Combined with the central chronograph hand, our theodolite scale allows to measure a dozen of medical and technical units: pulse, respirations and drops per minute. Tempo, typing speed or printing speed. Revolutions, steps, strokes, distance, litres or gallons per minute… the applications are many.

We are using a Swiss integrated chronograph with 13 lines of French inch in diameter. The French inch is still used in watchmaking because the measure is believed to have been imported by French Huguenot watchmakers who sought asylum in Switzerland from religious persecution.

Woodshores AB is crowdfunding its latest watch on Kickstarter, the world's leading funding platform for creative projects.

Touted as an entry point to luxury time keeping, the Siduna Expedition Chronograph is released under the 92 year old brand Siduna, is powered with a Swiss self-winding mechanism and is be Made in Europe up to 90% in collaboration with local luxury factories.

The watch is styled after late 19th century instruments and made in austenitic stainless steel.

The mechanism is customized for the brand in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and is decorated according to watchmaking tradition with blue screws, machine turning and Geneva stripes.

The dial is crafted in brass from a machine turned mould, and is planned for release with Roman numerals in sterling silver plating or champagne, with Arabic numerals in blue or black. The steel hands are blue tempered or rhodium plated and are inspired by steam engine telegraphs.

The dial uses a scale that allows to measure up to a dozen medical and technical units.

The elaborate multi-layer design of our dial combines different surface finishings, and it has been machined turned in the traditional way on a master mould before being stamped on brass plates and galvanoplated with Sterling silver.

We took delivery this week of the first steel hands of our new project.

The arrow shaped tip is inspired by Engine Order Telegraphs, also called "chadburn", which were used on ships to communicate the desired speed to the engine room.

Tempered steel undergoes a heat treatment to make it more flexible and thus less prone to breaking under stress. This ancient metalsmithing technique was introduced in the manufacturing of tower clocks, portable clocks, pocket watches and wrist watches.

Today, steel tempering remains a prized finishing that gives the surface a deep blue. It is used for the steel parts of a watch such as the hands and the screws.

In Spring 2021, we started working on a project that uses tempered steel hands. Their arrow-shaped design draws inspiration from steam engine telegraphs. Using modern day process, they are punched from a sheet of steel and subsequently given a curved surface under a hydraulic press. They are then tempered through a traditional process to achieve the desired hue.

The process of steel tempering consists of applying a heat treatment to ferrous metals such as iron or steel to increase their toughness, and paradoxically decreasing their hardness. Basically the steel is made mode ductile (more flexible), which inversely makes it less brittle and less prone to break under stress.

The technique predates watches by at least a millennium and the oldest know example of tempering is a steel axe from 1200 to 1100 BC found in Galilee. Tempering was known across Asia, Europe and Africa. It was introduced in clock making and made its way into portable clocks, pocket watches and ultimately, wristwatches.

The deep blue coating that tempering gives to steel hands and screws is a byproduct. The real purpose it to make them more flexible and less prone to breaking in case of shock or excessive force.

With the various technological advances made in metallurgy during the 19th and 20th century, newer and better steel alloys made it possible to circumvent the need for tempering. However, the trade is still taught in metal smithing workshops and watchmaking schools.

Siduna was the name of a city in ancient day Phoenicia, where the alphabet and modern numerals were invented. We like to think of our name as meaning "the roots".

We still produce watches like Siduna did in the 19th and early 20th century: by procuring premium Swiss movement, assembling and servicing the watches ourselves.

Our straps are made with REACH certified German calf leather and they undergo more than 70 different steps before reaching the final result.

The same goes for all our other components: the movement receives a custom made front module designed and manufactured by Alfred Rochat & Fils in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and each watch is carefully assembled, tested and inspected by an expert watchmaker in our European workshop.

Our watches are made to order by a highly trained watchmaker in our European workshop, before undergoing several day of thorough testing. Our first 21st century collection, the M3440 chronograph, not only renders a military design from the 1970s but has all the specifications to live up to it: ISO 764 Magnetic Resistance, ISO 1413 Shock Resistance and ISO 22810 Water-Resistance.

For this collection we use self-winding chronograph movements based off the Valjoux 7750 and customised for us by Alfted Rochat & Fils in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.

Own a piece of military history.

The design of the M3440 directly descends from early Hanhart German pilot chronographs. It evolved from the 1950s to reach its current form around 1973 with the modern looking Erwin Piquerez case.

In 2018 we created this rendition with a custom ETA 7750 movement that can withstand 5,000 G of acceleration inside the cockpit of a jet fighter.

Good enough inside a cockpit, good enough around your wrist.

In 1973, near to 400 pilots of the Saab 37 #viggen, one of the most advanced jet fighters of the time, received a Lemania 817 chronograph to time their manoeuves. Fourty-five years later, we created a faithful rendition of the iconic chronograph with a custom Swiss movement that can withstand up to 5,000 G (more than 100 times what a jet pilot will endure).

We take several days to thoroughly test the watch in various positions for winding and timing because our customers expect a flawless timepiece that pays tribute to Swiss and Scandinavian engineering.

Fashion fades, style is timeless...

Even though it was designed one decade before the near collapse of the watch industry, the M3440 still looks great 50 years later. We tried to stay as true as possible to the original and only added a self-winding feature, which became standard on mechanical chronographs beyond the 1980s.
