I've reread the Hueco Mundo arc so many times, but each time, I still feel angry with Aizen, Ulquiorra, and the other arrancars. I love them all, and the concept of Hueco Mundo charms me, but I guess I love Orihime so much more. She didn't deserve to be gaslighted, abused, and mentally tortured.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it's painful to see her suffering because those centuries-old bitches decided to use her for their own gain.

I love orihime but I think the thing i understand least about her is why she would choose to heal Loly and Menoly like that, i mean wouldnt that be of huge disservice to Ichigo? Mans was doing the most to save *her* and this just seems counterintuitive to that idk idk
Well, I think the thing that matters most to the whole Orihime-Loly-Menoly situation is the context. Ten chapters before their assault on Orihime, Chad "loses" to Nnoitra, which she feels. Even though she insists to Ulquiorra that he's alive, it's clear she herself fears for his life considering the way she breaks down after Ulquiorra leaves. Ten chapters after that, Ichigo gets his ass kicked by Ulquiorra and she feels that too. Ever since her friends arrived, all they've been doing is getting hurt. It's pretty obvious that Orihime was on the last hinges of her sanity, considering how she was distraught enough to slap Ulquiorra like that, but Ichigo's peril just drives her further to the point of her despair, where she doesn't fight back and her eyes are pretty hollow. I might even go out on a limb and say Orihime was hoping they would kill her so her friends wouldn't have to suffer to save her. She didn't think she was worth that. Orihime feels justified in her self-hatred for most of this arc because she left to rescue her friends and them coming to save her feels counterintuitive to her efforts.
However, to answer your question: Orihime's plight only gets worse when Grimmjow saves her, claiming he was repaying her debt of healing him by getting rid of Loly and Menoly for her. The last thing Orihime would want is for someone to be injured that viciously in her name, as a favor to her, even if they were her own attackers. I mean, it's the same question as why doesn't Batman kill his parents' murderer/the killers of his friends and family, right? Having a moral code is easy, but sticking to it even when it doesn't benefit you takes a lot of deep-rooted conviction in your beliefs. Orihime is a pacifist, and she believes she would be better off dead. Grimmjow sees this as a "You scratch my back, I scratch yours" kind of a situation, so if Orihime had left the two for dead, it would be like reinforcing his worldview/proving him right. So, mainly, I would say it's because a) she's low-key suicidal, b) she's a pacifist, c) she doesn't want to accept an olive branch from Grimmjow, because in the very next scene, he expects her to repay his favor by healing Ichigo (which she refuses), and d) Loly/Menoly weren't Ichigo's opponents then so it's not like she was directly contradicting his efforts. As far as I can remember, the only enemies she healed were Loly/Menoly (who were only a threat to her and literally no one else). She never healed Grimmjow, Ulquiorra or Nnoitra, who were all threats to Ichigo.
Also, I think it's pretty ironic to call it a disservice to Ichigo considering he himself healed Ikkaku after their fight, protected Grimmjow from Nnoitra after their fight, and asked for his own hand to be cut off so he could be on equal footing with Ulquiorra. Sometimes heroes might do things that seem dumb to an audience, but those things serve to reinforce their core characteristics + flaws (if need be),,,,which,,,makes them interesting, even if we don't always agree with them!

Hi, first I'm sorry if this is an unwanted ask…but I admit I never really like orihime's character much, I preferred Ichiruki too. I recently decided to look into ichihime fans's interpretations, I read your analysis, I was pretty impressed. But one thing still bothers me about Orihime, why she scream "save me" in HM? Other characters say "save yourself." Is she really selfish? Other times she even helps the enemy out of kindness but why did she seem selfish here? No hate, genuinely curious.
No problem. I’ve been asked similar questions to this a lot over the years, criticizing Orihime’s actions in Hueco Mundo, and to be honest I can’t for the life of me understand why? I mean, when you consider that she’s a literal victim of child abuse, a fifteen year old girl with no real battle experience, who was told to stay out of the upcoming battles by Urahara because she’d only get in the way…by the time she’s faced with a situation as perilous and traumatizing as the lust arc…what exactly was she supposed to do?We know she isn’t selfish because she was in HM to begin with. Instead of waking Ichigo up that night in his bedroom and begging him to save her, she walked into enemy territory, completely alone, having no idea what sort of horrors might await her there, all in order to save him and everyone else. She sacrificed herself. And as you said, “Other characters say ‘save yourself,’” but Orihime did literally just that, only a few hours prior? When Ichigo was fighting a losing battle against Grimmjow, and she called out to him, begging him not to get hurt, telling him he didn’t have to win or fight anymore. He could leave her behind to die, and save himself. Just as long as he didn’t get hurt. We know she isn’t selfish. But when he’s dead at her feet, a corpse with a hole in his chest…and all she has is the promise that he would protect her and wouldn’t lose…Would it make any more sense to ask him to save himself, even though he’s dead and it’s already too late (or so it seemed)? Save himself, save her—Neither request would make any sense. They’re not supposed to make sense. They’re not supposed to be calm and rational and unselfish. Because these are not the actions or thoughts of a rational thinking person. She’s under extreme mental and emotional stress, having a psychological breakdown, talking to a corpse. The entire point of Ichigo dying in the lust arc was to build up suspense and have the greatest impact when he hollowfies and comes back to life, to create a sense of complete peril and hopelessness first. A feeling of “this is the end, all hope is lost, there’s no way out” while Ichigo’s dead on the floor, Ulquiorra is advancing on Ishida, and Orihime is being driven into madness—clutching at her face, babbling to herself, almost incoherently, because she’s just witnessed the death of her friend and their one and only hope, who always promised that he wouldn’t lose, all after she’s been threatened to be strapped down and force-fed by Ulquiorra (only for him to then describe the “psychological cages” she’s been put under by Aizen to Nnoitrra), then beaten and tormented by Loly and Menoly (twice!), then sexually assaulted by Nnoitrra, etc.And so, to me, it makes absolutely no sense to question the actions of a fifteen year old abuse victim who has spent the last 24 hours or so suffering such on-going physical assault, as well as psychological torment and trauma at the hands of extremely sadistic captors only to finally reach her breaking point, which was witnessing the brutal death of her friend and savior, right before her very eyes, as the killer continues to taunt her, even as she’s begging and pleading for his life. Read that back again and ask what the “right” way to behave is. Especially when we consider that her powers are linked to her emotional state, which was totally shattered. All hope was lost. That was supposed to be her breaking point, as part of the narrative, and it was.As I said, she wasn’t in a state of calm, rational thought. Nor was she being “selfish.” Because we know she isn’t selfish. She was traumatized. (And even if people still choose to ignore all of that, blame the abuse victim and call her selfish…one single isolated moment of selfishness would not cancel out the dozens of instances where she’s been completely selfless. Especially when it comes to Ichigo).

This is a picture of Montaser Al Sawaf, another Palestinian journalist killed by the IOF:
Tumblr media
I am continually enraged by the normalization of Palestinian people's deaths in mainstream western media, and the constant dehumanization of each of their lives. They are not just numbers -they are people who have dreams, ambitions, livelihoods, families, friends, hobbies, and interests.
The IOF is committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, is breaking dozens of international laws and UN Conventions -is committing mass genocide -but a small fraction of people in power get to determine the narrative of 'who is the REAL victim here,' by reinforcing IOF and American propaganda which sides with settler-colonial violence -and it is beyond abhorrent.

Could you explain to me Orihime’s psych while in Hueco Mundo? For instance why she didn’t fight back against the girls who was messing with her (I think she was capable of doing it). I know she was messed up but how damaged her psych was?
I mean, I think it speaks for itself. She’s a fifteen year old girl with little battle experience who’s being held captive against her will, threatened with beatings and force-feedings, as well as being emotionally and psychologically manipulated by her captors (Ulquiorra explains the ‘cages’ they’ve put her in in this chapter here). She’s traumatized. Tierney also explained the “fucked up on the inside” comment Grimmjow makes about her here, in regards to the “synchronized awareness” she’s been made apart of—meaning, as a part of that awareness, she’s just witnessed both Rukia and Ichigo’s ‘deaths,’ back to back, on top of all the rest of her trauma. The reason she went to HM in the first place was to keep her friends safe and she’s just watched them die on her behalf. So tbh, I don’t think it makes sense to question why she wouldn’t fight back. There’s only so much Tsubaki could do against two opponents at once at that point, especially when her powers are notably tied to her emotional state which was clearly extremely damaged at the time, having just witnessed Ichigo’s ‘death’ literally seconds before Loly and Menoly come knocking at her door.

I know you're pretty tired of hearing about I///Rs but I had to share this because it's so wtf. Apparently there's some people out there that believe Orihime went and got herself kidnapped to see if Ichigo would rescue her like he did Rukia ? What the hell? I mean, her friends were fucking threatened. And it kind of amuses me because Ichigo had to be convinced by Orihime to go save Rukia. He wasn't going to do it on his own.
lmao yeah that argument has been around for years. It’s just another example of how they twisted virtually every single aspect of Orihime’s character and motivations to make it seem like she was obsessed with Ichigo in a super toxic way and so desperate for his attention, to the point that she would “get herself kidnapped” just to see if he would rescue her. It’s so ridiculous it’s not even worth debunking, tbh. They read the manga with their ass.

I usually comes across an argument that Orihime being afraid of Ichigo’s hollow mask was a bad thing while Rukia was never afraid of it. Setting aside Rukia being a shinigami, did she ever meet any of Ichigo’s form? Especially his hollow form? I don’t think Rukia did. Man, I need to re read Bleach lol
god that’s such a weak argument, it’s insane how often I’ve seen them pedal it over the years. It’s like they didn’t put any real thought into it, it’s just so…simplistic? Narrow-minded? So many of their arguments are like this because they waste so much time comparing things that aren’t actually comparable due to a little thing called context. As if Rukia, who knows all about hollows and has been trained in combat against them for 200+ years—as if her reaction or response to Ichigo’s hollow should be in any way compared to Orihime, the girl whose experience and understanding of hollows at that point was basically slim to none (the only references she had were H!Sora and the Numb Chandelier one, both of whom tried to kill her and her friends. So, of fucking course she’s going to be wary towards hollows). Not only that, but they wax on and on about this as if Orihime was so horrifically terrified of Ichigo’s mask, as if it were some huge lingering issue that was never resolved, when in reality, if you read the Grimmjow battle chapters, she never once expresses a fear that Ichigo is going to harm her. Instead, she only ever expresses a fear for him, and his well-being, because she doesn’t understand what’s happened to him, doesn’t understand what it means for him to have a mask like that—no one’s ever explained it to her—and as I said, the only references she had to go off of were the Chandelier and her brother…and Kubo made sure to include a flashback of H!Sora to hammer that point home even further: that Orihime was afraid Ichigo would be consumed by his hollow just like her brother was. She was more afraid FOR him than she ever was afraid OF him. That’s the difference. And the thing is….that “conflict” (if you could even consider it that) of her being afraid lasted what? Three chapters? Only to then be resolved when she inevitably calls out to Ichigo and begs him not to get hurt anymore, proving that she still cares about him just as much as she always has and doesn’t see him as some big bad terrible monster? And when it’s all over and he floats up to the pillar and smiles at her, proving that he’s still the same old Ichigo and wasn’t actually consumed by the hollow as she feared—she thinks to herself, “thank goodness, he’s still alright/still Ichigo.” Meaning the conflict of her fear was wrapped up and resolved within the span of just a few chapters. Meaning it was a complete nonissue, that IR’s are still harping on for some reason lmaoIt’s just funny how they’ll go on and on about Orihime’s fear, and yet never mention that she was afraid FOR him, not OF him. And hell, they won’t even touch upon the fact that she still loved and cared about Ichigo regardless even after seeing him with his mask. She was still willing to sacrifice herself by telling him he didn’t have to fight for her anymore and could just leave her behind. She still immediately ran to his side, crying out in concern over his well-being, even after witnessing him become a “monster” who attacked one of their friends in the lust arc. Seriously, she had previous trauma with hollows because of her brother, and yet she saw Ichigo turn into that fucking thing right before her very eyes and still loved and cared about him unconditionally. And then in the final arc when Ichigo transforms, her trauma is again briefly rehashed, only to be immediately resolved when Ichigo says “relax, Inoue. This time, I’m still me.” And then tears of relief swell up in her eyes, because as long as she knows Ichigo is going to be okay and not consumed by his hollow, then she’s not afraid. Reinforcing, once again, that her fear was never that the hollow was going to harm her, but that it was going to harm Ichigo.
Oh, and as for the last point: Rukia was aware of Ichigo’s mask as she mentions it after Grimmjow invaded Karakura, but unless I’m mistaken I think the only time she actually saw Ichigo with his mask on was here during the brief Ichigo/Yammy battle after the lust arc.

this is such an unpopular opinion but i really wish orihime never reached out to ulquiorra in his final moments. not even because of shipping, but because he doesnt deserve it since the guy was her personal torturer the entire HM arc. like idgaf if he finally came to realize what the heart was….

I was wondering, as a Christian, should I like Uta no Prince-Sama? Because... in the manga Nanami used tarot cards (I know that the manga isn't the original material, but she could have used them in the game), and the pentacle shapes (Which could just be the outline of a star) and one of Ren's songs which has Akuma, the Japanese word for devil in the title. I'm just wondering if I should like it again. Maybe it's just me
Edit: QUARTET NIGHT have just made a song based on Faust for the Utapri Dramatic Masterpiece Show, I can't even - I don't even know any more

I'm trying to understand how it wasn't obvious that Ichigo felt something beyond friendship for Orihime when this boy came back from the dead to protect her. The DEAD. ☠ He has a hole in his chest from front to back, but hearing Orihime cry for help brings him back to life. And Orihime tried so gd hard to bring him back to life with her powers, but seeing him dead with a gaping hole where his heart used to be, on top of the psychological, mental, and physical torture was beyond too much for a 15-year-old girl to process that it just wasn't working.
I just- these gd kids! I'm so glad they get married at the end. They deserve the world.

What do you have to say about people saying that Orihime never stands up for herself and is badass? Saying that she’s always a damsel in distress and never jumps into action etc
I mean, it's important to remember that Orihime didn't start out as some battle-trained warrior with decades of experience like the rest of the shinigami. There's only so much she could realistically do, given her powers and limited experience. And even when she tried to fight in SS arc, Ishida ordered for her to be removed. Then Urahara ordered for her removal in the arrancar arc, as well. She was held back and stifled in the early part of the series.
But even so, you still have her standing up to the Numb Chandelier hollow to protect Tatsuki. You see her walk into HM, seemingly to her death and whatever other horrors await her there, all to keep her friends safe, instead of waking Ichigo up when she went to his bedroom and begging him to save her like a damsel in distress. Then she gets beaten and terrorized by Loly and Menoly, but doesn't cry for help. Then she stands up to Grimmjow when he has his hands wrapped around her throat, threatening her, but she stands her ground against him and refuses to relent and heal Ichigo like he says, all because she doesn't want to him to get hurt anymore (instead of healing him and crying for him to protect her like a damsel in distress). Then when Ichigo is losing the Grimmjow battle, she calls out to him and tells him he doesn't have to fight for her anymore like she's some damsel in distress--instead, he can give up and leave her behind to die, just as long as he doesn't get hurt anymore. Then she's restrained and assaulted by Nnoitra, but she still isn't concerned with her own safety--only Ichigo and Nel's, as she's forced to watch Ichigo be tortured by Tesla. Then she stands up to Ulquiorra's orders given to them by Aizen and uses her shield to protect Ichigo during the first part of the Ulquiorra battle.
Then in the FB arc she throws her arms out and stands up to Tsukishima and says she can't let him get away if he's the one who attacked Ishida. Then she stands up to Riruka and uses her memory of the lust arc to strengthen her resolve. Then she stands up to Ginjou in the Game Space and when he calls her sadistic she says "sadistic? I don't mind you calling me that. If you don't want to get hurt, don't attack when I say not to."
Then she literally battles Yhwach himself, side-by-side with Ichigo.
I don't see any of those moments as her being a damsel in distress. The only time she's ever even asked for help or to be protected was when she was pushed to the edge of sanity and psychologically broken after seeing Ichigo be killed in the lust arc. She's stood up for herself and others multiple times. But people don't recognize it, because they have such a limited view of what being a "bad ass" is. The think it only counts if she's swinging a sword and kicking some major ass. They forget that the realm is broader than that, especially for healer types like Orihime.
But also, most importantly, I think people forget that Orihime doesn't have to be a bad ass to be a good or interesting character. And that if every single character was a sword-swinging bad ass like Kenpachi or Byakuya, then Bleach would be incredibly boring because there would be no variety.
