it's always so alarming looking at the notes on posts about people's cool experiences with ttrpgs and seeing the sheer number of people saying something along the lines "unfortunately this relies on the assumption that the players aren't huge shithead assholes who are actively trying to fuck each other over and make sure their gm has a bad time."
like. yeah, it sure does. that's kind of a baseline assumption for me, the same way that when I invite friends to a potluck I feel perfectly safe assuming that no one is going to spit in the food. do you guys actually like the people you're doing recreational activities with? blink if you need help.

Hey does anyone have that painting of the Argonath but they’re dabbing? I don’t need it for anything but I do want to inflict it on all my followers again.

in general if you believe that your job is to definitively describe, capture, taxonomise, or exhaustively define reality you are going to have a bad time imo. it's far more useful to ask "which model is useful for my purposes," "does this model basically make sense with what I know of the world," "might another model be more useful for another purpose," &c.
the best map is the territory--but describing everything about the material and social conditions of each individual person on earth, besides being impossible, would be useless. in order to be useful--to describe something about the part of reality that you're interested in, to have the power to make predictions or have insights about that reality, to propose actions in order to alter that reality--you are going to have to generalise. any time you propose to reduce reality to a model you are compromising and generalising something, somewhere. the question is where do you generalise, and how much, and what do you gain from doing so, and what do you lose, and in which contexts is this model useful (i.e. how should you constrain the field in which you apply this model), and in which contexts is it more trouble than it's worth?

Resting IS productive. You never need to worry about not being productive enough when you're resting, because allowing yourself to heal and grow IS productivity.

I applaud the writers at Paizo for what they've done for Shivaska as of Starfinder. Here I was, the fool, poo-pooing the Demon Lord for using child slaves in her horrible clockwork castle out of a sheer, petty need to be EEEeeevil... I was blind to what she was truly doing, what she was truly embodying! I didn't spot the thread, not until the Starfinder writers had taken it and crafted a wondrous tapestry from what began as an obscure Demon Lord.
Shivaska isn't JUST the boogeyman, stealing away children to work in her factory. This is her first step taken towards what her true passion is: Unethical workplace practices. In Pathfinder, she's not entirely in tune with what she could be, what her true potential is, but as of Starfinder, she's fallen fully into her niche (the book even says it took her a while to realize what she could be doing with her power and her time). It began with dangerous child labor, and it (currently) ends with multi-level marketing scams, illegal animal testing, invasive ads, and even cryptocurrency schemes, all wrapped up in 12 hour workdays, company script, and union busting... filtered through the lens of a power-hungry Demon Lord, so all of her corporate malfeasance is even worse and more exploitative than anything we have here, to the degree it becomes almost darkly comedic.
She's literally using mortal souls to power her crypto mining rigs, for god's sake!
I'm impressed and a little giddy at what the writers have done. In just a few books, Shivaska has gone from total obscurity to potentially being the most powerful Demon Lord in the Starfinder setting, at least for the moment! I'm probably also buzzing from how delightful Mechageddon! actually turned out to be. After the... lukewarm ending of Tyrant's Grasp, I'm happy that at least the Starfinder Enjoyers know the grand finale for 1st edition is actually grand!

Translation: "I do the thing"
So I've been learning French for a while and 'faire' is actually an incredible word. Like what a fucking breakthrough in economy of language.
Faire is a verb that is usually translated into English as "to do/to make," but it covers way more actions than that, which is very confusing for new speakers. because (I have realized) that's not really what faire means.
Faire is actually a word that just gestures vaguely in the direction of the object of the sentence and goes "you know." "Je fais du velo." "Je fais du courses." "Je fais mes valises." I'm biking. I go grocery shopping. I'm packing my bags. You're just sort of pointing at a bike and going "you know, the obvious thing you'd do with it."
English: "You mean RIDE it??"
French: "Sure whatever."
Like idk I just really enjoy the concept of a catch-all verb that you can just slap onto almost anything because who fucking gives a shit, you get the idea. There's a bike. what do you think I'm going to do with it.
