I was thinking about how an aspect swap like this would even be possible and then it hit me: a Cal swap.

A “normal” Bro is a really interesting concept, which makes me wonder how much different Dave would’ve turned out growing up. I definitely think Dave would’ve had more opportunities to develop his personality, which can be seen as very Heart player-y in the comic. He acts as “the heart” of the beta kids session (the glue friend) and seems to be able to understand/deal with the concept of splinters a lot better than his peers. I still think he would struggle with masculinity issues, but I also think his near-death experiences (associated with Time) would be far less common.

A Dirk with a possessed Cal would probably have no Hal, because one of the reasons he made Hal in the first place was to talk to someone who “gets him”. That’s one splinter down. Not to mention Dirk would be significantly more prepared for the game because of Cal possibly spilling timeline spoilers. Additionally, his obsessiveness would be spent more on winning the game and being “The Hero” rather than self-flagellating.

Full disclosure; this post will include explicit mentions and talk of sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and likely physical/psychological abuse. Also Bro Strider.

Preface:

First of all, November - Sparkbird has recently seen popularity because of the themes and easy association to OCs and characters. The artist has expressed that they don't mind this, so here I am making this post.

Secondly, we are a system with a lot of firsthand experience with all of this, so to say. I won't go into that shit, but if anyone tries to tell me I'm being insensitive or ridiculous in some way, redirect here and then fuck off.

Anyway.

The actual post:

Whenever I listen to "November", I can't help but think about Dave. This might be influenced by the uproar about it in general fandom spaces, but that doesn't really matter. What does matter is how much the song, and I mean almost every line, hits so so close to that sweet Dave Strider angst.

I've said before that I don't think Bro would outwardly ever assault or rape Dave. But that doesn't mean he hasn't tormented him in other ways, ways that may not necessarily seem like sexual abuse in the typical sense, but definitely are. I also think Bro would have sexually harassed Dave in different ways, and Dave, of course, would know. At least subconsciously.

There's the canonical things and instances of this, that could really be formatted as a list. We have the near constant presence of smuppets and phallic, sexual imagery everywhere but in Dave's own room. Dave's intense hatred for puppets not only comes from Lil Cal (who's a whole different story), but also from the plush, puppet ass constantly shoved in his face. As far as he's concerned, puppets are inherently horrifying/evil/whatever (Cal) and inherently sexual (smuppets).

There's the lack of privacy, cameras everywhere. Combined with the above mentioned shit, that calls for a very bad time.

A lack of privacy in on itself is bad. Everyone, especially kids ages 11/12 to like 17 need privacy. That's when everything changes, the whole world around you changes and you need to figure things out. It's not the only thing you need, but privacy is a big part of being a teenager. And Dave had the unfortunate circumstance of not getting to be a classic teenager, but he also lacked that sweet taste of privacy his entire life. That, along with being forced to be entirely hypervigilant.

Okay, now onto the song.

November is a song about sexual assault,.moving forward, and blaming yourself for it. It starts with the singer speaking about consent ("One small sound, one small word, in tongues all over the world[...] I said it, I didn't, I said it, I didn't"), questioning whether it is their fault, questioning whether they did or did not agree, if what they said was enough and whether it mattered. (This is further mentioned later in the song with the lyrics "I said it, I didn't / it doesn't matter what I said or didn't / admit it, you were never going to get it / I was always gonna get it")

Then, it goes on to talk about scars, whether psychological or physical, it doesn't matter. It talks about not being able to hide your scars, the scars never leaving. They'll always be there, you can't ever truly move on, the scars will always be there, a part of you.

This directly makes me think of Dave. Just, the inability to not blame yourself, whether for the abuse you've experienced, the sexual assault, kr whatever fucking else. Dave idolized his older brother in insanely unhealthy ways, but he didn't really have a choice. And of course the coolest, strongest man in your life, be it the only man in your life, is not at fault. He is, for being weak, never strong enough. Always just a bit from the finish line.

Next, I wanna mention this doozy of a line, because I don't want to discuss every single verse, like by line (I could, I just don't want to):

"One small sound, one small bite, one tomial tooth

One loggerhead shrike must skewer

My invertebrate doppelgänger

On barbed wire in a parallel universe"

Which is ultimately what made me want to make this post.

This line is supposed to (as far as I know) represent, wanting to go back in time, or to an alternate reality, where they did say no, where they surely said no, so that the outcome would change.

Which is, pretty much perfect.
