“Tio Ze!” Her youthful voice called out to the male, “Tio Ze! I was wondering if you need any assistance decorating for Christmas?” Wendy asked, clasping her hands behind her back innocently. A genuine smile was on her lips as her teal eyes glistened. 

José was on the balcony smoking, still ever thankful that he had one. He wouldn’t have wanted to leave his guest alone to do so downstairs. Besides, it made hearing her voice through the door all the easier.

Her offer was a well-welcomed one. Upon seeing a rare gap in his schedule, for this time of year, especially with little chance of him needing to be called in at the last minute, the man had to make haste with her mother in arranging for her to visit for some time. At that cost, though, this meant also making haste in sprucing up the place. With just one strand of garland strung haphazardly across his table. This was hardly much, even compared to what little decorating he already did.

“That’s an excellent idea, menina! I mean to liven the place up for the season.” He doused his cigarette in the ashtray. “I’ll be in to get my decorates out!”

I love how in colloquial Brazilian Portuguese when someone calls your name you can call back “Eu!” (Me!) to let them know you heard them and they can say what they need to say.

It’s basically a shortened version of saying “That’s me!” as a response and I think that’s really funny and cute.
