…and I will love you if you never marry at all, and spend your years wishing you had married me after all. That is how I will love you even as the world goes on its wicked way.

The Last Great Race
The Last Great Race by wincechesters
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 51k
There is a race that takes place every year in Alaska called the Iditarod, a thousand mile journey across the Alaskan wilderness by dog sled team that has come to be known as "The Last Great Race on Earth”. It is a test of endurance, of the relationship between dogs and their people, traversing mountain ranges, frozen rivers, forest and tundra.
When writer Castiel Milton is forced to spend two and a half months in Alaska at Winchester Kennels to cover the race preparations and the Iditarod itself, the only person more dismayed than he is Dean Winchester, one of his hosts. Castiel views his assignment as a punishment and is less than impressed by his surly host, and Dean distrusts the sheltered city-born writer who has invaded their home and their lives. But soon, as the Winchesters prepare for their race and Castiel learns about sled dogs and what a musher’s lifestyle is all about, they forget to hate each other and their relationship evolves into something neither of them expected.
I'm always a fan of seeing people's passions come through in their writing, so of course this fic delighted me. The author packs so much information and passion about the Iditarod race into this fic, and all the details make you feel like you're right there along with Dean and Cas, experiencing all the pitfalls and triumphs of the race. Equally as exciting, however, is watching Dean and Cas' relationship develop.
Originally, Dean and Cas want nothing to do with the other. While acknowledging that the other person is undeniably attractive, they both get off on the wrong foot with each other: Cas is a writer who resents being sent away to Alaska for his assignment, and Dean is a racer who resents having a journalist follow his every move for the next two months. They manage to resolve their differences, however, and Cas slowly starts to fall in love with the scenery, the rush of racing, and... Dean. And Dean starts to realize that maybe having Cas in his house isn't all bad after all.
The author does a great job of balancing the tension of Dean and Cas' relationship with the tension of the race itself. There are ups and downs in both, and during some of the Iditarod scenes, you'll be holding your breath as Dean battles the elements. You'll also feel like you're right alongside Dean and Cas as they race through the wilderness.
This fic does a fantastic job of introducing the reader to an entirely new world, and gives a lot of information while never becoming boring or feeling like info-dumping. It's also a joy to see how Dean and Cas' relationship develops and how they overcome their obstacles to start a new life together. You'll be cheering right along with Cas when the winner of the 42nd Iditarod crosses the finish line!
