when robots and androids and other machine characters do ordinary human things that we tend to take for granted, like wear clothes, or have a bed even though they don't require sleep, or light up a cigarette and put it to their lips even though they don't have breath to smoke with or the necessary internal organs and functions to process nicotine, there's something about that that calls to me. something about the way their attempts to emulate the human experience bring them as close as they can get, but ultimately end up emphasizing their inhumanity.

fun fact, the reason otherkin are called “otherkin” is because originally there were online communities, waaayy back in the 90′s, of people who identified as elves.  when people emerged who identified as other things the elfkin called them “otherkin” bc they weren’t elves

I think the biggest problem the therian community has is people's lack of knowledge about their theriotypes. Reposting of "cute" content of wild animals (foxes, caracals, and servals are the biggest offenders but coyotes, owls, capybaras, martens/weasels, big cats, and otters are also frequent) in pet situations, or dangerous interactions with people, frequently while bashing reputable facilities like zoos, is a rampant problem that drives me bonkers. These sorts of things do real, tangible harm to wild animals. Every "cute" pet panther or pet fox video is normalizing keeping these animals as pets where they don't thrive or benefit- or worse, encouraging someone to go out and buy one.
I don't expect everyone to know everything about their theriotypes, that's unreasonable, but I do expect that people will do even the tiniest little bit of research into their the animals they're so connected with. Or at least do a tiny little bit of critical thinking when they see a pet wild animal on the internet and go "Hey, does this situation do any good for this animal, or is it just for someone's entertainment? Is it safe for the people and the animals?" or "Hey, how did they get their hands on this animal in the first place? It sure didn't come from their local pet store." or maybe even "Hey, is this person providing everything this animal needs to live a happy, healthy life? Can they provide everything this animal needs?"
In short: Learn at least a little about your theriotypes, please. This issue should not be so pervasive in a community of people that claims to be so connected to animals.

horse otherkin affirmations
I will wash my hair with mane and tail shampoo
I will ignore my stylist screaming at me about this
My legs are long and powerful and if I break one I will be destroyed
I don't mind people riding me around like a fucking car
I will do basically any stupid trick for a sugar cube or an apple
I will kick my enemies in the body or head and kill them
I will kick my friends in the body or head and kill them

Not having the little things that make me feel more like myself is... Weird.
I've been thinking about my ears. My ears should be rabbit ones, not human ones.
Having a hairy body only somewhat helps with me missing my fur, a velvety plush, soft coat.
There's just a lot that's missing, and while I accept that I may never get to replace any of it... There will always be a cloud of incongruence, overhead at all times.

Thinking about Dollightful's BJD bunny.
I'm not dollkin, or dollhearted. But I want to be a tiny BJD bunny sometimes. I wonder about the lives of dolls - are they aware they are dolls? (I know Toy Story exists, Ive watched every movie! I want more like it.)

Transspecies and Otherkin are different things. Otherkin, the typical definition, is overall defined as a subculture of folk who identify either partially or entirely as nonhuman in some way, shape or form. Its sometimes used as an umbrella term, but is also its own thing.
Transspecies is generally correct in that those of us who identify as it feel a sort of disconnect with our bodies and would like to modify it to be more how we see ourselves.
Otherkin have been around before radqueers co-opted some community language. Notably, while radqueers are a very recent phenomena as far as I am aware (As far as I can see, it started in mid/late 2022?) , the first recorded use of 'transspecies' comes from 1999 , coming from this archive.
It is also generally true that Otherkin often are seen as cringe or weird by less understanding crowds, but Otherkin at least dates back to the 1960s, although the word wasn't actually, well, a word we had until the 1990s. Generally we're seen as another weird or bizarre subculture.
heyy. im new on tumblr and i accidentaly stumbled upon the radqueer tag and yknow. had an Experience looking at that. yikes.
but i wanted to ask, whats the deal with otherkin? they are different from radqueers right? they seem cool to me. do ppl hate them for any other reason then "weird and cringe"?
sorry if this isnt the right place to ask i just wanna make sure i dont accidentaly support bad/abusive/that sort of stuff
Just a disclaimer: I'm not Otherkin, and so if I get anything wrong or anyone who is Otherkin wants to add on, please do so. Otherkin (sometimes known as transspecies) is where you feel the need to transition in some way to be a different species. For example, someone who is otherkin may desire to have a tail or may want cat eyes, and some people may want to be another species completely.
The other term for otherkin, transspecies, has been somewhat adopted by the radqueer community, where they insist anyone who is transspecies is radqueer, which is untrue. The otherkin community has existed way before radqueers and doesn't harm anyone.
To answer your question about why people dislike them, I don't think I'd be qualified to actually answer it, but I will say that I think a lot of the reason they are disliked by other people is, like you said, because they're seen as "cringy" or "weird."
