Hello, today is my birthday, and I would like to share a comic I made in the last year with you. It's called Broomistega and Thrinaxodon.

This comic was originally printed with yellow, fluorescent pink, light teal, and violet risograph inks. Physical copies are available in my shop.

Or, how did I get into writing fanfiction.

It was my destiny. Hahaha. I had been training for this since I was 16 and discovered The Theban Band and the huge piles of Lord of the Rings fsnfic that was floating around (this was like, 2003? 2002?? Very long ago, flintstones times).

I read on and off for many years since but never participated in any communities (I was very secretive about it) and then properly jumped into participating in stuff in like...2015 I think?

I started out with art, and then wrote something for an anonymous fest and got a really nice response in which someone I fully idolised read it and came out of fandom retirement to rec it on their blog, and it was the best experience. And then I just kept writing :).

Ahhhh my origin story!!

Basically, many aeons ago, I was at uni and thinking about fic instead of doing the assignment I had due (linguistics report). I impulsively made a LiveJournal so that I could send a message to Birdsofshore to let them know I was obsessed with their writing, because I didn't realise you could send messages on anon (or maybe you couldn't?? I don't know actually, but I do know I didn't have an ao3 account and I really needed to tell Birds they ruled lmao).

I named that account: shittylinguist

Because that is what I was being by bludging my work, and I was planning to delete it anyway as it was a vehicle through which I could send my fan mail.

And then birds convinced me to stick around, and I realised I probably should change that name, and so I went with shiftylinguini because it had a similar rhyme (and it does kind of torment me that linguini is spelled wrong but it was deliberate--the i just looked better than ending on an e.)

New ship, yes!! I'm envious of this, how good is that feeling of "Oh shit, I'm into this, I'm going to find more'", what a rush. I'm really sorry, I don't really know any fics like this - is this an omegaverse thing? It's not really a trope I'm familiar with, I'm afraid, so I haven't read many along those lines.

I've read quite a few werewolf fics - The One You Feed by @sweet-s0rr0w and In the lining of your skin by @maesterchill are recent favourites - but I haven't come across a heavy focus on a/b/o dynamics in this fandom for some reason. Hopefully other people can offer some recs if they see this?

A few I liked that had an omegaverse slant are:

Embers by @shiftylinguini (i remember absolutely loving this one, it features such a fantastic kiss scene)

This Is How by @bixgirl1 (gorgeous, immersive short fic)

in heat by @bonesliketambourines (very fresh and super hot take on the trope)

no but how much audacity and sheer entitlement do you have to have to tell people they need to stop posting their darkfic and porn fic and any other fic you don’t like to ao3 so you can have a safe space when ao3 was literally created as a safe space for writers to post their content without fear of it being randomly wiped out by pro-censorship assholes with an agenda like what has happened to plenty of other fic archives before?

“but a lot of us see ao3 as a safe space to get away from that kind of nasty content” - lol you can see the middle of a busy interstate as a safe space all you want too but that doesn’t mean that you get to walk into the road and scream at all the cars going by that they’re the ones infringing on your safe space either

ao3 is not, has never been, and will never be a site meant for nothing but children’s stories. you can “see it” like that as much as you want but there’s a difference between fiction and reality and that view of what ao3 is like is as fictional as the stories posted on it.
