Silence cultivates quality thinking. Yes, yes, don't be surprised. There is such a thing as silence. Silence is when we stop melting our brains with Netflix and TikTok. When we turn off the radio and our phones.

The sound of wheels behind the window is suddenly inaudible. And there is simply no swearing coming in from the not-so-distant playground by your building. Shh, can you hear that? It’s quiet.

That is, there are sounds, but they are not annoying. Because they are natural. Your mind managed to distance itself. You found harmony within the sounds. Silence can be found anywhere. And it sounds good anywhere, too. It allows us to think little thoughts on a large scale. But please, not about work.

What do you think about when you find silence?

At first, it’s always school and work. Silence scares me, because it summons anxiety and fear. With no distractions available, one must control the mind.

The thoughts about school and work fade. Fear and anxiety step away. My mind chews on the idea of God, or the lack thereof. Sorrow replaces fear, loneliness substitutes anxiety. The world is cruel. Is it cruel, or is it just real? Why do we think that the world owes us kindness?

Acceptance. Accountability. There is no higher power to protect and absolve us of the blame for all that we are ashamed of.

Peace?

Sometimes I become unsure if silence truly exists. I crave it. Especially when I find myself surrounded by people, their questions, their problems… But also when I am alone with my thoughts, my questions, my problems.

Will I ever find harmony in the natural sounds? Maybe in my dreams? The thing is that in my sleep, I sleep. I'm just sleeping. Dreamless.
