Octane and Seer: Narrative Foils

So, with today’s video from the Apex twitter account, plus some other lore pieces such as the loading screen where Seer’s parents write back to his school headmaster to tell them that they will be transferring him out of the school–”If you expected us to say sorry, that we would tell Obi to be less sensitive, less beautiful, or less courageous, you will be sorely disappointed”–it’s become pretty obvious his parents have been extremely supportive of him, his ‘curse’, and the way he expresses himself.

While Seer is not the first character with loving parents who are also both alive/in their life (re: Bangalore, Gibraltar, Rampart?, Fuse) his are most prominent in his story. A couple of other characters also have an important parent/parent(s) in their story, but today I’m going to focus on who I believe to be Seer’s narrative foil: Octane.

I think they���re two really interesting characters with an interesting dynamic beyond ‘haha they don’t like each other’. I believe them to be foils of each other; similar in some ways, but with striking differences.

For one: they’ve both got a lot of showmanship, with fans that are important to them. Seer obviously prides himself on being an icon for outcasts, and in Pathfinder’s Quest, Lifeline tells Pathfinder that Octane’s fans are very important to him (“he cared–and still cares–a lot about his fans”). 

They’re both from well-off families, participated in Gauntlets/Arenas/underground competitions, and pursued the Games because they both saw them as the next, natural step to what they care about–Octane for adrenaline, Seer for performance.

Now, onto their differences:

Seer’s parents were loving and supportive of who he was. The way they raised and encouraged him to be who he was led to him joining the Arenas, and eventually, the Games. Every time someone suggested that he change, they politely told that person to go fuck themselves and moved Obi to an environment where he would be allowed to prosper and develop to be authentically himself.

Octane’s parents were neglectful and abusive. His behavior initially started as a ploy to get the attention of his father (or so it is heavily implied) until he eventually realized that the attention he gets is second to the rush of adrenaline he feels. His father tried to force him into the role of heir, before giving up on this entirely and leaving Octavio alone–not because he wanted him to grow into who he truly was, but because he simply did not care.

Both Octane and Seer have similar roots, with key differences being the way their parents raised them that ultimately influenced who they are as a person. I think this is a really fascinating set-up for them to be foils to one another and have interesting interactions. In a way, they already do. Their voice lines this season communicate that they have negative opinions of one another, for whatever reason. 

I hope they expand upon this and bring up more ways that they are similar or different, or that the narrative at least acknowledges this :3

I actually believe very strongly that Octavio has a half sibling. Something tells me that if Octavio WASN'T an accident, Eduardo might have had the foresight to have a "back up" heir at the ready.

wraith and octane have a sibling relationship idgaf what u say. they werent close at first but over many many many seasons now they get along like brother and sister. they dont fully understand each other but they care a lot ab each other.
