An archaeological site is a place in which evidence of past activity is preserved (either prehistoric, historic or contemporary). In cities like Cairo, plenty of archaeological sites lay unnoticed sending ambiguous signs to those willing to turn around and listen attentively. Paying attention might help us communicate with the spot through our collective memory, looking within it for little indicatives to guide us through the process of deconstructing the place. Analyzing its history and impact of the people who passed by it.
The workshop is an attempt to achieve a clear view of a place, taking into consideration all its elements, be it reflections, shadows, voices and sounds, or people that associated with the place, a complete grasp of the place and its context. We then attempt to deconstruct and rebuild the elements, tracing the authentic elements and creating parallel landmarks with the ability to draw attention to or recall certain aspects relating the history of the place to its reality now.

9.5 on Luther's squale
St François Church, Lausanne
The nave of Saint-François' church in Lausanne is often used for the dialogue between theology and contemporary art. This year it hosts a monumental installation of burnt wood and glass by artist Sandrine Pelletier. Her work evokes the Reformation in the 16th century and the shock wave it created.
22.06 — 31.10.2017
Churches around the world are gearing up to celebrate the 500 year anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation. On October 31, 1517, a German monk called Martin Luther nailed 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. This precipitated the reform of medieval Christianity, which changed the world forever. We are all impacted by Luther, who has been called “the last medieval man and the first modern one.”

Who Fears The Others, 2017
Mirrors (250 x 100 cm)
Sandrine Pelletier´s work is rooted in material: its language, possibilities and limits. Who Fears The Other is a sculpture made of mirrors of varying sizes that have been treated with acid. Here, mirrors serve as both base material and medium. The work’s title comes from a poem printed in Two Rows by the Sea, a tract published by the Bible Society of Egypt (a Coptic Christian group) following the circulation of an internet video showing the execution of 21 Egyptian Christians by ISIS in Libya on 12 February 2015. The idea of image is thus central. ISIS has created an internet iconography that consecrates its barbarous acts in order to recruit new members. In a reflection of our century, the group does not lurk in the shadows but communicates openly on social media. With her permanently disfigured mirrors, Pelletier questions not only the viewer’s relationship to self but to society. Who fears the other, knowing that the latter is a product of the former?
