Social Norms of the Gotei 13

The independence of each division of the Gotei 13 is a mirror for the independence of each individual soldier. I was thinking about this after reading  @mascaron-drive ‘s excellent post here about Kyōraku and Ukitake and a recent ask I received about Nanao helping at the 13th Division after Kaien’s death.

What are the norms of behavior for a captain toward his soldiers? Is Ukitake really oddly indifferent to the fate of his soldiers? After considering it, I don’t believe Ukitake is oddly indifferent; I believe his behavior is the appropriate and normal behavior of a captain of the Gotei 13. It’s Kyōraku’s behavior toward Nanao that is out of the ordinary.

Ukitake and the Social Norms of the Gotei 13

I believe each soldier of the Gotei 13 is expected to develop independence as a warrior and increase their strength under the supervision—but not necessarily the protection—of their captain. Relying on your captain or another soldier to protect you would be unusual and inappropriate in the Gotei 13.

Let’s look at a few examples. Prior to the fight that takes Kaien’s life, Ukitake takes Kaien and Rukia out to the location where the Hollow who killed Kaien’s wife is hiding. He lets Kaien engage the Hollow alone and stops Rukia from interfering, even when Kaien’s sword breaks. He explains this to Rukia this way:

Ukitake and Pride

Ukitake is letting Kaien stand on his own as a soldier of the Gotei 13. That’s to be expected for a captain. The particular distinction Ukitake makes between a fight for pride and a fight for life is something personal to him, though.

Kyōraku doesn’t seem to give a damn about pride in a fight—his stance is that from the time a war starts, both sides are evil, so it’s hard to see how pride would enter into it for him. He impaled Stark from inside a shadow while Stark was distracted fighting other people; fairness, and so pride, don’t seem to have weight for him in a fight.

But they may have more weight for Ukitake than anyone else. As a man with a chronic illness, he’s probably suffered a lot of indignities in his life. Pride in battle and fairness in battle may mean more to him because he does need more help and he’s probably had to give up some pride due to his illness.

Ukitake’s officers are probably more independent and capable of tasks above their station than officers in other divisions, because he’s frequently ill and they need to cover that extra work. Kaien mentions something like this when Rukia joins the 13th.

Ukitake can come off as a soft man, but I don’t think he’s particularly soft as an officer of the Gotei 13. He treats his soldiers kindly, but he expects them to be capable of defending themselves and fighting for Soul Society. This is what every captain expects from their soldiers, and Ukitake expects no less. This is why he lets Kaien fight, and why he lets Rukia go to Hueco Mundo. This is the social norm of the Gotei 13.

I think Ukitake definitely has the ruthlessness required of a captain. As one of the older captains, he’s probably lived through harder duty than any of the younger ones. Here’s a panel from the Kaien fight:

Kaien is his friend and his vice captain, and Ukitake’s going to cut him in half to spare him the indignity of being possessed by a Hollow. He’s calm—Rukia is losing her mind at this point, but Ukitake stays cool. This is what it takes to be a captain.

Renji on Social Norms for Soldiers

Back to the social norms for the Gotei 13: Renji explains this to Ichigo during the Hueco Mundo arc when Ichigo objects to splitting up because he’s afraid for Rukia.

So Ukitake’s behavior actually fits right in with what’s expected of a soldier in the Gotei 13.

When Kira falls in battle during the invasion of the Quincy, does Rose drop everything and run to him, or freak out? No. He stays in the fight and keeps a cool head. That’s what’s expected of a captain.

Kyōraku and Social Norms of the Gotei 13

Let’s talk about Kyōraku and the social norms of the Gotei 13 for a while, through the lenses of his relationships with other shinigami.

Kyōraku and Lisa

With Renji’s comment in mind, it’s apparent that Kyōraku’s behavior toward Nanao is inappropriate and unusual for a captain. I used to believe that Kyōraku’s over-protectiveness toward Nanao was a result of guilt over losing Lisa in TBTP. After the recent chapters with Kyōraku and Nanao, I no longer believe this.

For one thing, we don’t see any protectiveness toward Lisa from Kyōraku during Fake Karakura Town. She comes to him, and kicks him in the face, and he smiles. Then she says something that echos what he said when he sent her on that mission, about her strength:

Look at Kyōraku’s reaction. He doesn’t beg her to stay, or to let him protect her; he doesn’t even look alarmed. Instead he says that she looks well and watches her go to fight. This is the expected behavior of a Gotei 13 captain toward a soldier going to battle.

If Kyōraku was traumatized by losing Lisa to the point he wouldn’t let his current vice captain take the battlefield, it doesn’t show here when he actually meets with Lisa again. They’re fighting a very dangerous set of enemies. All of them have a good chance of dying. Does he mention this risk? Does he even tell her to be careful? No.

So I don’t believe losing Lisa made Kyōraku overly protective of Nanao. He’s lost soldiers before Lisa; there’s no way he hasn’t, not in hundreds of years as a member of the Gotei 13. Lisa is someone important to him, but he doesn’t react protectively when he’s faced with her and a dangerous situation.

Kyōraku and Nanao

Instead, I believe Nanao is unique for Kyōraku—she’s someone that he can’t bear to lose, even though he knows his behavior violates the social norms of the captain and soldier relationship. Think about it: if it were Lisa, or Okikiba, or Enjōji, or any other officer, would he try to hold them back from the battlefield or protect them on the field inappropriately? No. (And Lisa, and probably the others, too, would never accept such treatment from him, either.)

In the recent arc, we have this page of Kyōraku, after Nanao has gone to fight Lille without him:

He’s asking for her forgiveness for coming to her on the battlefield, and asking her to let him protect her. Kyōraku knows it’s inappropriate and unusual behavior for a captain to protect his vice captain this way.

He knows.

But he can’t take the loss of Nanao, and that’s why he’s asking her to let him protect her, against all the social norms of the Gotei 13. For Ukitake, something like this would be trampling on his officer’s pride as a shinigami; for many officers, Kyōraku’s behavior would undoubtedly be an insult. A captain is meant to watch their soldiers grow and take pride in their strength.

But Kyōraku can’t let Nanao go to battle alone, because he can’t bear to lose her. Their relationship is beyond that of a captain and his vice captain—far beyond that:

Their relationship isn’t constrained by the social norms of the Gotei 13 for captains and vice captains, because they’ve stepped into another realm entirely. Kyōraku needs to protect her so much that he drags his severely wounded body out of the shadows to go to her, and he promises he will always be right behind her, protecting and supporting her. She accepts this from him, something that would be impossible if their relationship was truly an appropriate captain and vice captain relationship.

Kyōraku and Ukitake

The uniqueness of Kyōraku’s relationship with Nanao is illustrated by an earlier moment in the war. There’s a scene with Ukitake earlier, when he and Kyōraku discuss the Kamikake:

They’re discussing the connection Ukitake has with the Soul King, and they both know that if Ukitake has to unleash Mimihagi, he will die. But Kyōraku doesn’t tell him not to use it, or get sentimental—he’s acting as the captain commander here.

Beyond that, Ukitake would be insulted if Kyōraku treated him as anything other than a soldier of the Gotei 13, prepared to give up his life to protect Soul Society and the Living World. I doubt Kyōraku told him to prepare for the possibility of bringing out Mimihagi—Ukitake would have done that on his own, without needing to be ordered.

Their friendship is strong, but it still holds to the social norms for soldiers of the Gotei 13, especially given the high value Ukitake places on pride as a soldier. He wants to die as a captain protecting Soul Society. Being treated as anything less than a soldier by Kyōraku here would be completely unacceptable to him.

After examining these pages, I think Ukitake is totally in line with the normal behaviors of captains and soldiers in the Gotei 13. For the most part, Kyōraku is, too.

But Kyōraku and Nanao’s relationship is singular, both in the Gotei 13 and to Kyōraku. He needs to protect her, because he can’t bear to lose her, and she will allow him to protect her, because she loves him and wants to protect him, too. Protection is not only about saving someone’s body—it can be about saving someone’s heart, too.
