujinshi being my passion primarily and that one takes a while too because I own at least 110 P2 doujinshi....

If you’re okay with sharing more, can you please talk more about this part you crossed out? (“I didn't even mention how Katsuya factors into Tatsuya's life and Nyarlathotep's control of him because it's also important”)

I'm glad at least that my enthusiasm would get across in some form! I can't speak about that detail too much, but what I can tell you however, is this.

What does Tatsuya have left now? He no longer could keep his friends, he could no longer keep the woman he tried to save, even the new companions he met through this journey aren't for him to maintain. But there's something he always will have, no matter how many times the world gets to reset. In any world, and in any time, he'll always have Katsuya. The one thing Nyarlathotep can't take from him are his ties bound by blood. And even Tatsuya himself can't detach himself from Katsuya. Even if he rejects him, even if he wants to separate himself from him, that connection will always be there regardless of what he does. It's something that Nyarlathotep can't rewrite from existence.

But then, Tatsuya is so sure of this fact. That's why he acts the way he does. Because Katsuya is such a certain presence in his life. He will always be there, waiting for him. Even if he blocks his calls, even if he rejects his sweets made specifically for him, even if he doesn't come home, even if he's in danger of losing himself every day, Katsuya will always be there.

And what if he's not? If Nyarlathotep took this from him, what would he have left? What would be left of what composes his existence as "Tatsuya Suou"? Not any ties by blood, even his appearance isn't his to own. Friendship and connections are no longer part of who he is.

Then who would he be? Just, "the singularity"?

Katsuya is his last standing pillar, and the only thing that may stop him from completely falling into the abyss that Nyarlathotep tries to drag him into. There's something that he can still yet keep. He can still Live.

And in the circumstance that he does end up returning to the Other Side, Katsuya will be there, too.

At the very least, that's what I think.

Hello, thank you for sharing these scans! The Nyarlathotep/Tatsuya pairing is pretty rare, I'm curious about what you like about it.

Oh my god anon you don't know what you've just unleashed, I've been waiting to talk about it all my life---I don't know how to start. I'm so delusional but bear with me because I really really love nyarutatsu hold on. Nyarutatsu I can divide it in several concepts that are appealing to me.

>Eternity as a whole (Ouroboros, Samsara) >Another representation of Nyarlathotep (deity) obsessed with a human ala Randolph Carter >The questioning of what makes humans human at all to begin with >The after effects and repercussions of trauma >selfcest (fake) cough The concept of "Eternity" is pretty headcanonized but bear with me.

Something that really struck me while playing EP was the Three Poisons that Nyarlathotep mentions, which fit each of the P2EP party members.

This was actually mistranslated in the english version (and not corrected with the patch, either but translated somewhat correctly in other instances?) the three poisons are "Anger" (Dvesha), "Ignorance"(Moha, but also Delusion) and "Desire" (Raga, which can also be Greed or Lust but most importantly, Attachment). Katsuya is anger (mostly repressed anger, towards his surroundings and circumstances), Baofu is ignorance/delusion (in which moha also can mean "emptiness") and Ulala is desire (*wants* so much, and more than anything attaches herself to the need of being *wanted*) Due to these, humans become trapped in the cyclical eternity of Samsara. While these 3 primarily match the EP cast, there's somebody we're forgetting right? I feel like these 3 poisons as a whole match Tatsuya as well. A key factor of Moha (ignorance) is attachment, primarily to people. Specially the 'illusion' that is "the world", "Maya". In other words, this is in regards to Tatsuya's attachment to Maya that is both an attachment to the person itself but the illusion that is "Maya" "Maya" as he knows her, doesn't exist anymore. He's attached to the image of her, the illusion of her. This attachment is both of ignorance and also craving, exemplified by "Raga".

While "Moha" is a fundamental ignorance of the self and most predominantly means naivety/stupidity. Foolishness. It's due to ignorance that you crave and desire, desire something that is not even real. This attachment is poison.

"Dvesha" is self explanatory as anger and aversion which can be attributed to placing his anger towards Nyarlathotep but ultimately his anger is not so much towards Nyarlathotep in itself (it still is, don't get me wrong) but towards himself most of all. Because it is he who caused everything by his own attachment and desires, attachment to the earthly world and the people in it.

Symbolically speaking, if not literally, Nyarlathotep taking his form is well enough to signify that Tatsuya, truly, hates himself most of all. That's his weakness.

By fulfilling all 3 characteristics, Tatsuya's stuck in his own Samsara. This is why I, at least as a headcanon of mine, belive that Tatsuya didnt get to return to the Other Side, he's experiencing karmic retribution over and over again.

It could also be that, he's doomed repeat the same events time and time again. Without a chance to change anything, without a chance to escape. Not being aware of being inside the hell of his own making. What makes you believe /this/ is the only world that has been created? There may have been countless worlds created, and those of which he can never return in the flesh. And this cycle of one's perpetual mistakes being represented by a creature that in on itself represents humanity as a whole is so appealing to me because, Tatsuya is truly so human. Being so ignorant, foolish, craving attachment and connections is so disgustingly human. Tatsuya may be stuck with Nyarlathotep for eternity in the Collective unconscious, and it's not like he didn't even agree. Nyarlathotep already marked him, through the brand. Philemon mentions is as a way to showcase what belongs to him, enchanted by the shadows, and Tatsuya is his.

Even Tatsuya says as much in the PSP scenario that "I'm the only one he can do as he pleases with" (what exactly that "he can do as he pleases" entails, who knows! The possibilies!).

Speaking of the scenario, this is where I bring up Ouroboros. Destruction and Creation.... Tatsuya needs Nyarlathotep as much as Nyarlathotep needs him. His main driving force in EP is both keeping everyone's safety as well as hoping to destroy Nyarlathotep, driven by his anger towards him (this 'anger' which Nyarlathotep enhances as a whole).

And as mentioned earlier with the Three Poisons, Nyarlathotep mentions that these are "his primary source of power". If a mere human alone is so rotten in poison, that makes him the perfect thing to own. They both feed each other pretty much. Tatsuya funnels his eternal rage driven sorrow into Nyarlathotep and he absorbs it and to him that's sustenance to his being plus ""love"". They hate each other in an all-consuming ouroboros, where neither of them will ever get out, trapped in their own cyclical eternity. Nyarlathotep doesn't need tatsuya to love him he just needs tatsuya to need him as much as he needs Tatsuya. Repetition!

And yes, I mention "love". Nyarlathotep "loves" Tatsuya, but in a way that is not the way you could exactly think of traditional "love". what is love No seriously, in the way we understand it, what encompasses love? Compassion, affection, kindness? Love is as much of a positive emotion as it can be a negative, contradictory emotion. Love enough to be obsessed, possesive, destructive. Love enough to destroy, to want, to own.

Nyarlathotep mentions that he's grown fond of Tatsuya when you first encounter him (again, mistranslated in english and not corrected in the patch)

(wow they're flirting) The original line is: そう熱くなるなよ。私はお前が気に入ったんだ。どうだ、似合ってるんだろうか？ (Don't get so worked up. I've taken a liking to you. Well, don't you think it suits me?) <- The latter part referring to imitating his appearance, but not the full sentence. As 気に入ったんだ means to grown fond of something, like a "like" but not 好き 'like'. (delusional).

Constantly wanting Tatsuya to submit to him as well.

Sure, you could interpret these as typical villiany talk, but I ship it because I think it's interesting. Another factor to me is that, Nyarlathotep sometimes is less of a "being" and more of a "concept" at times. The brand in Tatsuya's arm left in him by Nyarlathotep is as much of a showcase of ownership as it is a sign to showcase that, everything that had happened, happened. All his pain and suffering, his fears, his anxiety and dread---they're all part of him. He just has to eventually move on.

I really like this line that Tatsuya says in town dialogue. Nyarlathotep is a natural part of humanity, the negative traits found in all humans. Hence why, as long as humanity still lives, he will persist. This is mentioned even in the novel I translated too, that Nyarlathotep was "summoned" by Tatsuya due to the fear in his heart.

Tatsuya is so *human*, with all these fears and desires and wants and struggles. Nyarlathotep, who is drawn to humanity, likes these aspects and wants to exploit them for all he's worth. And of course, I do like that he uses his appearance to show this obsession, yet it's also a form of mockery, as mentioned earlier. Nyarlathotep tries to imitate a human's skin, but he himself is not so human. Or is he? He may be more human than what we believe.

And I like to 'humanize' him. Because Nyarlathotep is /human/ in a sense, negative traits found in humanity makes us as human as positive traits do.

I probably have a loooooot more than what I'm allowed to say I didn't even mention how Katsuya factors into Tatsuya's life and Nyarlathotep's control of him because it's also important but in essence, this is what draws me to them. Also, it's pretty much the most popular ship in jp spaces as of late, so there's that!

I guess in a sense, it's not "ship" in the way people normally would think of. Oh they go on dates, they're adorable, they're cute! kiss kiss love love! No, it's suffering on Tatsuya's side. Living with horror, loved by something beyond his comprehension. Something happened to him that he didn't ask for, he didn't want. And it has stained him. And he's there, always been there. Maybe before he was even remotely born (this is also another line Tatsuya has).

It's terrifying, bizzarre, dreadful and simultaneously so beautiful. There is an appeal in Tatsuya's suffering----and I like that.

Also this fucking line. This fucking line. Did they really expect me to go through the game and be normal about it. Why would he say this. What. I mean, do you get it? It's so petty. It's probably the most petty thing to do. He's aware of Tatsuya's attachment to Maya and went as far as even create an in-universe fanfiction in which they don't end up together (Tatsunoshin and Maihime). (Or just make a post about it on r/megaten but it would be better to contact the reddit user directly I think, the list is still updating because I saw P5X got added to the untranslated megaten media list and it only was announced recently)

It helps link both the story of Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment together. Other characters are touched upon briefly, such as Anna Yoshizaka, Tatsuya Sudou and even Eikichi Mishina. So any error that may be found inside, please let me know! These novels are INCREDIBLY rare and stupid expensive (you might find them for over 30k yen sometimes, 12k for ONE if you're lucky). I lucked out last year and managed to obtain both for a rather cheap price (that if I mention it It'd give a heart attack to someone). At first, I wanted to wait until I could release both at the same time but it would take a lot of time, so I decided to release the first volume first (when I finish the second, I'll edit this post so both can be found together). I recently got a scanner (finally) so I can start scanning and translating all pieces of media that I own. I want to take a bit of a small break from translating big things like these and do some doujinshi scans for a little while www despite the scary count of the advertised pages (200+) the novel isn't actually that long. English isn't my first language, If you want to help in any way that'd be appreciated. If you find any typos etc please let me know. For now, I hope everyone can get to enjoy these unearthed 20+ year old novels for the first time ever.

Personal Note: Not a doujinshi, but I've wanted to translate this artist's comics for quite a while… Anything Nyarutatsu I eat up (but I also want to translate their extensive other story in pixiv). The artist has been pretty inactive since 2022 sadly… 寄り添う手 - is more like "snuggling, nestling, cuddling" but I went with entwining a bit because it seemed a bit better? クトゥﾉﾚフの弔詞 - that's the name of the game the artist references

Artist note: "I played the neglected PSP version of 10 years ago and finished the Additional Scneario. And because of that, I was surprised at Ta-chan's remark of "I want to die", and became obsessed over the side effects of Nyaru-sama's brand. I combined it with my own headcanon that I thought for longer than a decade, PSP aside, and it finally took shape. That's refreshing I secretly made a tribute to the free game "Cthulhu's Condolence". Nyarutatsu increase!"

Personal Note: This is my first time translating/typesetting doujinshi! I was very interested in this particular one because of how rare Nyarlathotep/Tatsuya content is. I had thought that I needed to pray this doujin would pop up second-hand on auctions but there were no records of anyone ever selling it...until I discovered that the artist uploaded it in full themselves! Unfortunately, they don't have plans to reprint it :( so I can't support them directly. Nonetheless, I'm thankful to them for having uploaded it! English isn't my first language and my Japanese might not be super good as well as my experience typesetting not being very extense, I tried my best but every mistake is mine orz I hope it's still understandable to read though! Please enjoy. I want more people to be interested in Nyarlathotep/Tatsuya (nyarutatsu)...

Author's Note (From their website): This is a book that I originally published when I had the most difficulty drawing, along with lack of content. I really wanted to draw the first 4 pages and the last 2 pages. I wanted to draw Tatsuya beating up Nyaru and Nyaru accepting the beating with a smile.

Nyaru-chan is talking about the movie "Ju*nji" that he saw on Afternoon Roadshow. It's a nonsensical game in which the things that appear in the squares (usually unbelievable things) tend to actually happen, and you can't escape until the participants keep rising to the top.

I would like to revisit Nyaru taking revenge in this absurd game as he smiles.

By the way, in the Final Game section, there are a lot of errors. Please pretend they didn't happen.

Also, all the characters that participate in the game other than Tatsuya are all Nyaru.
