Beginning to Develop Ideas Further and Becoming Team Rep
Today we began with developing our scale model further. Something we came to realize is that there is a big unknown on how the layout will appear on the night due to a range of factors. Lisa came up with the concept of using hexagonal tabletops instead of a long rectangular bench. This allows for the rotation and manipulation of the space meaning we aren’t locked into having a particular structure to our space. Having an adaptable space is important, each table will have a small locking mechanism under three of the sides to ensure that they don’t shift.

During this class, I was also nominated to become our group rep. The responsibility of this position is to feedback our group’s progress to the rest of the class.

Table and Chairs Prototyping
For the table and chairs system within the bar, we created miniature scale models. Firstly, for the table tops, we laser cut an MDF piece which we then engraved a series of chemical structures involved in the process of making beer. Within this tabletop, we cut out a series of circles. Within these circles, we placed a series of domes, these were colored in the same manner as a lot of the microscopic beer images we had found early in the project. We are planning to illuminate these from beneath. The tables are being supported by a series of miniature kegs.

Meeting with Rachael from Punky Brewster and Khye from FESTA
Another meeting took place in Christchurch the day after the meeting with Khye and Jess from FESTA. This time the meeting was with Rachael from Punky Brewster, we had a deep and extensive discussion about the event. Here are some notes and photos from that discussion:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wind, use dowel to stop the frost cloth swaying
Could kegs be used, with a light and transparent
Make sure the coverings on three pylons are remove able
LED strip potentially underneath to illuminate feet
Reflective car vinyl
Tell structural engineer about kegs
Let Rachael know how many kegs we need
Cable ties
Use textures wrapped around the kegs
MDF for table tops
Print table tops for Rachel, could have microscopic details. Rachael w
Unity, maybe layout represents or appears similar to structure of micro organisms
Speakers could be hidden inside under table tops to create minature atmospheres unique to each table. Same could be said for lighting, maybe each table projects a different light hue, unique to each table

Meeting with Khye and Jess from FESTA
During the interval of semester 2, I organized a meeting with both Khye and Jess from FESTA. During the meeting a lot of information was gained a stronger connection was formed between our work and FESTA. Here are the notes that I took during the meeting, however, these were further elaborated upon and further developed on a post on the FEASTA2018 class Facebook Page:
Fire Safety is a concern,
What happens during the beginning of the festival during daylight? does it rely on projection this won’t work in the light. Consider daytime user experience
Projector in relationship to people walking through
Using printing and lighting
New Site 601 Columbo Street, we might be moved here.
We need to somehow show what area of is licensed for liquor consumption
The whole layout for the festival might change, make sure the design is adaptable
Try to get things built pre-fabricated
The amount of power we will need on site
Talk with Rachael - From Punky Brewester
Talk about whether we want to create a bar structure or be supplied one
Make soundtrack, potentially the sound of making beer.
Copyright, could potentially be an issue.
The bar might sit outside of the structure depending on what
Have a good flow through space, clear way around the space entrance/exit.
Document and site analysis
Suspended objects need to be securely fastened in case people decided to swing on something
Tripping on things
Electrical equipment  close to fabric should be monitored
Fire test equipment
Maybe limit the fabric to hip height
Maybe use velcro strips so the whole structure doesn’t come down if someone pulls on it.
Keep an eye on the crowd,
How can we manipulate the crowd, visually and functionally
Infrastructure that is already on site? can it be used.
Unlikely to be able to stick things into the ground
How can modify pallets to be unique and designed to match the aesthetic for bar of the future.
Talk to food students on micro-imaging of food in Palmerston North.
Khye Also Mentioned Wind in an email she sent to me as something to consider

Second Group Concept
With this second group concept, we focused on beer, food, and structure within our space design. We designed a quadrant type area, dividing the different beer and food flavors into different zones/ colors. From the outside, a fairly constrained entrance is present, however, each quadrant expands into a fully fledged dedicated bar environment for that particular drink flavor.

Group Concept
Today we modelled toward a concept for FESTA 2018.
We created a tunnel type structure in relation to taking the drink and food out of the glass/plate. We experimented with a range of materials, both transparent and standard. We picture both light, sound, and the smell will all serve as generators for creating a really intense ‘drink out of the glass’ type experience.

Initial Concept and Idea Generating
After meeting up with my FESTA 2018 group for a discussion, I came home with a few ideas on how we could approach the event. My main consideration was that lighting was to be a major part of the event due to its time of the day. One focal point we are looking at is the future of food. Currently, there are some talks happening on a collaboration with a couple of different craft beer companies to create a dystopian beverage, with its own brand and identity.
Below, I considered how a dystopian food market stall could look. The colored corner pieces are a range of neon lights which will illuminate different the tiers of the shelves, these will serve as a display for the sorts of meals you could acquire, being lit up in a bright and futuristic manner.
The central sculptural piece will also be illuminated, although, at this stage there are many ways as to how this could be accomplished, from embedded neon lighting, to distance lights which are projected onto the surface.
The slanted shelves themselves are where the products would be located, perhaps, a dystopian ice cream, which is also illuminated in a range of different bright lighting could be used.

FESTA 2018: Discussion
We had a class discussion with the one of the organizational team for FESTA 2018. Here are some notes that are gathered from this meeting.
We will probably have one theme but a preferred future and a probable future, this could create some contrast.
FESTA Goals:
Make the city alive at night! Positive experience in a crowd of people
Connect through food
A sense of hospitality and welcome
Feed the connection to this place, encourage people to connect with the city
A sense of creative intervention
Architecture and design to support human activity
We aim for 5% of people to feel that cities are co-created, a feeling that since we have actively contributed to make the city a better place
Food for other species, food for the birds? food for the plants?
These plants are here to support bees, for example, this encourages people to plant these things to feed other species
We are looking at the future of food, utopian or dystopian?
It is a huge topic, some of the other groups which are focusing on this are looking into showing what a carbon neutral diet would look like. Human nutritional needs are found by tablet or injection, this what another group is looking into.
A bar of the future, FESTA 2018? similar to a dystopian bar from Blade Runner
Proteins as bar snacks alongside beer?
Possibly two class projects for FEASTA/FESTA
