Hi! I noticed youre also AUS based and ive been struggling to find info that isn't just links to US companies. I found a lil garden snail in my woolies lettuce today and I'm considering trying to keep him. ik they want a terrarium with a secure closure, cocopeat, and a cuttlebone, but what I'm struggling with is finding where to get these from Australia? all the substrate im finding is aquarium substrate and the terrariums seem to be for like plants so theres no secure lid or it won't allow airflow. Any help is appreciated!
Hello my aussie friend, thanks for asking!
So, my cornus (garden snails) are kept in a Reptile One tank, and my panda snail was kept in literally a plastic storage bin from kmart. It doesn't need to be fancy! If you hit up a pet shop, you might find one of those 10L betta starter tanks w a lid, and while they're awful for bettas they're great for 1 or 2 cornus. But, storage tubs are cheap, secure and perfectly adequate for a snail to live happily, just drill a couple holes in the top.
For substrate, in the bunnings gardening aisle (not the outside part with the plants, but the aisle with the seeds and fertiliser and stuff) you'll find these guys
Tumblr media
which is what I use. While you're there, I also got a bag of charcoal pieces to put in the drainage layer if you're making a bioactive viv. You can also find pebbles/rocks for drainage layers at bunnings.
For cuttlebone, hit up petbarn or somewhere similar and look in their bird section, you're looking for something like this

I hope this helps!! Good luck with your little friend <33

I JUST FOUND MY NEW HEAVEN IN YOUR PAGE I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS. Like, for one, I keep tiny dnails and so my terrarium isn’t that big. It has a really thick (more than a couple inches) of soil as substrate, just dirt. I have about 6 small snails but I barely ever see them hanging out there? They always stay hidden in the back behind the leaves or I can’t see them at all? I thought that maybe they were burying themselves but I keep a good moisture and temperature in there, and yet they aren’t very active at all. Also they barely eat any carrots or fruit I give them, I don’t know if they are just eating leaves or not at all? I’m very confused I just want them to be healthy
Hello my friend, I'm so sorry I didn't answer this sooner, idk how long since you put in the ask but tunglr.hell loves eating my notifications. anyway.
Don't worry! That's completely normal behaviour, a snails goal in life is: eat, sleep, make babies. They spend a LOT of time napping and they like to hide under leaves and decor while sleeping so they don't get spotted by predators. As long as you see little rasp marks or holes on the food, they're eating and happy.
They're fairly simple creatures lol. They're also nocturnal so have a peek at night time and you might see a bit more of them!

yesterday I got the “are you a boy or are you a girl” question from a six-year-old, and I told her that some people aren’t boys or girls (like me!) I was expecting her to be a little confused, but she nodded thoughtfully and said, “wow, just like snails.”

Hello!! I've been thinking about keeping some garden snails, and during my research learnt that they like to live in pairs. Is this true, and if so, how do I prevent them mating? I don't think I'm ready for hundreds of babies!! Thanks!
Hello friend, thanks for the ask! Sorry it took a hot minute to answer!
To be super honest, snails don't really "like" much other than food, they're just not really complex enough to require social interaction with other snails, so if you just want one go for it. I do love watching them interact with each other though!
One thing to keep in mind is that snails, being hermaphrodite animals, can self fertilise eggs, so even if you just get one you will still need to do regular soil checks to look for eggs. In fact, its probably even more important, as self fertilised eggs are usually poor quality and will lead to lots of runty/not very healthy snails in the clutch.
Avoiding a hundred snabies is pretty simple though, just dig around in the substrate once a week or so, and if you find eggs, crush or freeze them. I tend to give the eggs back to the snails afterward because it takes a fair bit of nutrients to lay so many and I like to try and give that back. Side note, you can't really prevent them from mating, it's just what they do lol.
It's up to you whether you want to keep one snail or many, but either way soil checks and destruction of eggs is an important part of snail keeping. I hope this helps!!

I’ve seen a lot of conflicting suggestions on what to put in an enclosure! If a flower pot is too hard and could risk a broken shell, what should I put in my snail terrarium to help them hide?
Hello friend!! Thanks for the ask.
I have a couple posts on this, here and here, but put simply, ceramic/stone/terracotta are nos, plastic and those resin hides sold for reptiles are both good! I honestly love the reptile hide I have for my snails, from a brand called Exo-Terra. My snails have taken many a tumble onto it with no problems. Plastic plant pots are great too! If you have something that you're not sure would be too hard or not, a nice thick cushion of sphagnum moss on top is a really easy way to make things safer, though I'd not do so with a ceramic/terracotta pot bc I worry the moss might slip off the round surface haha. I hope this helps!!

Hey I’m thinking of getting a pet snail in a few weeks so I can do research first. I saw your post on what not to put in their enclosure, So my question is what is safe and good to put in there?
Hi friend! Thanks for asking!
I have two posts with some ideas/examples here and here and to sum up:
Plants, real or fake. Use plants you've seen snails on/eating, I know spider plants, basil, and little lettuce plants are safe but if you're unsure, just use fake plants from the dollar store. take to em with scissors and snip off pointy bits, and give them a really good wash first.
Plastic plant pots, they give a nice little cave without the shell damage risk. Plastic cups work too
Sticks and leaves and such. Head into a foresty/natural area (avoid parks, backyards, roadsides etc to avoid chemicals and pollution and whatnot) and grab you a nice stick. Chuck it in the freezer for a couple days or the oven for a couple hours to avoid hitch-hikers.
Lil ornaments made from plastic are ok. There are some cuties at dollar stores that are nice hollow plastic and won't damage a shell
Moss, like sphagnum moss or just moss from outside, is also super!
If you have a pet store nearby, many reptile decorations are made of a kind of resin that I've found to be safe. feel the weight of it in your hand, the resin is lighter than stone/concrete. if you're unsure, just don't get it
Essentially the moral of the story is "is this made from 1. something edible that could be harmful (cardboard, paper, etc) and 2. if my snail falls on this, would it crack the snails shell. If you're concerned about a specific decoration, a nice chunky layer of sphagnum moss ensures a soft landing!

hi! i finally found a tank to put some snails in!! only issue though, is that i found it on the street and it has a crack in it.. it's not big enough for any snails to possibly escape, but im worried about it possibly being sharp and cutting a snail. should i put something over it? if so, what would you recommend?
hello hello! thanks for the ask.
The way snails move combined with their slime, means that they can technically crawl over a razor blade without getting cut, so I wouldn't stress about that. If you have concerns with the crack potentially getting larger/the tank breaking, or if you are concerned about getting cut while cleaning the tank, some aquarium silicone is a perfectly safe choice.
If you're having trouble finding that, look for some 100% silicone that cures with acetic acid, ideally clear but colour is up to you. When wet/uncured, it should smell like vinegar, then you just leave it for a couple days :) I hope this helps!!

Hi there!! I'm keeping three snails right now, and I've noticed that two of them will sometimes reach backward to scratch at their shells with their mouths, but only for a few seconds and then they leave it alone. I've looked it up and gotten mixed results that they either do that because they lack calcium or because they're cleaning their shells, so I thought I'd ask you what it means because you're the expert ^^
Oh my god, I'm so sorry I'm answering so late, tumblr loves not sending me notifications lol. Anyway, thanks for the question!
If you're not noticing any actual damage/marks to the shells, and you have a cuttlebone available at all times, its absolutely no problem. snails do this to clean their shells, and especially young, growing snails do it to smooth out the edge of the part that's growing! Just make sure they have calcium available all the time, and there's no worries :)
