CHAPTER 13 FIELDWORK
i am interviewing my Stepfather, Mr. Ojo is from Nigeria, Iseyin Town in Oyo State. He lived in a two-parent household and had 5 siblings one died later he is second to last of the youngest sibling. He is out of 5 he was the first to immigrate to the New York 1990, Yoruba was his first language and English was his second language,  his uncle advised him to go to the united states to further his studies and come back to Nigeria to work for his company as an accountant and  got help from his uncle also filed for visa then received his visa “He said out of luck he gotten a visa”, left Nigeria to continue to furthering his education at the age of 25, When he was college and tried to socialize out of his culture he didn't understand the united states way of speaking English because it sound so different from the dialect for example in Nigeria the way they speak English is in pidgin English and  because Nigeria was colonize by United Kingdom / Britain and they can understand their way of speaking English because it somewhat similar, while the US citizen pronunciation while speaking so it was hard him to understand and hard for the US citizen to understand him as well since he spoke with a deep Nigerian Pidgin English accent but he found people that are Nigerian, Cameroon, Togo and Ghanaians *just to name a few*, he faced challenges and did not have social security and green card also found it difficult to find job and when he settle down he first enter the university he thought that his parents would help provide money but the employees at the university did not really help him but treated him like a real foreigner that’s when he first felt like he hit reality in the United States and  His first time feeling hopeless then planning to go home but he decided to stay in the US for great opportunities. Found a job that will pay him under the table since he could not work illegally did that for a couple of years in order to save money so that he can be paying his school fees throughout the four years of undergraduate then Mr. Ojo first job was Tedious his role was to be a delivery man and carry the grocery to the customer house but from house to house he was getting paid 75 cent each altogether made 25 dollar include tips from customer was there for almost a year and then someone rescued him from the job and new job was a security job was paying him 6. 50 cent per hour that motivated him to save his money towards his education, 1996 he had his first born and second born in 1998 both born in New York and Mr. Ojo paid all of his school fees independently without the help of his parents then graduated and received an undergraduate degree from City University of New York in 1999. Then in 2001 gained his green card and  moved to Virginia in 2001,  because he did not want to raise his children in a bad environment and thought to relocate with his family in a better and safer environment, his father passed away in 2001 but because of him not having a green card he was not able fly and attend his father funeral soon he found a job “Wachovia” as an accountant did that for 5 years resign from there was racially profile because he was promoted as a senior accountant so he had 5 workers who were Caucasian  and the employees hated him and made up excuses so they cannot work with him from because of his accent but they were nice and friendly towards him in the beginning until they worked under him basically they were jealous that a man who listen to the rules and gets the job done is getting a higher position than his peers and then took his transportation job more seriously. In 2012 he applies for a master’s degree from Virginia State University by majoring in Community Counseling. He was there for 2 years and graduated successfully in 2014 then had his business which was doing well but then later the business plump then got a job that as a counselor dealing with people who had mental health issues and abuse. When he drives on the road in the beginning before he has papers and green card, he drives safely so he won’t get racially profiles from the police, but he never experiences thankfully. advice from Mr. Ojo as an immigrant you will fear deportation since you’re an illegal immigrant till you receive your documents, make sure follow the law, like try to not commit any crimes that might lead them to trouble with court and law enforcement that might result to their deportation. In conclusion, my stepfather story can relate to the chapter 13 push and pulls like his pulls were to come to US to improve his education because he wanted to go back home to work for his uncle and his pushes were his uncle encouraging him to go the US, He then faced bridges and barriers like barriers were lack of support from parents and discriminated against also felt discouraged in the beginning since he was by himself only himself he had to help at that point in his life bridges was finding a job due to him not having a green card or illegal documents like social security. His story was very inspirational since I learned something new about him not giving up it shows to prove that all immigrants will work so hard to improve and be better to have their work and have a successful American dream.

CH.10 YOUR TURN FIELDWORK
How Does the News Media Cover Social Class and Inequality?
In this article it similar to the Max Weber theory of social class in the text I see that Rick Ross used his own power and gifted his son a property and the power to run a franchise that will help his son value and become his own boss at a young age, this could help make his son start being really serious and making people look at him differently as a young rich boss and having a great mindset for his own life and business ventures
The article is relatable to Karl Marx theory of social class, Shein is a online fashion business based in China and is now the biggest fast fashion franchise and are worth 100 billion but under pay their workers they pay them about 500 yen which is in-fact not enough and treating them poorly but the company themselves are being praised but the workers are being treated like animals but Shein needs to realize that if it weren’t for these workers they would’ve not been at the biggest fashion brand if it weren’t for the workers there for 24 hours in the factory.
In this article about same sex marriages being legal Pierre Bordieu had said that a group of individuals that share a common nature, some Americans negatively feel like same sex marriage being legal while but a lot feel like it’s good for society this article shows me what bordieu means by people having same nature and opinions and being understood with their beliefs in others sexuality.

CHAPTER 9 FIELDWORK
1. why did you choose the questions that you chose? I chose the questions because i was interested and curious of other’s opinions about the culture of relationships.
2. what pattern do you see from the response? all of the responses have in common is about their feelings on the relationships what should be right like thinking of the consequences of the outcome and also their self being rebellious and not caring about other people say
3. is there anything that surprise you? Not really, I expect the response to be neutral for example the first person Interviewed I definitely agree with her that poly relationships can cause to jealousy and problems.
4. if you were doing this again, what would you do differently? What I would do is have more questions and more people to interview and also interview with a certain amount of time like 50 secs each.

CHAPTER 6 FIELDWORK
How long has your family lived in this country?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How long has your family lived in this country?. My father Idris landed in the United States in 1984 settle then used his money to create a grocery shop that sells ingredients and many things African, Caribbean and Latinos can buy to cook at home, and items that people used back from their hometown once he open that shop, he was recognized on newspapers, Many people came to shop and were recognized for being the first to have an African shop in Baltimore City since the African community and people outside of Africa recognized him. Two years later, he settled down with my stepmother Eunice, who is African American, and daughter, Joani, in 1987; they had been married for awhile then. She later got pregnant with my half brother, Idris Jr. raised my brother from birth to a young adult (high-school). In 2001, my mom visited the United States. and met family and went back; then, in 2002, she was gifted a visa from family members and was gifted a ticket from her late brother. Later in 2002, my father divorced my stepmother. then a year later in 2003, he went to a party, and my aunt introduced my mom to my father. They met and got together, and in that same year, Mom got pregnant then, in June 2004. I was born; my Mom worked hard and was a nurse for over 20 years. till this day, on 2010 my father Idris sadly passed away when I was 5, it was just me and mom till this day.
Where did they come from?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nigeria is a West African country it between the Sahel to the north and the Gulf of Guinea to the south in the Atlantic Ocean, it is the most populous country in Africa, and the world’s sixth most populous country. Both of my parents come from different states / town in Nigeria. Both of my parents tribe is Yoruba, my dad is from Oyo State, and my mom is from Ondo State both states have their dialect and speak Yoruba differently. ( I don’t know much about my dad life in Nigeria), my mother went to school with a full family she had older brothers that were making sure she was focused in school and a little sister and younger brother and two family household, she had a job she was farmer and sold chickens and lamb and many animals in her market and also had a job at the airport. My mom was taking care of her nephew who was having a trouble in school in the United States so his mother brought him to the Nigeria to calm down and experience the schools in Nigeria because of my mom taking care of him the mother appreciated my mom being so kind that she gifted my mom a visa and my mom told her late brother he then bought her a ticket but she didn’t want to leave but my grandmother told her to go but my mom was worried because my grandma Is old and needs to taken care of.
Has your family embraced American Nationalism?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, my mother and my African American family has embraced the American patriotism. My mom likes American because she feels like she has more freedom and independence. My family celebrates 4 of July which is not common in Nigeria they take it really seriously because this is time for family time and Thanksgiving is another holiday we celebrate and have a family together, my African American family usually invite me to holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving especially since it’s a great way to celebrate with family since everyone is busy. another holiday that Nigerians celebrate is Easter Sunday, in Easter Sunday my family go to church and pray and lastly my mother embraces the Nigerian culture then USA because that’s her home.
If some of your family have migrated from other parts of the world, how do they integrate their American identity with their ethnicity identity.
Tumblr media
My family connect from food, music, gatherings like church, party, cookout, and American dream. In my culture we eat similar food in west African culture but Nigeria make cuisine like Egusi, Efo Riro, Ayamese (Designer Stew), Ogbono Soup, Ewedu, Okra it goes well with Swallow like for example Eba, Amala, Iyan (Fufu) and Semolina. Jollof Rice, Ofada Rice usually prepared in home but mostly a party favorite. Another one is language for me I speak Yoruba small but I understand it correctly but can’t speak in a full conversation, even though I get judged for speaking English instead of Yoruba I think it’s because I was born and raised in the States but I think even if I don’t speak it I think it’s good that I hear the person. Lastly another popular one is Thanksgiving in Nigerian culture in America is popular in church they have events to come to church and pray and worship together and they give food and stay in church for about 3 or 4 hours (celestial church) this usually happens to family who are religiously wealthy.

CHAPTER 5 FIELD WORK
★ Code Switching
youtube
Code Switching is a defense mechanism people who use it to show they are apart of the group of people, so people that do this switch by their tone or actions towards others.
★ Race
Tumblr media
Race is a group of people that are divided in groups due to their different skin color and facial features. It’s used in society where people describe a person by their skin color. Race has been used for over centuries and decade for people to describe others when communicating.
Tumblr media
★ Culture
In culture people have seen photos like this and believed that Africans are suffering when they have not been to the country to judge from documentaries and films that spread lies. people viewing Africa as poor, undeveloped, needing support but most African countries are doing quite fine and protecting their country and making efforts to help their homeland.
★ Miscegenation
From reading this article, this couple loved each other but the public judged them because they felt it was unacceptable for a white man and black women to marry so the judge offered them to leave the state or prison but it wouldn’t make any difference because the lovings wanted right to marry also to be protected by the law. Even if the law try to punish them the love between the two is strong it won’t work because they both sacrificed their life for love.
★ Instiutional Racism
Tumblr media
In this photo I view a young gifted black man who is going to school and focus on his studies for his future but there is people who sees his color and view him as a gang member or potential murder from his skin color or judge him from is clothing. Young black men who actually have a future they plan for it get’s ruined by being falsely accused for someone else action or misunderstanding.
★ Hypodescent
Tumblr media
Naomi Osaka who is referred as black but is mixed with Haitian descent and Japanese descent she claims and identifies with her Japanese side more since her mother is of Japanese descent and father is Haiti descent. Most people think she is pure black and put her in that category mainly but she is indeed mix race since she shares two races but she identifies her Japanese side which is where she was born in.

• I agree with my groups ranking especially number 1 because do no harm is the way explained it made me reconsider my number 1 ranking
• Yes, my idea change especially when the doctors used her cells from what we saw from the video it seems like the mother wasn’t aware but the family found out later on about the cells it’s seem sketchy of the doctors but one of the ranking that’s similar to this is the do no harm because of the doctor did not ask for consent it is like crossing boundaries from someone or their parties without asking consent without over bounding rules it seem like the doctor didn’t care for their well being just used for example I think their has been many metaphors about black women being used for experiments.

The Culture of Consumerism
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What I learned is about the assignment is the items I use hear are items that mostly are needs for me daily that I see from the internet or people around me that use have these items, but I like that I have these items especially clothes are something that is needed to wear everyday, my shoes so I can walk and run comfortably, my school supplies for school I have many pens, pencil to write so I have stuff so I can not complain about it that’s good to have many supplies. I kinda contribute with consumerism just not items that everyone has I am the type of person that manage if someone gives me something I take care and manage the shoes, clothes, any item that given to me as a gift of kindness i will accept it but I do go on apps like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok and see some new things that attract to me that I see myself consuming. I think everyone consumerism is different from mines, as for me i try to manage my money and be grateful for the items given to me or items I know I can buy and I have the money for it.
