"This small town in the Michigan Thumb has only 2,700 residents but it seemed like every one of them turned out for a parade. They were welcoming home one of their own."
Thousands of people clapped, held signs, waved American flags and hollered their support for Army Staff Sgt. Travis Mills. It was the first time the native son had been home since losing all four limbs in a land mine explosion in Afghanistan in April. He's one of just four soldiers to survive such injuries.

"A small Connecticut town was sent reeling in grief and confusion Friday after a popular fifth-grade teacher shot and killed a knife-wielding prowler in a black ski mask, only to discover it was his 15-year-old son."
No immediate charges were brought against the father, Jeffrey Giuliano, in the slaying of his son, Tyler, who was gunned down in his aunt’s driveway next door to his own home around 1 a.m. Thursday.

"As police frantically worked to figure out how his fiance's 24-year-old daughter had vanished, a Michigan pastor who had turned to God to shed his violent past went to his flock with a request: pray for her. But all along, authorities say, he knew the sordid truth about where the young mother was."
The pastor, ex-convict John D. White, later confessed to killing Rebekah Gay to fulfill a fantasy of necrophilia, police said Friday. White drank four or five beers before going to the woman's mobile home and repeatedly striking her head with a mallet and strangling her with a zip tie, according to court documents.

"A New York dog whose owner was hospitalized became so forlorn without his human companion that he ran away from home to find his friend, CBS New York reported."
Zander, a white husky, became depressed after John Dolan, of Bay Shore, Long Island, was admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital with skin ulcers. Zander's loneliness was apparently too much to bear. After sneaking out of the house, he took off on a two-mile journey to Dolan's hospital in West Islip. "It's not just houses. We're in an area where there's a nature reserve there," Dolan said, noting Zander had to cross a highway and a stream to get to the hospital. A hospital employee found the dog and called the number on his collar; Dolan, lying in a hospital bed, picked up. "I think he missed me and he decided, 'This is it, I'm going to get him,'" Dolan said.

"Mary Hixon, 91-years-old and mayor of River Falls, Alabama for over 30 years, has used taxpayer money as her personal funds for many years. Given her advanced age, one wonders if she was a criminal or just confused. Hixon admitted to stealing a total of $201,601."
She resigned as mayor and was sentenced to five years in prison, but the sentence was suspended due to her age. The judge in the case also ordered restitution. Her estate is responsible if she dies before all the money is refunded.

"The story of a Clovis horse breeder who pretended to be of French royalty and her doctor-husband who faked her death...will cost the couple $1.55 million."
The final bill was arrived at Monday when a jury ruled that Dr. Michael Weilert and his wife, Genevieve de Montremare, must pay $850,000 in punitive damages to a Southern California couple who contend they were tricked into buying the doctor's ranch. The verdict ended the latest chapter in a bizarre civil trial involving Weilert -- director of Pathology & Clinical Laboratories for Community Regional Medical Centers and founding member of Pathology Associates in Clovis -- and his wife who masqueraded as a French countess and a medical doctor with a doctorate in horse genetics for more than decade. "It's a soap opera," said a juror from Fresno named Samantha, who declined to give her last name. "Someone should write a book."

"Police say they found a woman’s decomposing body in an apartment, and her husband and dog were sitting nearby when they responded to a call on Monday."
Officers received a call about a nasty smell in the south Denver apartment building at 1240 South Birch Street. When they arrived, they found the body slumped on a couch. Records show police asked the husband how long his wife had been dead. He told officers, “She’s not dead. She’s fine.” Meanwhile, the dog, a Great Dane, made an effort to guard the woman’s body.

"Naugatuck High School's football program has been fined $7,500 and placed on two years of probation for improper payments made to the families of three prospective transfer students."
Investigators say former coach Rob Plasky and Frank Johnson Jr., the football booster club president gave one player's family $1,000 to help facilitate a transfer, and paid $300 for the players to attend a football camp at Central Connecticut State University.

"Biologist keeps tabs on Massachusetts' rarest salamander. “I feel like I can’t stop searching for these guys while I have a hot hand,” Kubel said recently, about his luck in finding the elusive amphibians."
Jacob Kubel is a man on a mission. The 36-year-old conservation scientist with the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife’s Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program crisscrosses the state every year in search of the Commonwealth’s rarest salamander — Ambystoma opacum, also known as the marbled salamander — to document where it is breeding and to get a feel for how the population is doing.

"Would you live in a place called Shitterton? The small town in the middle of rural Dorset was just voted as having the most embarrassing town name."
Shitterton beat out Scratchy Bottom and Crapstone to win the most embarrassing title. The town’s name is so embarrassing, and so funny, that city officials are constantly dealing with youths trying to steal town signs. In 2010, officials carved the town’s name into a half ton chunk of stone to stop the thieves.

"A man tried to rob a Pennsylvania bank of $1 because he hoped to be sent to a federal prison nearby, police said."
Jeffrey McMullen, a 50-year-old regular customer of an AmeriServ bank in Northern Cambria, handed notes to two tellers Friday demanding a dollar, according to a police complaint reported by The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown. The tellers thought it was a joke, police said. He then spoke with a new accounts employee and repeated he was robbing the bank for a buck. Police say McMullen apparently wanted to be prosecuted federally so he could be taken to a prison in central Pennsylvania. Police could not immediately say why.

"A huge eye of an unknown creature was found, washed up on the beach in Pompano Beach, Florida."
The Sun Sentinel reported that Gino Covacci found the eye when he noticed a ball-like object on the beach. He picked it up and put it in a plastic bag and left it in his refrigerator. The Sun Sentinel reported that Covacci notified a police officer who told him to call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commision. USA Today reports that the commission has sent the eyeball to study and to identify what animal it belongs to.

"A Memphis mother is accused of lying about her daughter’s death and taking money from co-workers to pay for the child’s funeral."
Of course, the funeral never happened and that’s when 24-year-old Jessica Banks was arrested. Police say Banks admitted she told co-workers at New Breed Logistics her 22-month-old daughter died from an asthma attack. She told investigators she did it because she wanted attention and friends, and wanted someone to feel sorry for her. Police say she also accepted $410 from her co-workers to help pay for the funeral.

"Armed robbers make big mistake during home invasion...It was an armed home invasion that may have seemed like a nightmare but that was all too real."
Around midnight in rural Coventry, Rhode Island, police said four men armed with guns, wearing black clothes, ski masks and gloves, broke in while the residents were sleeping. A woman said her 42-year-old brother, his wife, and their 13-year-old daughter live here. "They tied them up, they had guns, my brother had a gun out at his head,” she said. Luckily the four armed intruders left after they realized they had the right house, but the wrong people.
