A Very Shiny Photo Dump

Hello trainers! Has it been a busy year for you? It certainly has for me. There’s been so much shiny research going on that I barely have time to document it all! Spooky Shiny Season

Hi Trainers! It’s that season where we all bring in the harvest and shut our doors against the cold of the wind. Well, unless you’re shiny hunting! Today I’m going over my notes for an awesome tribute shiny hunt I put together in honor of my wife’s Drawtober comic! She’s been doing them every year for four years. If you haven’t ever had the pleasure of reading them I encourage you to check them out here (this links to the first comic of the first year).

Introduced in the first year is a little Phantump friend, who we will be hunting today. Sometimes you can’t wait for an outbreak to get your shiny, especially if you want to time your hunt for a gift or event. With some clever thinking though, you can use a specific area and a well timed sandwich to help along your odds.

I found a spooky place in Kitakami that spawned Phantump along with a lot of other spooky Pokemon! The difference between Phantump and the other spooky Pokemon in the area is that Phantump is a GRASS type along with being a GHOST type Pokemon. To encourage more to the area, we needed a grass type shiny sandwich. Remember trainers, when your sandwich gets so big that putting the top bun on it will make a mess, just make it open faced and toss that top bun away! It will be just as effective.

It took all night and the Phantump don’t come to the area as quickly as when there is an outbreak but come dawn my Phantump were still around (Phantump are one of the handful of GHOST type Pokemon that will come out in daytime and nighttime). It was only a matter of time until we found her, noticeable even in daytime by her bleached white bark!

Phantump put up quite the fight and even tried to take my lead Pokémon, my fearless Talonflame Firen, down with her! After many tries to get her in a premier ball (my wife’s favorite), she finally settled into her new home.

Now is a great time to hunt for Phantump as sightings for these, Drifloon, Greavard, and Mimikyu with the Crafty Mark have increased with the coming of the spooky season! Look for the sparkling gold marks on your map, make a shiny ghost sandwich and find your spooky shiny! Stay shiny, everyone! ✨

Dream Big, Dream Shiny

I may be the Shiny Professor but sometimes things even get by me. Long before my shiny diglett, this lady sauntered up and fell asleep next to Snorlax and I just didn’t realize she was shiny because we were at the beach and all of everyone’s colors just seemed washed out or paler than normal. It wasn’t until I was going through my boxes and saw her sparkling that I realized… ✨

Cyclizar - The Under Rated Speedster Shiny

Hi trainers! Today we’re going after one of Paldea’s foundational Pokémon, Cyclizar! What is special about Cyclizar? Well, aside from being the main method of transportation and being the link between some very famous legendary Pokémon, they’re super adorable!

Who wouldn’t want to add this precious Pokémon to their shiny collection? It’s a bit of a challenge beyond your normal hunt, though!

There are only a couple of places where you can find wild Cyclizar. Believe it or not, Cyclizar are somewhat rare encounters. There are only two places in Paldea where you can find them but I like East Area 2 best because there’s a lot of room to run around (which you’re going to need). In order to really bring out the Cyclizar though, we’re going to need a good sandwich.

Here’s the recipe I used:

1 serving of cucumber

1 serving of pickles

3 servings of avocado

Two servings of herba mystica in any combination except sweet & sweet, sweet & sour, and sour & sour. 🌿

Wow! Look at all of those Cyclizar! I guess they really like avocados. Now instead of knocking the Cyclizar out I drove very quickly around the area, giving them time to drive in and out and bring new ones. And you’re definitely going to want to mount up - the Cyclizar move fast!

For my hunt, it took a long time for my shiny Cyclizar to appear but when she did it was immediately obvious! Their cream colored accents stick out a lot, making them easy to identify. The cyan bit on their cheeks coupled with the cream color I’d really reminiscent of, well, retro bicycles! Shiny Cyclizar might be a stand out but when you see one you need to act FAST! They’re just as speedy as their regular variant brethren. Stay mounted to catch up and be sure to take advantage of any sort of pause.

She almost looks dizzy here! I encountered my shiny Cyclizar in the very last moments of my shiny sandwich. I cycled through a lot of Cyclizar before finding my shiny because I didn’t have time to chase them down and knock them out for better odds. If I hadn’t encountered my shiny, I would have recovered my ingredients by restoring my save and repeated the process.

I had to introduce my shiny Cyclizar, who I named Bianchi after a very old type of bicycle, to Miraidon given that they are sort of related (??). Related or not, they were fast friends!

A Sleepy Shiny

Did you know that you can find shiny Pokémon in the new Pokémon Sleep app? Apparently the odds are about 1/450 which is really good as compared to normal hunts but you may have to record your sleep more than a few times to get one!

BABY ACQUIRED!

so, I decided to take a break from shiny hunting and decided to do a living dex in legends arceus. there was a ruffled outbreak and so I decided to head there. when I got there I heard the noise but didnt debut and thought "oh, must have been a rufflet" but it wasnt. thought it was a glalie or a snorunt nearby...not them. I looked at the map an realised, this is on top of where zorua spawns. so I dropped in a hole and baby spotted...now I have like 5 boxes of hisuian zorua eggs in scarlet now

Congratulations on your shiny win! I’ve been in the area that Zorua spawns and never encountered a shiny so I’d say you’re very lucky! ✨ If you have a method that worked for you, please share!

As for the eggs, I’d totally hatch them anyway if I were you. I like to do it passively while watching a movie or listening to an audiobook so it doesn’t feel too boring. Right now I’m hatching for shiny Fuecoco. My shiny Eevee hunt, which I don’t think I’ve posted about yet, was only about 13 eggs so it’s worth it to find out!

Spooky Shining Flutter Mane!

Hi friends! Look at all of those shiny Flutter Mane! Would you like to be the hero of your friend group with a gift of shiny Flutter Mane? Or perhaps you just want a lot of them? Today we’re embarking on a trip to the mysterious Area Zero with the goal of catching a bunch of shiny Flutter Mane!

Before we embark, a few notes of importance. First, you need to attend Naranja Academy for this trick to work. Uva students will need to bribe a friend who goes to Naranja Academy for a shiny Flutter Mane or pick up some classes at Naranja Academy.

Additionally, this trick is what we call an “exploit”. An exploit is a mechanism in a game that does not break any rules of the game or involve cheating but uses tactics that are probably unintentionally possible by the developers. While these Pokémon are legal and legitimate some people may consider the tactic to be “cheating”. As a professor, I would never condone actual cheating but I want my students to understand what they are getting into.

To start, we need to make sure that we go to Area Zero during the day. This trick won’t work at night. I find it best to wait for sunrise. That will give you the most time to hunt. Now we need to make our sandwich before entering area zero. The sandwich recipe I used is:

Any two herba mystica 🌿 except 2 sour and 1 sweet with 1 sour

1 serving of hamburger

1 serving of onion

1 serving of green pepper

2 servings of red onions

This sandwich can be a bit difficult to build but remember to put down your flattest ingredients first and you should be fine. Make sure that you save before prepping your sandwich so that you can just make your sandwich again if you accidentally lose ingredients. I made my sandwich right in front of area zero so that I could get inside really quickly afterward!

Next we need to get to Area 3. To find Flutter Mane we’re going to cycle between areas 3 and 4. To make it easier I port right to Area 3. As soon as you get out you should be seeing the effects of the sandwich.

What are the effects exactly? Well we’re calling Flutter Manes by using the sandwich recipe but Flutter Mane is a ghost type so it can’t spawn during the day. What you get is a very empty cavern! Friends, Area Zero is always weird, but let me tell you it was super weird darting around with no Pokémon showing up!

If you start to feel like you’re questioning your sanity (and I did many, many times) you can push ZL and you should be able to see the Flutter Mane phasing in and out. Don’t hold it down for too long though, it’s distracting you from your main objective of finding a shiny Flutter Mane!

At this point you may be wondering what the point of all of this is if all the Flutter Mane are disappearing. The answer is simple: shiny Flutter Mane are immune to the daylight rule and will just pop up for you to catch!

By my estimates, trainers without a shiny charm should be able to catch at least two shiny Flutter Mane in a span of 30 minutes. Those with a shiny charm should encounter at least 4 in the same amount of time. Personally, I was able to catch 6.

This trick makes it both easier to see the shiny Flutter Mane and also makes them appear with more frequency. You do have to remain diligent and make sure you’re paying attention for the shiny Flutter Mane when they pop in. While they won’t disappear, they can pop up in weird places, like behind crystals.

To optimize your time it’s good to cycle back and forth between the 3rd and 4th station. This should force more Flutter Mane into the area. Travel slowly and be alert!

If you do this at night or run out of daylight, you’ll see a whole bunch of normal Flutter Mane in the cavern and they will not disappear. While you can still hunt like this, you will naturally encounter less shiny Flutter Mane this way.

I love this method because it’s super easy to do and you really don’t need the shiny charm to be effective. Flutter Mane is such a top tier shiny too - everyone should have one!

hi again! I decided to try the masuda method in scarlet for my shiny hisuian zoroua. what do you think is a good amount of eggs to get in total? I been making level 2 egg power sandwiches and set a timer for 30 minuites and every 5 minuites I check the basket cause I found that's roughly how long it takes to get roughly 10 eggs.

Hey! Getting eggs is a little weird by comparison to other games. You’ve got almost the whole process right but you’re missing a key element. The egg power L2 sandwiches are perfect. You should be getting at least an entire box full of eggs but usually I get about 2 (60 eggs). The key is you don’t want to wait for the basket to fill up. Once it fills to 10 the basket won’t hold anymore and the Pokémon will stop producing eggs. If you empty the basket out periodically then the basket won’t have a chance to reach max capacity and you’ll get tons of eggs! 🥚

hey, I'm currently shiny hunting a hisuian zorua for a new team to use when the dlcs arrive. I am using mass and massive mass outbreaks in legends arceus and the masuda method in scarlet and was wondering which one do you think is easier to do? I have the shiny charm in both games and perfected both zorua and zoroark in legends aswell.

Hey! I personally have not had a ton of luck with outbreaks in Legends Arceus. They feel more chaotic to me than the mass outbreaks in Scarlet/Violet. With the shiny charm being in both games, I would say Masuda in Scarlet/Violet will probably be faster and it’s a more controlled environment where you don’t have to worry about saving or potentially missing your target. If you hatch inside a city (especially around the school), you don’t risk influencing the odds of causing other random Pokémon to be shiny. This was the approach I took to hatching my own shiny Hisuian Zorua. ☺️ Best of luck on your hunt! I’d love to see pictures of your success no matter which route you take! ✨

Shiny Eggcelence! - Welcome Shiny Zorua

Once I got my Hisuian Zoroark for preordering the Pokémon DLC I knew I was going to need to shiny hunt Hisuian Zorua. While Hisuian Zorua is a rare beauty on its own, I do love the soft pastel blue hues on a smoky grey coat. Shiny Hisuian Zorua reminds me of a foggy midnight sky. 🌙✨

There are many steps to egg hunting if you want to be particular about it and anyone who’s been following my research for awhile knows that I can never do things the “easy” way. I wanted my shiny Hisuian Zorua in a Moonball. But how?

The first step is to picnic with a male and female Zorua. My original Zoroark was female and being in a Cherish ball would only pass on regular Pokeball eggs. I gave her an everstone so that she would pass on her Hisuian qualities to her offspring. Then, I caught a regular male Zorua in a Moonball (saving first to ensure success) and picnic’ed with them.

Eventually I got a Hisuian Zorua in a Moonball. That was my cue to switch up my picnic partners to this new Hisuian Zorua in a Moonball and a ditto from another region. Yes, now that we have the Pokeball we want, it’s time to use the Masuda method.

This is the easy part supposedly, but historically I haven’t fared very well with the Masuda method (my quest for a shiny Alolan Meowth in Galar took well over a thousand eggs). I promised myself that I would take it easy and not count this time but between you and me it took a LOT of eggs.

I like to hatch eggs inside of Mesagoza to avoid any unintentional shiny encounters that I could miss out on outside. Specifically, I like to run around in circles around the giant mural in the center of the city. Many circles were traced. But then…

Shimin was born! I was very lucky as Shimin had perfect stats even though none of his siblings did. What better way to celebrate a birthday than with a photo shoot?

Shimin seemed a little hesitant to play with the ball. In fact, he seemed a bit lonely so I immediately “hatched up” some plans to get him a shiny friend…

Shiny Successes: It’s Ritza Again!

@itsritza went shiny hunting for Scyther! Scyther can be particularly tricky because it looks very much like it’s original form. The green of its body looks fairly similar to a normal Scyther but slightly darker. The exposed parts of Scyther’a body under its exoskeleton are pink instead of beige which many people find to be more recognizable at a glance. Especially in the ever changing weather in Paldea, slight color variations can be difficult to identify so it’s better to latch on to a strong color difference when you’re hunting in large groups.

Ritza also sent me a picture of her fully evolved Scizor! The beautiful metallic sheen of Scizor’s exoskeleton is really striking! I bet shiny Scizor is a real stand out in raids! There’s no mistaking that beautiful green.

Note that Ritza also used a Quick ball to catch Scyther! This is a very smart choice for capturing shiny Pokémon as the capture rates on the first toss are very high. You can also achieve good catch rates with a repeat ball if you’ve already caught the Pokémon before.

Feeling Green - The Hunt for Noibat

Hello trainers! Wow, there were so many Noibat in this picture! I wasn't expecting to hunt shiny Noibat today but I was in the area looking for some weird stakes in the ground that supposedly lead to cursed Pokémon when I found these guys and couldn't resist! With so many Noibat around, I knew there had to be a shiny among them. And I knew, from previous hunts, that the shiny would be green! I seem to be on a green kick lately so why not?

There were a lot of flying and bug Pokémon around so I tried to think strategically about how I wanted to make my sandwich. Since Noibat is both a flying and dragon type Pokémon, I decided to go with a Dragon type luring sandwich.

We may have already covered this sandwich in a previous hunt but just in case you don't have the recipe - here it is!

Recipe to Attract Dragon Types

1 serving of pickles

1 serving of cucumbers

3 servings of avocado

Any combination of 2 Herba Mystica except Sweet & Sour, Double Sweet, or Double Sour

You can see the sandwich above. I shudder to think of what a sandwich with only pickles, cucumbers, avocado and some seasoning tastes like, but that's why I have all of my interns eat the sandwiches for me.

This hunt was particularly difficult because of the sheer amount of Noibat in the area. I picked the perfect sandwich and ended up attracting way more Noibat than were even in the Outbreak to begin with. Noibat are also curious little creatures who will swoop down to investigate anything that they fixate on, so standing in one spot too long meant an unintended battle with an unfortunate Noibat.

When I finally did find one, it was nearly at the end of the hunt! I thought for certain that with so many Noibat we would find one sooner, and maybe even two - but in the end we were at the final countdown for sandwich effectiveness when I spotted shiny Noibat out of the corner of my eye!

Some part of me still wanted to find an extra because I always share extra shinies with my wife, so I tried really hard to get the Noibat in a premier ball (her personal favorite). As you can see, I struggled here somewhat because premier balls don't have the best catch rate (they are swanky, though)! Persistence pays off though and finally Noibat settled into its new home.

Success! All of that effort paid off! Shiny Noibat is so adorable, I feel like the green really compliments its bright yellow eyes! More pictures to come soon! Are you having fun on your own shiny adventures? Let me know in the comments. Until next time, stay shiny! ✨
