Going "Home"
Going "Home"
Our first reaction was joy. Ryan and I have been waiting for 3 months to figure out where we were going to be sent next. After putting in our preferences and praying we get one of our choices, we were thrilled that we were going to our number one choice. After 3 years of living in a tiny 1,300 person village in Germany, we were going to be moving to Boston. Not just Boston Metropolitan Area but…

The Farewell Tour
Tumblr media
Our last few months in Germany were supposed to be fantastic. Instead, like everyone else, COVID screwed up all that we had planned for Spring 2020. Nonetheless, after 90 days at home, a personal record, we were able to sneak in a few last trips to close out our time in Germany! They were full of face masks, hand sanitizer, and they didn’t cross the borders of Germany, but they got as close as…

Quaran-Tour
Tumblr media
** I actually wrote this in April and subsequently got distracted by everything happening in the world. But my love for my little village deserves a post of its own, even 2 months late!
We were supposed to be on a beach in Spain. Instead, I’m doing what we have been doing for the last 56 days – sitting on my balcony in a tiny village in Germany. Now, I know in the grand scheme of things, I…

There are some experiences that you can never quite capture in pictures or words. At risk of sounding cheesy, there is nothing I could write that would quite convey the sense of friendship, the personal achievement, or the difficulty of climbing the tallest free-standing mountain in the world with 20 complete strangers, much less doing so when the entire world is going mad while you are…

After three weekends at home (a record, I think) Ryan got me just what I wanted for Valentine’s Day – tickets for a 9:30 pm flight to Belgrade, Serbia. We arrived a little before midnight and, after a quick trip through customs, we hopped in the back of the waiting hotel car and were whisked away into the night on the way to Hotel Moskva. The things we learned about the city started with the car…

Hopped off the plane at RIX
Hopped off the plane at RIX

Our days are numbered over here and we feel it more and more with each passing weekend. Our third to last three day trip was spent back in the Baltics, this time in Riga, Latvia.
We took an out-of-character late night flight, leaving Frankfurt at 9:30 pm and landing in Riga a little past midnight with the one hour time difference. We met our transfer at the airport and were quickly checking in…

The Pearl of the Alps
The Pearl of the Alps
I have to be honest, I almost didn’t write this up. Chatting with Ryan over breakfast yesterday, I asked if I should write about “just another ski weekend” but we both decided that trips to Switzerland, which are only a short-ish drive away now, are soon going to be much fewer and far between (at least for a while) and the trip was worth remembering in 20 years so here we are.
Our trip…

Happy New Year (and new decade) friends! I’m sure you’ve seen a million and one ten year updates and I guess I didn’t want to miss out on the party. As Ryan and I ring in the New Year, our last in Europe (for now at least), I joined the ranks of people thinking back over the last year and last decade.
I’ve always been a fan of countdowns, milestones, and reflection. The New Year has always…

It took three holiday seasons for me to finally celebrate a Christmas on this side of the Atlantic. We have been dreaming of taking a Nordic trip since before we moved here, when we saw a picture of the snow-covered Christmas trees on Instagram three years ago, and with our time running out, we finally made it a reality. After a Monday work day, we were off for a week of planes, trains, and…

It's the holiday season
It's the holiday season
Ryan and I decided to celebrate our last holiday season in Europe by exploring the best that the region has to offer. We’re still not sure what kind of Christmas season we’ll have next year so we packed December with all that we could.
Christmas season started as soon as Thanksgiving was done in the Monette/Dau household. Good timing worked out for us and Ryan and I were able to visit his…

The Last Thanksgiving (Abroad)
The Last Thanksgiving (Abroad)

In the third and final installment of “Thanksgivings Abroad” we took our longest road trip to date. Leaving Tuesday morning after some early morning meetings, we loaded up the car to head south. Ryan selflessly agreed to drive so I could work for the duration of the relatively uneventful trip that took us 7 hours through France and Switzerland and finally into Italy. We enjoyed the snow capped…

Ryan and I have been in Europe for almost 2 and a half years now and thought we had this 3-day-weekend deal down to a T. The universe decided to throw us a bit of a curve ball with Romania.
This trip requires a little background. Buying the tickets (as almost always) was based on perfect flight times from our tiny regional airport for the right price (read: very cheap). After booking tickets…

Lochs and Glens
Just back from an amazing 5 days in Scotland and we're already to go back for more golf, seafood, and scotch!
Tumblr media
We’ve been planning this trip back to one of our favorite places since April so it was with great anticipation that we headed down to Luxembourg for our flight to Edinburgh. After dropping off Ryan’s golf clubs, we boarded the quick 1.5 hour flight and were quickly disembarking in Scotland.
The sun was already going down as we made our way to the car rental place but Ryan had a bit of sunlight…

International Harvesters
Tumblr media
This weekend, Ryan and I took our shortest ever trip. After a five minute walk, Ryan and I were at Weingut Goswin Kranz, an organic winery in our small village. After two years of chickening out, we had finally got out the nerve to reach out to a winery owner and sign up to help pick grapes during the harvest.
We had met Sven during one of our town’s wine festivals. In May, the town opened…

Holiday in the sun
Holiday in the sun
In a rare beach vacation, Ryan and I took advantage of a short flight for the long weekend to go to Pula, Croatia to get some sun before the fall really sets in up north. In true RyanAir fashion, we bought some $50 round trip tickets and took off late Sunday night for Istria, the region in northern Croatia.
We stayed in Horizont Golden Rocks Resort. By the time we arrived Sunday night, the sun…
