The Golden Seed
Once upon a time, there was a lonely farmer who lived on his farm. He had been caring for the farm and all its crops his entire life; however this was no easy job. Every season when the farmer thought his plants have finally become strong and were growing healthily, the devil would visit his farm and suck the life out of all his plants. But, every time the devil did so, the farmer would start to replant again, sowing the seeds and caring for them again. Every time the devil would visit and mock the farmer, questioning why he would replant knowing that destruction was coming again. The farmer’s answer would always be the same, “my God blessed me with this farm, I will keep tending to it for His glory”.
After many seasons that have had the life sucked out of them, after too many visits from the devil, the farmer was feeling defeated. He couldn’t replant as much as he used to and he was close to just destroying the farm himself and letting the land die. One day as he sat in his fields, despondent by how barren they had become, he looked to the sky in awe as something was descending upon his farm. God had sent a woman to him, and in her hand she held a golden seed. Of all the people the farmer had met in life, none were as beautiful as the woman. And out of all of the seeds the farmer had tried to grow on his farm, his eyes had never gazed upon a golden one. God spoke to the farmer and the woman and instructed them “This golden seed I have blessed you with, this seed is called love. If you work together and take good care of this seed, it’ll grow to be the most fruitful tree you will ever see. It will not be an easy journey, but as long as you keep tending to the seed and helping it grow, one day you will see my promise and lay peacefully and happily under the tree together, looking over an abundant farm”.
So, the farmer took the woman as his wife and together they planted the golden seed embarking on their journey together. Two farmers doing all they can to grow the tree God had promised them. Nothing made the farmer and his wife happier than tending to the seed together, and as it would grow, their hearts would fill up and their lives would be filled with joy. This love that God had blessed them with, it was golden. Steadily, they were making progress in growing the seed, it wasn’t easy in the beginning but they were figuring it out, together. Finally finding a system on how they would tend to the seed.
One fateful morning, the devil visited the farm bringing a fierce storm with him. The storm flooded the entire farm, ruining the soil and making it almost impossible for the seed to grow healthily. Devastated, the farmer and his wife wondered if they should even bother to continue tending to the seed, however they kept with their mission. The farmer and his wife would now spend more time apart than they would together, however when they were with each other they gave everything they could to help the seed grow and feel the joy that came with it. Together, they made sure that the seed would grow to be what God told them it would be one day. Seeing this, the devil despised that he hadn’t defeated the farmer and his wife and destroyed the seed yet, he hated how happy they were caring for the seed despite how difficult it was, and decided to make the job as hard as possible for them. Every so often, the devil would visit the farm and trample over the plant that had grown from the seed, setting the farmer and his wife back and ruining their progress, making them start from the beginning over and over again. This took a toll on the farmer and his wife, the farmer noticed how much it was taking out of her and decided he would do extra to make sure the seed was being cared for, knowing that his wife wasn’t able to care for the seed as much as he could. The farmer hated seeing what the devil was doing to the seed and to his wife, it pained him knowing how much his wife was struggling and knew that his wife would be better if she didn’t have to care for the seed and escape the attacks from the devil. But together, the farmer and his wife continued to do all they could to grow the seed, with hope in their hearts to see the tree God had promised them.
And then one day, it had become too much to bare. The wife could not withstand the attacks from the devil anymore, it was hard for her to have hope for the tree when the plant kept getting damaged and their progress would continually be lost. She wanted to continue on the journey with the farmer, they both loved growing the seed so much and both wanting nothing more than the fruitful tree one day. The farmer had always tried his best to motivate his wife to keep going, to not give up and to not leave the farm, to keep hope in her heart and continue caring for the seed. On this day it had become far too painful for the wife to continue, and she decided to leave the farm. The farmer had always hated what the devil was doing to his wife, so despite wanting to keep her on the farm, despite wanting to motivate her to keep caring for the seed with him, he no longer wanted to see his wife in pain, so he accepted defeat and watched as she left the farm.
Devastated, the farmer laid down face in the dirt on his field and just stayed there, lifeless and finally accepting defeat and giving up on the farm entirely. He did not want to keep trying, he no longer wanted a farm and no longer wanted to be a farmer. Before the day his wife and the golden seed had arrived on his farm he was ready to give up farming, and when she had left, the only thing that made sense to him would be to give up and destroy the farm. Every day as he lay defeated with his face in the dirt, the sun would rise and he would cry and beg it to bring his wife back to the farm and to provide sunshine to help the seed grow again. And when the moon visited at night he would curse it like a mad man for bringing the darkness that the devil dwelled in, taking his wife away and constantly hurting the seed. Every sunrise and moonrise he would do the same, crying as he begged and cursed. The devil would visit and mock the farmer and laugh, there was nothing left on the farm for him to destroy and he had believed he had finally defeated the farmer.
One day after laying in the dirt for so long the farmer had finally gained just enough energy to lift his head. To his shock, despite everything else on his farm having died, the golden seed had sprouted a tiny stem and leaf. The farmer hadn’t realised that the tears he had poured out from his heart every day and every night had provided just enough water to keep the seed alive. He sprung up from the dirt and started to care for his farm again, cleaning up where he could and replanting wherever he was able to. He laughed in the devil’s face and exclaimed “My God blessed me with a golden seed, a golden seed that has kept my farm alive!”. The devil angrily stomped on the seed, created fierce storms and floods in order to destroy the farm and the seed once and for all, and in the midst of the storm the farmer danced in his fields, vowing to never be defeated by the devil again. The devil couldn’t understand why no destruction had fallen upon the seed this time and the farmer answered him with a conviction bestowed upon him by God,
“you can destroy everything on my farm, but my God blessed me with a golden seed. as long as this golden seed is in my soil and is watered my God says it can never die. that’s what’s so special about the golden seed, as long as you care about it, it will live forever, and therefore my farm will live forever, no matter what you do I have found a love that will never die”
With this revelation, the farmer sort out to care for his farm again. He had found new purpose in farming, and despite still being broken from the devil’s attacks, he got up everyday to tend to his farm, and to water the golden seed. He would pray every day, thanking God for his farm and thanking God for his wife and the golden seed she brought to the farm with her. He would pray that his wife was well and that God would always be with her throughout all her days, protecting her and taking away any of her pain. He would pray and pray and pray, because through prayer, the devil stopped visiting the farm because he realised no matter what, he couldn’t kill the golden seed, the farm and it were now protected by the farmer’s prayers.
Tonight, as the sun and the moon eclipse each other, the farmer looked towards the sky. He was still crying however he no longer begged the sun or cursed the moon. On this night as they were eclipsing each other, he had a message to give the sun and moon:
“Sun, when you rise every morning, give my wife joy. Give her hope for every new day and enlighten all of days. Break through every dark cloud, and bring life to her. Every morning when you rise, you watch over and protect her throughout the day.
Moon, when you rise every night, give my wife peace. Bring her peace and comfort so that any hardships she may have faced throughout the day, she will be able to rest her head on her pillow without them weighing on her head and heart. As she sleeps every night, watch over her and use your moonlight to suck out all of her pain, remove it all so that when she wakes in the morning she does not feel heavy, and can receive the new sunlight without any darkness blocking it.
Sun and Moon, you watch over her in all her days. Every day and every night tell her that everything is going to be okay, that she is going to be okay. Tell her that I’m making sure the golden seed never dies. Tell her that no matter where she may find herself, no matter what she is going through, no matter how she is feeling, remind her that she will always be deeply loved. That love will never die and will always be hers to keep.
Use your sunlight and moonlight every day to make her feel loved at all times. And tell her that if one day she decides to return to the farm, she knows where to find it, and I’ll be there ready to grow that fruitful tree. The golden seed will always be alive and ready to grow.”
The farmer thanked the Sun and Moon for accepting the request to watch over his wife every day. He gazed upon the golden seed in the ground, and with a bittersweet smile he raised his eyes to the sky to tell God:
“Thank you Lord. Thank you. For even if my wife never returns to the farm, I will always have the golden seed you blessed us with.“
