You know, it's kinda funny how much of high fantasy centers around kings and nobility and courtly intrigue considering that the archetypal high fantasy, Lord of the Rings, had the rather explicit moral of "saving the world is up to this backwater hick and his gardener because no politician, least of all inherited nobility, would have the ability to see past their own ambition and throw away a weapon". Oh sure, Aragorn is a great king and all, but there's a reason he's over there running a distraction ring while the hobbits do the real work. Sauron loses because he gets distracted by kings and armies and great battles (i.e. typical high fantasy stuff) letting Frodo and Sam sneak through his back door and blow it all to hell.

Just saying, maybe old Jirt knew what he was saying when he said that the small folk doing their best and holding to each other was more powerful than a dozen alliances and superweapons and we should respect him for it.

I love Tolkien. I love Tolkien giving Eowyn this speech. I love Tolkien giving Eowyn this speech in response to Aragorn; noble, good, fair and just Aragorn, telling Eowyn why it's her duty to stay behind, lecturing her on the importance of valour without renown, gently chiding her for wanting the same thing that will never be denied him nor her brother and uncle, never acknowledging that the choices made for Eowyn are made for her because she's a woman.

And Eowyn not taking it. Eowyn confronting him and making it clear that even though he doesn't say "it's because you're a woman", no matter how he words it, it is because she's a woman and it's unjust. She is skilled, she is brave, and she deserves better than a lifetime of being left behind, being told to wait, living and tending to the house until the men need it no more.

Tolkien could have left it with Aragorn's speech about being brave without having glory, and left it there. It's not an unfair point to make in general. But to make it to a woman, the one warrior in her family who this being demanded of, because she's a woman, that is when it becomes unfair. And neither Eowyn nor Tolkien let Aragorn off the hook for that.

I love that the sexism in LOTR doesn't have to be overt or only shown by villainous characters, but subtly, by heroic characters who don't even notice it. And I love Eowyn gets to unapologetically point that out.

Honestly we really need to stop being weird about older adults who are virgins.

& not even purely in a "I'm sex repulsed &/or ace &/or not into the idea of so I willingly didn't have it" but also in a "I'm 80, I would've loved to have sex, but it takes two to tango & no one wanted to have sex w/ me-" and in a "I'm 60 & I wanted to, but I had anxiety so bad I just didn't put myself in a situation where I could've" way, etc. [But yes also the people who are like "I'm a virgin because I never wanted to have sex"]

Someone made a post about having their 40th birthday & still being a virgin & someone commented about how it was heartbreaking... [The OP talked about all their other achievements they reached & how they were happy - just never had sex btw. They weren't lamenting about how they never had sex]

You don't need sex/sexual intimacy to be happy. You don't need romantic intimacy to be happy. [Obviously having those may add happiness, but like you won't live a sad depressing empty life if you're single forever &/or never have sex]
