Ansel Adams
Ansel Adams, a giant in the world of landscape photography, is widely regarded as the greatest in his field. It's intriguing to note that landscape photography has often received less attention in the mainstream art world, primarily due to an institutional bias against what's perceived as "populist art." However, Ansel Adams stands out as an exception, especially among long-deceased black and white photographers. His reputation is built on his iconic black and white landscapes, with a special emphasis on the American West, notably Yosemite National Park. His work has left an indelible mark, influencing countless photographers over the years. One of the remarkable aspects of Ansel Adams' artistry lies in his masterful darkroom processing technique. Despite the seemingly unremarkable quality of his original film negatives, his prints are nothing short of extraordinary. The transformation from the original film to the end print is where Adams' magic truly shines. He dedicated his life to perfecting a select few of his top prints, and it's a fascinating journey to observe the evolution of these prints over time. In encapsulating his artistic philosophy, Ansel Adams' famous quote, "The negative is comparable to the composer's score, and the print to its performance. Each performance differs in subtle ways," is particularly telling. This perspective emphasizes the creative and interpretive process that occurs in the darkroom, highlighting the artistry in his work. Following his passing in 1984, only his former apprentice, Alan Ross, is authorized to produce official Ansel Adams prints, ensuring the preservation and continuation of his photographic legacy.

Zanele Muholi's
Zanele Muholi's striking black-and-white portraits are truly unique and captivating. Their use of strong contrast and focus on individuals adorned with unconventional, sculptural wearables crafted from everyday items is both visually compelling and thought-provoking. Muholi's commitment to self-portraiture and their exploration of Black queer identities through photography is inspiring. Their work is not just for a select few; it's meant to resonate with a wide audience, from teachers to parents to the LGBTQ+ community, encouraging a sense of worthiness and connection. Muholi's portraits, often featuring empowered expressions, beautifully reflect their collaborative approach with their subjects. The inclusion of these photographs in the Dig Where You Stand exhibition, centered around themes of decolonization and restitution, further underscores their importance and relevance.

David Muech.
The words of this photographer are a profound reflection of their deep connection to the natural world and the art of photography. Their desire to capture nature at its most powerful, wildest, and most extreme is evident in their portfolio and the titles they choose for their collections. The concept of the "Timeless Moment" resonates as the heart of photography, where light defines and stops time, and this concept seems to take them into the timeless landscape itself. Their approach of "NATURAL CONNECTIONS/NEAR/FAR" to connect the viewer to the entire landscape is both innovative and engaging, providing a three-dimensional journey through their images. "TOPROCK" illustrates their personal journey and the emotions experienced at the summits of numerous mountains, a testament to their dedication and readiness to capture those fleeting moments of fantastic light. Their fascination with the ancient bristlecone pines and their storytelling is a beautiful testament to the enduring beauty of the natural world. "PLATEAU LIGHT" seems to hold a special place in their heart and soul, and it's evident that their lifelong commitment to this landscape is a driving force in their work. The photographer's contemplations about the evolving landscape and the changes they've witnessed over the years, whether due to natural forces or human impact, offer valuable insights into the profound responsibilities we all share in preserving the beauty of our world. As a photographer with a legacy spanning two centuries, they acknowledge the influences of past masters while continually seeking their unique path in the realm of landscape photography. The transition to digital photography has brought new freedoms and possibilities while maintaining their enduring passion for exploring and interpreting the American landscape. Their work showcases their dedication to preserving the beauty of the American West and beyond, their involvement with national parks, and their belief in the enduring power of photography. Ultimately, their photographs tell the story of their profound connection to the environment, the landscape, and the art of photography itself.
