smeck treck: "baby's wearing blue jeans" by mac demarco
right here we've got something real legitimate. smeck treck. i listen to a track and i write wassup about it. any track. doesn't have to be new. it's just what ever i want to write about. today we're seeing wassup with that mac demarco guy and his song i already mentioned in the title and really don't need to say again
this song makes me want to take off my clothes and light up a newport gold 100 and just cruiiiiiiiiiiiiiise with the top down. cool thing is, that's probably what mr. demarco wants me to think when i hear this song. seriously dude, mac gets it. this song captures all the right elements of a silly yet oddly sexy 70s pop song but then just throws all of that shit through some sorta fuckery that is a mixture of both ariel pink and the sonics, all with a lipstick-red smile.
"blue jeans" shouldn't be as great as it is. conventionally, it's ugly. the mix is mud and the falsetto is pitchy - but you know damn well i wouldn't take this shit any other way. its imperfections make it perfect - mac demarco really does give a shit, but only to a certain extent. he knows how to write a beautiful earworm of a tune but he also knows how to make it rude, crude, and sexy.

talking smeck with: arthur hosford from scarlet sight and life in reverse
provided this blog doesn't go belly-up by next week, here's the inaugural installment of "talking smeck." today, i'm talking to Arthur Hosford III from Scarlet Sight and Life in Reverse.
sb: do you find it embarrassing that your first interview is being done by yourself?
ah: i wouldn't call it embarrassing, just weird. seems a bit self-centered too but it's fun so why not?
sb: do you think the name smeckbeck is stupid?
ah: it's catchy but definitely stupid. i love it.
sb: just checking.
sb: so what exactly is scarlet sight?
ah: we're a group of guys who have bonded over great friendships and our mutual love for music.
sb: why isn't the album out yet?
ah: we want it to sound the way it should and we're just really determined to get it right the first time. we started working on it back in july last year and we originally planned to get it out at the end of the summer. that extended to january, then february, now we're looking at spring. thankfully, we're not looking to push it back any more. the progress has been really good lately.
sb: do you think anybody's going to listen to your band?
ah: a few people, definitely. whether they like us or not, we'll see. we've got over 100 fans on facebook right now so we've definitely reached ubiquity. but seriously, i've been getting good feelings that people will dig us. we've been showing around a few demos and the songs really seem to stick.
sb: you recently entered the "young wild & free mane soundcheck game" or something, why did you and is it worth it?
ah: oh yeah, the soundoff. it was something we felt we needed to try. i honestly hate competitions because i don't believe music is about winning, but the chance to play at kahbang was something we couldn't just pass up. it has already been worth it so far, we've got a bit more exposure from it. the downside is i just don't really dig the demo we sent. i like the song but it's definitely not at its final form yet.
sb: is there going to be anything more from life in reverse any time soon?
ah: there won't be any soon, but there will be more later. i've been thinking about changing the name but i'm really hesitant. there's still a sound and feeling i'm trying to capture with it but i'm too focused on the scarlet sight album to bother with that right now.
sb: heard you have madonna's like a virgin on vinyl - why?
ah: why the fuck not?
