This is basically just rephrasing itwoodbeprefect’s post but like. the reason Starsky/Hutch is hilarious is that Starsky is so absolutely deeply incredibly in love with Hutch and he KNOWS it but he’s also like ‘but it’s not gay because it’s Hutch. I’m not in love with Hutch because he’s a man I’m in love with a man because he’s Hutch and therefore it isn’t gay. But if I told Hutch, he might misinterpret it as being gay so I can’t do that. Even though it’s not. Not that it would be a problem if it was, it’s just not because it’s Hutch.’

and meanwhile Hutch is sitting in the passenger seat like ‘tragedy! In LOVE with my STRAIGHT best friend!’ hashtag so in love with him hashtag but he’s straight

And this is why I do think they get together more or less immediately post-DIADP, not because either of them actually admits to anything or because Starsky actually successfully internalises Hutch telling him they’re already pretty gay, but rather because Hutch’s determinedly expressed indifference to gayness in general makes Starsky go ‘wait maybe even if he does misinterpret this as being gay - which it isn’t - it won’t matter’ and he finally makes a move
