Ok. Ok so like, i like to collect alien plushies, i am picky as hell about them, there are specific ones that i want. Not the point of this post. The plushie that started all of this is the bumbumz alien plushie, the 7.5" i named mine beepy i love it immensely it started my journey of loving alien plushies, now i have the palm pals alien and the ikea alien i love them.
Beepy speficially i have always loved the feel of, the stuffing/beads are perfect i live the texture of the fabric bumbumz uses, i love how squishy it is, the whole nine yards there is nothing out of a stuffed animal i want more than whatever bumbumz has been making their plushies with HOWEVER. Outside of their alien plushy (which i still need the 4.5" version and the 12" if they ever make one) i dont have a lot of interest in their other characters. Theyre just not my deal, i mean theres a handful i like the aesthetic of but generally just not my cup of tea.
The point to this was that bumbumz is still coming up with more designs, theyve only got like a couple different series out and i hope immensly that they come out with bug plushies... they have a garden pack they have the bee and the snail and theyre wonderful but i would die for a beetle that has the same squish and softness as beepy... like god they could do no better.

Tldr: long rambling about self fertilizing hermaphroditic reproduction systems, translated roughly onto sapient rodent-esque egg-layers. (Featuring social and physical repercussions, birth control, and slugs) see last paragraph for my questions
As im working on piddlies im also working on revamping their reproductive systems. From the start ive wanted some specific traits and so far ive gotten the systems to work but i do have a couple questions im stumped on.
First of all i wanted them to be:
Unisex with hermaphrodite traits
Egg layers
Now by giving them a system with ovotestis, a uterus, and both a penis and a vaginal tract i was able to figure out how they would lay eggs themself, and mate with a partner. From there im trying to figure out if self fertilization was voluntary or not.
From my research on hermaphroditic species of slugs that sometimes self fertilize (wikipedia and google, mostly), ive found that they self fertilize when there arent any potential partners around, and otherwise it tends to depend on weather and such environmental factors.
Wiki articles make it sound like they do something that triggers self fertilizing to occur, or if a certain time passes it just happens, but i couldnt find anything that explains how it actually works? Im not sure if i just dont know how to properly google it or if its not something people of researched yet, but it leaves me with an option of if i want it to be voluntary or not.
Piddlies are sapient and treat their kids and loved ones much like humans, they put a lot of attention and energy into one or two children at a time based on their relationships, social standing, and general economic status.
If self fertilization happened involuntary based on a regular cycle, then not only do i think it would impact that social trait with a piddly's relationship with reproduction, but also it would impact how gestation and reproduction would work generally. From this brings the idea of reusing my old odea that self fertilization would be triggered by flowers called babys blossom, but instead used like birth control, to negate the creation of eggs, and though it is a cool idea i think the social impact is too great to justify it.
On the other hand, if self fertilization was voluntary, if have to figure out how that works, physically. I could use the flower again, but it seems unlikley that a flower would trigger a biological event like that. Sure, it makes sense with pokemon, but i want to keep this more scifi than fantasy.
To finish this off, it anyone knows if real self fertilization is voluntary or not thay would be cool to know, as well as a more in depth look at how that works, but otherwise a better idea for how to trigger it would be cool too.
