Copyright In Film
When producing a film it is important that you are aware that if you intend to include another creators work whether its a song or a clip from a film you need to get permission from the creator and distributor to get the rights to use it in your production and you are likely going to have to pay. When you are making your own content, it is ok to take inspiration from another piece of work, as long as you are not directly copying or adapting it. According to the 1988 copyright, designs and patent act the copyright will continue 70 years after the creator dies however if it is a cable/tv show it is 50 years.

Interrelationship of the Film Industry and Wider Creative Sector.
The creative industry is used to entertain or to inform an audience, and each different sector is similar and can be used to to help another. You may be a writer who is looking to produce an animated film, so to do that you would need to find someone who is skilled in animation, a costume designer is used to provide costumes for the cast. Britain is a great creative country as we have world class facilities such as Pinewood Studios, Aardman Animations, and media companies such as BBC and Channel 4 to get your work seen. The creative sector is a sector that despite having many different sub sectors, all work together at some point, the music industry is really quite different to the film industry in the sense that it is performed on stage and involves the star touring to perform their art, whereas a film is distributed digitally but of course every film needs a soundtrack so this is where the film crew would have to negotiate with the musician to obtain the rights to use their material.
The creative industry has companies that are involved with film, TV, radio, gaming, promotional and corporate content, post production, special effects and photo imaging.

Current Knowledge and Skills In The Industry.
In the three years that i have been studying film and TV i have gained valuable experience. I have gained an appreciation for filmmaking as an art and all the work that goes into even the smallest production. I feel confident in operating a camera and boom mic as well as other equipment. I would like to start creating my own productions and collaborating with friends who are also trying to get into the industry, so to do that i need to be more confident in reaching out and doing what i can to get involved with different things. The tutoring through the academy has been great and really worthwile and has taught me a lot about different aspects of filmmaking, from having directors come in and talk to us, to being on set myself and having the hands on work experience of the long hard days.
Tumblr media
My own personal skills are my calm and collectiveness, it is a good trait to have when working long days and especially as i want to have a directorial role in the industry and work with the talent. I also have good vision and creativity which i can use to put together a great shot list and storyboard to capture the perfect shot for whichever scene or scenario. One weakness i would say i have is that i am not the most technical with equipment, but i will be buying equipment in the near future so i will learn to look after and operate my own equipment soon enough.
I have also become more analytical with film and am at a stage where i now discuss the details of film such as how camera angles are used and how lighting and sound can be used to change the tone of a scene. It is good to be knowledgable in film theory as it can influence your own style of work and can help you learn.

Film Etiquette and Health and Safety
A very important aspect of the film industry is time management, you have to be on time because you have a whole crew relying on you and the role that you have, so to let down a team would be disastrous. The team will not want to work with you again so it would damage your reputation. We learned this with sessions with did with producer Rachel Robey who taught us about the production process of film with etiquette being majorly important. Health and safety is a mandatory pre production process as well which was also touched upon by Rachel and learned practically during sessions. Checks have to be made on every set to make sure that the location and the props are safe. Also make sure there are no hazards when filming such as cables and wires.

Short Film Reviews
“The Present”
The present is an animated short film, we are introduced to what appears to be a typical young boy glued to his games console, his mother comes home and has gotten a gift for a the boy, the boy finally decides to pause his game and open his gift, he finds out the gift is a dog and seems to be happy about it, that is until he realises the dog has one leg and then he appears to shun the dog because of this. After seeing the dog struggle however he seems to have a change of heart and decides to take it out to play where it is then revealed that the boy himself only has one leg.
Its a hard hitting film as the ending was totally unexpected, the audience is made to feel like the boy doesn’t like the dog because it has a leg missing when really it was because he felt patronised by his mother getting him a dog with one leg.
“Identitity”
Identity shows us a woman who is in a bathroom and puts on a mask. The school/college environment as well as the mask immediately gives the impression that it is challenging the stereotypical student social groups and the mask represents the false identitiy that is portrayed when young people are in these environments. The conclusion happens when the woman runs into the bathroom which then goes back to the start of the film but this time the woman takes off her mask and gives a look of relief.

First Assistant Director
The role of First Assistant Director is being the right hand man of the director, it’s about taking responsibility for numerous important practicalities so that the director is free to concentrate on the creative process. The assistant director has an important pre production role as well, they are the ones who break the script down into a shot by shot storyboard working with the director to determine the order of the shoot and how long each scene will take to film. The role also includes drawing up the shooting schedule to organise the shoot and make sure that everything is on time.
What personality traits should you have if you want to be a First Assistant Director? Well for one, you have to be authorative and able to communicate well with a team and you also need to have leadership ability, because after all you are who the crew will look to if not the director. You have to be calm because the role involves dealing with problems and crisis situations, and you will often have to work long, unsocial hours and that leads to another key trait. you need to be an approchable team player, after all you are a key person on set and its their job to make sure the project gets finished. It is also the job of the 1st AD to carry out health and safety checks and weather checks, so it is a role that carries a lot of responsiblity.

Making A BFI Short Film
After a great session of pitching ideas which was fun, we had some funny ideas, we had some dramatic ideas, and we had some ambitious ideas but ultimately we were left with 3 of the pitched ideas and would all work on these three. The three films chosen were Cat, Baby, and Cheapskate, three different scripts but three good scripts. I was chosen as assistant director where i would work on Baby and since then have made some great friends and gained valuable experience from working on the set and being tutored by Adam. Being the assistant director i worked with the actors and made sure they knew what they were doing, helping them with their characters and the script and generally making sure the actors were satisfied, i also worked with Nina the producer to make sure we were on schedule. Things went well over the two day period and we got some really good footage, the ony downside was that there was a lack of organisation but really that’s just down to our lack of experience and mainly conflicting ideas between the crew.
That was a big part of the pre production, we were all throwing ideas around and it was really uplifting to be surrounded by people who are similarly creative and passionate about being on the course and having the opportunity to work on a film. Now we wait for the film to be edited and i can’t wait to see how everybodies films turn out and the day of the screening.

La Vie En Rose review
La vie en rose is an award winning biography about the life and career of famous French singer Edith Piaf and is surely Marion Cotillard’s best on screen performance having won her an Oscar, a golden globe, and a BAFTA for best actress in a leading role.
The film follows the life of Edith Piaf as she grows up in a brothel in Paris, to busking on the streets with her Dad. Edith’s life is shown in a non-linear style which keeps you wanting to watch to see how and why she became the person she became, from being taken to live with her grandmother who is a Madame in a brothel, to being in the circus with her war surviving father. The one thing that stands out about the film is the incredible acting from the cast, especially Marion Cotillards performance. She showed the pain and suffering that Edith went through to newer audiences that may have never heard of her, but also the brilliance and the dedication she had.
The film does a great job of telling a detailed story of Edith’s life from her childhood, being a teenager drinking in the street with her best friend Momone (Sylvie Testud) and up until her final years as a short tempered and frail woman. The one thing I feel the film was missing was her relationship with a younger man who she married in real life, he just sort of came in during the end with no real story or explanation other than it’s her new husband. It would have given more detail to the final years of Edith’s life but instead we just have to accept that it’s her new husband and watch the final part of the film which is great nonetheless and wraps up the film well with an emotional scene where she is confused and recalling old memories.

I Daniel Blake Review
Most of the time you watch a film you know that what you are watching is fiction, or at least a dramatization of an actual event, but this film was different. But Dave Johns (Daniel) performance as an ageing carpenter recovering from a heart attack made it feel like we were watching a true story and ultimately we are. The benefits system in this country is flawed and is now mostly done online and over the phone which will be extremely difficult and distressing for people like Daniel who have had to have time off work because of genuine medical conditions. And with the stereotype of people on benefits being lazy and addicted to drugs and alcohol, Daniel opens the audience up to the reality that it isn’t always the case, and so does the co-star Katie (Hayley Squires). Daniel meets single mother Katie at the job centre where she has been sanctioned for being late having recently moved to the area from London, after seeing her making a scene and trying to explain herself, Daniel decides to speak up and complain to the staff leading to the two being removed from the job centre. From there they start a friendship in which Daniel helps her move in to her new apartment and also develops a bond with her daughter Daisy.
The two both go through the struggle of being on the benefits system, Daniel’s problem is that he can’t work because the doctors have told him he can’t due to his heart attack, but despite this Daniel can’t get any money for this he instead has to go on jobseekers allowance where he has to apply for jobs and attend CV classes even though he isn’t fit to work. Katie is also struggling, she relies on Daniel to help her with her apartment and begins to shoplift. She meets a security guard at a shop she steals from and he tells her he can help her out and we of course know what he means. Katie begins working as an escort to get money whilst David is waiting to appeal his sanction. After all the struggle between the two main characters, the ending comes down to whether or not David will be able to appeal his sanction and get to claim his money, the ending doesn’t come as a surprise but it doesn’t downplay the film at all, the film was more a statement by socialist director Ken Loach and he certainty delivered a statement, and a powerful statement that has brought about discussions and debates about the benefits system.
