Harvey: I was entering some thing on the computer at work today, and was putting in the order code for some medications, which is 4040. For some reason the 0 key doesn't work this well, so I punched it in wrong, and the screen flashed up "Item Not Found: 404".

Harvey: And I wheezed so loud that Maru throught I got hurt.

19. Movie night with the gang

Dear Mr. Gunther,

Thank you for letting us use the library after hours for pizza and movie night. The kids were thrilled! Ms. Marnie was kind enough to donate a pizza, and Jas and Vincent loved watching Junimo Story for the first time.

Dear Ms. Marnie,

Thank you for the pizza, and for letting Jas come to movie night. She’d been looking forward to this night for so long! I told the kids that once we finish our Nature of the Ferngill Republic unit and they get As on their reports about it, they’d get to have this movie night.

Jas wrote an excellent report about the animals in Cindersap Forest. Her attention to detail is wonderful and her writing is above grade level. I especially loved her paragraph about the squirrels and how they hibernate in the winter.

Thank you for letting Vincent come to movie night at the library. He definitely earned this reward! I told the kids that once we finish our Nature of the Ferngill Republic unit and they get As on their reports about it, they’d get to have this movie night.

Vincent wrote a great report about beach wildlife, and included excellent drawings of crabs and seagulls. I was impressed with the research that he did about the seagulls’ nesting habits.

18. The Stardew Valley Fair

“Yo, wanna make a grange display?” Sam played a guitar riff.

“Wait, what?” Sebastian asked. Sitting behind the keyboard in Sam’s room, he took a drink of his water.

“What would we put in it?” Abigail asked.

“CDs, merch...and us! We could play a few sets during the fair! It would be a cool way to get our music out to tourists.”

“That might be cool!” Abigail said. “We still have a ton of t-shirts left over from the show in Zuzu City.”

“You really think the mayor would let us do live music?” Sebastian asked dryly.

“Oh, we wouldn’t tell him about that part, just the merch table.” Sam shrugged.

“But he’ll see us setting up speakers and drums and stuff.” Sebastian crossed his arms.

“Yeah, on the day of,” Sam said, “when it’ll be harder for him to ask us to leave. We’ll already have one foot in the door!”

“Good point,” Abigail said. “And it’s not like we’d have to have the amps up to stadium volume or anything, we could keep the noise level reasonable.”

“Yeah, but what’s the fun in that?” Sam laughed.

“We have a higher chance of being allowed to stay at the fair.” Sebastian gave Sam a pointed look. “One of us will have to send in a proposal to the mayor.”

“Can you do it?” Sam asked.

“Nope. I have a huge deadline coming up the day of the fair, I don’t have the time to take away from my work. Sorry.”

Abigail piped up. “I’ve done proposals for my dad’s store before. I can send you a template, Sam.”

“Okay, rad!” Sam played another riff. “We can bring copies of the full album and the EP, shirts, stickers, and lanyards. We’re gonna need some kind of a set list, too.”

“You’re An Autumn Wind,” Sebastian said. “That one’s my favorite.”

“Dragon Fire, definitely,” Abigail said.

“How about Every Tomorrow?” Sam asked.

So began a long night of planning and jamming, resulting in the loudest and most fun grange display that the Stardew Valley Fair had ever experienced.

16. When the Farmer Needs Saving

It happened so fast.

Flying Serpent.

I swung.

Missed.

It collided with me, that’s the last thing I remember.

“Easy now, take it slow.”

I heard a voice. Dr. Harvey? Slowly opening my eyes, I saw a part of the Clinic I’d never been in before.

“I had to perform an emergency surgery on you.”

No wonder I’m so woozy. I closed my eyes again. My arm hurt. My chest hurt. My entire right side hurt.

“You broke your collarbone and your shoulder. You’ll need to keep that right arm immobilized for four weeks.”

“WHAT.” I tried to sit upright. I pushed myself up with my left arm, but slid back down into bed. Those drugs were strong. “Harvey. It is fall. If I don’t ship a ton of produce this season, I don’t survive the winter. I need my arms.”

I felt sick.

The next day, I swallowed my pride and walked over to Pierre’s bulletin board. It had taken me hours to write the bulletin left-handed, and it looked terrible: HELP WANTED - MICHELE NEEDS HELP ON FARM. PLANTING AND HARVESTING. YOU WILL BE PAID. MICHELE WILL BE GRATEFUL.

I hoped someone would be able to both read my left-handed scrawl, and want to help. I didn’t have to hope for long. While I was in Pierre’s store, Kent approached me.

“Excuse me, Farmer. I hear you’re looking for some help? What happened to your arm?”

“Hi, Kent, thanks. My shoulder is broken. I can’t harvest or till. I’m looking for some help, I’d give whoever helped a cut of my profits and some of the crops as well. I’m buying cranberries now.”

“I’d be interested. Are you thinking of buying any yams? Jodi would love ‘em. They keep forever and they’re healthy.”

“Of course.”

So began a long and strange fall, with Michele’s hired hand Kent doing most of the farm work, Vincent tagging along to help once in a while, and a surprisingly bountiful harvest. Kent walked away with half the profits, which was a lottery-style windfall for his family, and Michele was able to survive the winter and heal up.

15. A Favorite Beverage

“It’s more than the coffee, Maru.”

Maru took a drink of her own coffee, glad for that. The stuff from Harvey’s coffee maker was okay, but not worth the delight he always showed when he drank it.

“Have you ever been to therapy?” He asked.

She thought back. “Family therapy with Mom and Dad and Sebastian when we were kids.”

“Did you learn about grounding? Happy places? Biofeedback? Mindfulness?”

“Not really. It was all about communication and conflict resolution.”

“Okay.” Harvey took a drink of his coffee and smiled. “That makes a lot of sense for a family, actually. You’re a great communicator. I went to therapy during residency, and my therapist and I realized that I needed a ritual that had nothing to do with work or learning or medicine at all. We came up with some time in the morning to read the paper--this is when there were newspapers and the news usually wasn’t terrible--and drink my coffee. I always found it very relaxing, and learned to associate the taste of coffee with that relaxed flow state of reading my newspaper at my favorite time of the day.”

“That’s really cool. I need something like that, a cup of coffee during a relaxing part of the day.”

“You’ll have to be intentional about building it into your schedule and making it something you know will always relax you,” Harvey said. “I wouldn’t suggest reading the news anymore. Maybe a cup of tea and a good book?”

“Coffee and work on my robotics project?”

“See, that may not work. The project may frustrate you, and it will be done eventually. What part of the day relaxes you the most now?” Harvey asked.

“The walk to work. I’m feeling good, I have energy, I’m noticing all the things around me, the weather is usually good and if it’s not I’m bundled up.”

“Alright, what’s a drink or scent or accessory that you can associate with that walk to bring back that feeling whenever you need it?”

Maru shook her half-full travel mug at Harvey.

“Then who knows? Drink coffee on every walk to work, and you may end up loving coffee like I do.”
