Oh, I assumed "The Tortured Poets Department" was just a phrase Tumblr users came up with to talk about Taylor Swift lyrics as if they were really deep. It doesn't sound bad to me, I read "Department" in the university sense.

I have to say, I am so clueless about this stuff. I can tell you so much about HP fandom in the early 2000s, know all about Ms.Scribe and My Immortal, but what is going on today, I simply do not know.

i think there should be some extra days every now and then that aren't a Monday or Thursday or Saturday or whatever but they're just. extra days. so regularly scheduled weekly activities like work or school don't happen on those days. nobody is allowed to speak the true names of the days. they could happen every couple months or so. we would deal with it just like we deal with daylight savings time or leap years. extra days.

so Anaïs Nin wrote Delta of Venus, a collection of erotica that includes smatterings of adultery, rape, incest, necrophilia, homosexuality, pretty heavy stuff for the 1940s, but it wasn't actually published until decades later as it was commissioned for private consumption by The Collector, an American business magnate who was also ordering smut from other writers like Henry Miller.

this is really fucking funny, like these days if Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates wanted to get a little hot under the collar they would just go on AO3 like everybody else, but how much better would it be if they threw cash at Legit Writers and then when they received some Legit Writing they ordered them to take out all the poetry... add more graphic scenes... make it clearer who is sticking what where... no I said no poetic language, cut it out!

but I think it would be even funnier if The Collector turned out to just be a framing device for any artist who wants to let their freak flag fly but is worried they'll be judged for it (probably doesn't apply to Nin), or needs a way to overcome the internal sense of cringe (also not applicable): it's not me that wants to make this filth, I'm merely engaging in work for hire here, I'm the blind instrument of a myopic muse!

space photography is a weird case artistically b/c it's explicitly not intended to convey what the naked human eye could perceive but a heavily processed visualisation of data. so kind of more akin to like an anatomical diagram that has all the organs laid out neatly so you can see what the hell you're doing. but then space photography is also a weird case scientifically b/c it has aesthetic dimensions that account for its popular reception & also guide the data processing. like the choice of colours, saturation, &c are intended to produce a pleasing picture, & the picture is put to rhetorical ends: usually a kind of generic humanist delight with the advancement of (gov't) space exploration. so in that sense the space photograph is specifically most like the anatomy in eg a vesalius plate: an artistic piece, used to defend a certain metaphysics wrt 'man's place in nature' &c. not exactly an untrue image but certainly an artificial one (as in: the product of artifice; of an artistic process; not intended to provide a simple 1:1 visual translation of nature but to interpret & advance an argument about it)

Every time I want to listen to music on my PC I have to wait a solid thirty seconds for the cranky old external hard drive where I keep anime soundtrack MP3s I downloaded off of Limewire in 2002 to spin up, and every time I remind myself that it beats the alternative.
