Romantic Illustration
Tumblr media
This is an updated graphic that I made in 1994 for my sister's and brother's weddings. Their wedding dates were back to back, and in different locations, but they met halfway and we had a big shebang to celebrate. To fix the original invitation (see below), I decided to use Photoshop instead of Illustrator (although I could easily see working this up as a vector). As I redrew / recolored all the components of the invitation (the flowers, hearts, wedding dress, tuxedo), I also decided to make the giraffes' bodies thinner and lengthened their legs. The original wedding invitation (Names and address marked out for privacy reasons). This wedding invitation could be tweaked to have different colors, different animals - perhaps a wedding invitation with dogs or cats or monkeys! Or it could be used for different occasions (think engagement announcement or romantic get away card, or a unique Valentines Day card, etc.). Copyright © 2020 Sarah Gilbert Fox Read the full article

If You Listen to One Song
Tumblr media
First - a cat. Hopefully Max's tongue will catch your attention long enough for you to listen to the song below. In Excelsis Deo by There Will Be Fireworks https://youtu.be/_RcM-eHtjJw Well I can't wait for ChristmasBeen buckle-knee'd and listlessAnd you say that you've been wishing weeks awayThey hung the lights out in the streetTwisted round the boughs of treesThe choir sung its holiest refrainsLike Gloria Hosanna in the highest Heaven knowsThis years been black and blue. But we're all rightAnd this Christmas could be white for me and you. I still can't sleep on Christmas Eve. And we'll never miss a beatScarlet-faced from whiskey neat in the coldSinging dancing in the darkOh I hope these words will doI've had my doubts but not about youI'm drunk and hearing voices in car parksAnd this year Oh I've got love in me I swear I hope you know Gloria In Excelsis Deo If I should fall from graceIf I should leave this dear green placeAnd if Christmas fades without a traceI still want you aroundThere's magic in this grey old town you knowYou should share in the refrainIf you think you know the songsWho cares if all the words are wrongWho cares if it barely ever snows Still the choirs swellsThe carol of the bells goes.... Painting: Postcard from Harlem
Tumblr media
Why I named this painting: Postcard from Harlem I spent my summers as a kid on the steamy streets of New York City. Dive-bombing the unsuspecting below with seltzer water from our 6th-floor apartment. Eating what was then considered exotic Chinese food, daring my dad to try the sea cucumber. Grabbing slices of pizza from Sal and Carmine (still offering the best pizza in NYC) and eating them off a paper plate while I stood on the Broadway curb. After that, I'd head over to Columbus Avenue to knock off a couple chocolate Italian ices, before heading back to some side street of West End Avenue to join the neighborhood kids (mostly Puerto Rican) who were trying to cool off by jumping in and out of water blasting out from a fire hydrant. Painting: Postcard - Orpheus on the B Train
Tumblr media
This is a story about how I named this painting: Postcard – Orpheus on the B Train As a kid, I loved taking the NYC subway. I still love it. But back in the day, it was magical. Except for this one trip with my Dad, when the train pulled up to the station and he disembarked - and I didn’t. Just as the doors had opened, a girl around my age (maybe 7) looked at me strangely, then deliberately turned her ice cream cone upside down and smashed it on top of my arm. I was too shocked to move and the doors shut with Dad trying frantically to get back in. There wasn’t anything to fear, I thought, right? Wrong.... https://sarahgilbertfox.com/postcard-orpheus-on-the-b-train/ #abstractartmarkmaking #contemporaryabstractexpressionism #originalpostcardart #finecontemporaryart #iconicabstractart #howtonameart #howtonameapainting #originalartcurators #originalartcurators #newfineartcurators #newfineartcollectors #colorwayart #interiordesignart #peinturecontemporaine #pitturamoderna #paintingduringthepandemic #fineabstractart #artforfilm #hotelart Read the full article

Painting: Giraffes in the Bird Garden
Tumblr media
This was one of those paintings that I kept painting over and over. It started out as an abstract. Then I painted over the abstract and added two giraffes that looked as if they belonged in a child's nursery - not exactly the look I was going for. Frustrated, I started scratching off some of the paint (the opposite of mark making - mark unmaking?), then painted over the original giraffes and scratched around some more. The next day I came back and added different giraffes and big bold black strokes on the left side just because I had no idea what else to do. Then I left it thinking I'd come back and paint over the whole shebang one more time. But I didn't. It hung in my studio for a while until I realized it was exactly what it was meant to be. Now, my favorite part of this painting is the story that comes next.  I always listen to music when I paint. And one of the musicians on my favorite playlist is Larry Pattis. I'd friended Larry on Facebook one day (and completely fell in love with him and his wife, Karla - as much as I was in love with his music!). And one day he asked to buy this painting. One day I hope to meet Larry and Karla face to face. Until then, I'm just chuffed as heck that they have my painting hanging in their house. And that I have his music in my playlist to listen to whenever I paint. Read the full article

Painting: Postcard from Riverside Park 10025
Tumblr media
I moved to N.Y.C. during the heart of the heart of the first wave of the 2020 Pandemic. Great timing, right? My husband had three or four months of work to do in D.C. before he could join us (us, being the cats and me). After the first week of translating cat talk, I went to Riverside Park to at least watch other people speak to each other! I could only catch snippets. A man was talking to his dog, "Buster, there's your favorite tree. Go on." (Of course, he was in the same position as I was - talking to a four-legged.) Someone who looked as if they might be homeless was telling a woman who looked as if she might be very rich, "You'd better put your mask on, woman," to which she took another drag off her cigarette and ignored him. There were a lot of kids running and playing, and an almost-teenager following what looked to be his nanny, crying, "I was winning. You didn't have to pull me away. I was winning." He didn't look as if he'd been winning. At one point, a couple of sparrows landed in front of two sparrow-sized women who were talking about an "old blue car" and "yes, it had those plastic bubble wraps on the seats so we couldn't get food on the upholstery" and "absolutely no air conditioner, God, I melted" to" those sure were the good times, screaming out the back window, 'Yahoo, Mountain Dew, It's Good!'" Being from the south, and having been cooped up so long in my apartment, it was music hearing another southerner talk. Copyright © 2020 Sarah Gilbert Fox Read the full article

Jungle Theme Wall Mural
This is a wall mural I painted for my sister.
We come from very creative parents and she wanted my animals in a jungle theme on her kitchen wall (of all places - you'd expect this to be a nursery or playroom mural). She called it her Safari Mural. Painting: Postcard from the Lilac Garden
Painting: Postcard from the Lilac Garden
Copyright © 2020 Sarah Gilbert Fox   March and April were frightening this year. Where every other March and April merely brought, at worst, heavy rains – 2020 brought the pandemic. With the ambulances going around the clock, most days found me inside, hugging a cat (since I was keeping my two and my kid’s cat and her roommates’ 2 cats – there were five from which to choose). Every once in a…

Sky from a NYC Rooftop
Original Contemporary Modern Abstract Art with Mark Making by NYC artist Sarah Fox
Copyright © 2020 Sarah Gilbert Fox   My beloved first husband was a well-known writer named William Price Fox. I just called him Bill. Whenever we visited NY, our first stop was always the White Horse Tavern (a celebrated bar for many of NY’s most famous writers – built in 1880). Bill died in 2015 and my world shattered. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to remarry another remarkable man,… https://sarahgilbertfox.com/3016-2
