Sato calling Yoshida ‘cute and manly’ was one of the Best Things™ of Volume 9,,, I still haven’t recovered from it.

Aitsu no Daihonmei: A Review
My favorite thing about this manga is the things it doesn’t do.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent a lot of time looking for a good yaoi manga. I’m a lesbian myself, but personally wouldn’t care whether or not there was sex in the relationship - what I was looking for was a healthy, enjoyable male homosexual couple that could give me the same warm fuzzies my favorite het and yuri manga could.
I was… sadly disappointed. Actually, a more accurate way to say it is that I was horrified.
First off, there were the uke/seme tropes. Now I understand why they exist, and can enjoy them under certain circumstances. They’re there so the target demographic of teenage girls can more easily slip into a fantasy when there’s one character in the gay relationship who acts more ‘girly’ and another who acts more 'manly.’ However, these roles become very troubling when taken too far, with the uke being a doormat who lets the seme treat them like shit. It’s especially bad when the seme never gets called out on it (and sometimes what they did is sexual assault/domestic abuse!) or does something nice to make up for it and is completely forgiven. There’s lots of other problems with these tropes that I don’t have time to go into now.
Hand in hand with this issue are the consent issues. There are so many! Just because both participants are male does not mean it’s okay! RAPE IS NOT ROMANTIC. Don’t believe me that this sort of stuff is rife in the community? Please direct your eyes to Junjou Romantica, Honoo no Suna, and Finder. ESPECIALLY Finder. There’s about twenty more examples of this stuff I can think up off the top of my head, mostly because all but two of the twenty yaoi manga I read had non consensual sex on some level in the first few chapters. And I thought Fifty Shades of Grey was terrible…
However, this manga was like a cool breeze! It did somewhat have the uke/seme tropes, but in a refreshing way. First of all, there’s the fact that our uke, while adorable in my eyes, is not traditionally attractive in any way. Then there’s our seme, who’s kinda a sadistic, manipulative bastard but has an interesting backstory and sharp mind. And speaking of backstory, reasons are actually given for why the characters are the way they are! Glorious!
Yoshida (“uke”), is much more interesting than most bland cookie cutter protagonists. He stands up for himself and others, feels guilty when he’s hurt someone else, will actually talk about his feelings (thus cutting out a lot of stupid miscommunication tropes), calls Satou on his bullcrap, and *gasp* isn’t perfect! I also heaved a sigh of relief that he wasn’t ridiculously dependent or needy and jealous, despite the flocks of girls constantly all over his love interest.
Satou (“seme”), is probably my second favorite thing about this manga. I don’t want to give spoilers, so just believe me when I say he’s multilayered with an interesting (if absurd in places) backstory. He comes off to all the girls at school as a nice but aloof guy, but Yoshida can see that his smiles are faked and his conversation insincere. Satou is used to getting what he wants, and what he wants (for reasons actually explained!) is Yoshida.
Despite how the last sentence may have sounded, they do have a balanced relationship in the later chapters, with both parties contributing. In the beginning of the manga, it’s more in the fantasy-fulfilling realm (not that that’s necessarily a bad thing), with the popular guy relentlessly pursuing the social outcast in secret, but in the later chapters, it evens out into a realistic, adorable relationship. Sometimes, Yoshida catches Satou off guard, and it’s the most adorable thing ever~! (Inner fangirl has surfaced!)
But the most important thing about their relationship can be brought down to this: they respect one another in a healthy way. Despite Satou’s “sadistic” traits, if Yoshida told him to stop doing things (by which I mean the sex), HE WOULD STOP. And Yoshida, while initially unsure of Satou’s motives, gradually grows to care for him as person. And yes, it is gradual, the building of their relationship, and it is beautiful.
So aside from not doing things I hate, what does this manga have going for it? Well, I did already mention the main leads and their relationship, but there are some very nice side characters who get a good amount of focus. Also, this is a romantic COMEDY, so here at the end of the review I will mention that yes, there are some uproariously funny moments. Not quite Ouran levels, but up there.
But, if typical manga high school stuff, like a lack of plot and unbelievable shit going down will bother you, you may want to let this one pass you by.
Still, in conclusion, it’s well worth the read if you want a good time reading a relationship between two boys.
