Buried Treasure
Summary: Himeko has a question for Allen.
I had this idea shortly after I wrote "About Allen" but only got around to writing it now. Did sorta think about drawing this as a comic at some point, but I kinda liked how this turned out so :')
Relationships: (Platonic!) Himeko and Allen
Word Count: 815

Allen liked hanging around with Miss Himeko. There was a nice warmth that came with being around her presence, perhaps because the two had bonded so quickly over their love of maintenance and tinkering with relics. It became a thing the two could do together — so much so that Allen would sometimes accompany Himeko for train maintenance — something that Himeko seemed to only ever do alone. A bigger machine and a greater fun puzzle to solve, Allen noted.
The two were sitting in the main car, tools in hand. Himeko, proper as she was, sat upon one of the benches, working on one of her equipment over the table so as not to stain the cloth of the bench and annoy the conductor. Allen, on the other hand, was cozy on the floor, cleaning up and polishing Himeko’s other equipment.
It was usually quiet between the two, Allen and Himeko content with just working alongside each other, but this time, Himeko had spoken up against that comforting silence.
“You know, I don’t think we talked about how you came to enjoy relic hunting and maintenance.” Himeko continued to work on her tool.
Allen tilted her head back, nearly resting on the bench behind her, to look at Himeko. She hummed in thought. The topic of conversation never really crossed her mind either. She didn’t think it was super important.
“So where’d you learn how to fix things from, Allen?” Allen could hear Himeko’s hands stop tinkering with her equipment, all focused on Allen instead.
“My mentor,” Allen returned to polishing the equipment in her hands, “From a long, long time ago.”
Then it was Himeko’s turn to hum in thought, “Can I ask what happened to your mentor?”
They remember that day as nothing more than a red blur….and they left it like so.
“I, uh…I don’t really remember,” Allen frowned, shaking her head slightly. “It was a long while back, but… she taught me everything I know. And she’s the reason why I love relic hunting so much.” And allowing themself a moment of peace at the memories, she found it in herself to smile, sighing softly, “She…was the best.”
She felt bad, but it wasn’t like she was lying to Himeko, either. When she tried to remember what happened that day in Rivet Town, her memories seemed to all become a blur. It was like being one step away from meeting someone — arriving just a little too late to catch them. The air of that memory sat in her mind — beyond whatever doorway in their headspace — but she just couldn’t walk through it. If she did, maybe she would have been able to tell Himeko; she would have been fine telling her.
What she did remember of her mentor — she treasured the most.
She remembered the first day that her mentor took her relic hunting — how even the smallest treasure with the littlest value became a shining star in the grays of her mentor’s eyes.
She remembered how her mentor shone brilliantly as she worked herself into a sweat recreating old and broken relics until she was satisfied that it would be a near or exact replica of what it once was.
She remembered that first memory when she came back into Rivet Town, hoping to sell the things she had found, only to run into the new Tempering Workshop. And how quickly the person who would soon be known to her as her mentor opened her arms to Allen — that Allen could make a place for herself in this workshop.
The warmth of the forgery felt so strong that day when she saw that treasured smile.
Yes, these memories… She may not remember much, but Allen treasured the ones she remembered the most.
“She must have meant a lot to you,” Himeko noted.
Allen smiled before looking up at Himeko, “Actually, you remind me of her a lot, Himeko!”
“Oh yeah?” Himeko’s golden eyes widened before chuckling, “Coming from you, I’d consider it a compliment.”
“It is!” Allen twisted herself to face Himeko, excitedly nodding, “Like, the best sort of compliment, really!”
“Well, I’m honored, then,” Himeko smiled back, “Thank you, Allen.”
“I should thank you for letting me stay here. And well, for being here.” Allen returned quietly — softer than her usual clamor.
“The Astral Express is open to anyone who wants to come aboard,” Himeko insisted, “If there’s anyone you should thank, it should be Dan Heng, who had requested for you to come aboard.”
“I know,” Allen smiled at the sound of her best friend’s name, sitting herself back to her original sitting position and beginning to polish Himeko’s equipment again, “I tell him that all the time.”
And just like that, the two return to silence with nothing but the clinking of metals that would sometimes speak for them: the comforts of a familiar presence.
