As night falls upon Able all the residents tend to their nightly routines.

Jody tries to knit but succumbs to the depths of sleep barely three rows in. While someone watches over both her and the passed out in the corner of the rec room Runner 7. Bonnie sleeps close to her beloved runner. Both runners too exhausted after a stressful day to even care where they sleep.

Simon and Janine are using the evening to have their own workout in the empty running track. It is rare the track is not used for proper training these days.

Maxie spends one more evening with a cigarette and her notes…waiting.

A torch shines bright inside the forest where Jamie carved out his and Archies initials enclosed by a heart. He never got to show her his handiwork. He never knew this would end so abruptly.

Sam’s desk is always messy, with mysterious stains no one truly wants to know the origin of…and yet somehow everyone knows exactly what these stains are…they are the last little bit of normalcy in the world. Sam’s messiness, although annoying, brings a bit of the “normal” to everyone’s life. No matter what Janine says, she does enjoy the clumsiness and habitual announces from the hoodie-wearing goofball.

Five’s backpack haphazardly emptied after her supply run that evening. A sports bra still sticking outside of the pocket. Simon got her a new pin just the other day. It was a simple pin on which he scribbled down the number five. It was a simple gesture but it warmed Five’s heart greatly. Sara joked that they might stitch a bra to her bag and that would be indication enough of whose bag it is.

They had found a sign three weeks ago. Janine scolded the Runners profusely for eating their energy dragging a Stop sigh along but, yesterday she made a Road works ahead sign appear in the Commshack right next to the bloodied stop sign. Someone put on a note saying “I sure hope it does”. There is a betting pool going around whether it was Janine, Sam, or Maxine.

The radio husbands lead the township into the night with their soothing voices and a song of hope and love. All this while being just happy together. Forgetting for a brief moment what a truly horrifying world awaits outside the gates.

Ed reads a goodnight story to Molly. As she falls asleep she asks about her mom and the poor man still doesn’t know how to properly convey to his little girl that she will never be back. He doesn’t let her see his tears. She doesn’t let him see hers.

Five’s cat, playfully names Rocky (short for Rocket Launcher) sleeps in the commshacks bed, where Sam always sleeps…and lately Five began joining him. Rocky just waits until the pair comes back. He waits until Five wakes up crying and shaking. He waits so he can curl up to her side and purr.

Speaking of the comms. Sam never allows all the headsets to be hung right. He claims at least one has to be different. He claims that is the room is too organized it gets too serious. Simon’s headset has broken when he fell off of a roof so it is already fragile. His stays taped up together and hanging upright. Five’s headset has her mic taped over but in all honesty, her mic never worked properly to begin with. Tonight Jody hung hers by the wires and Evan tossed his on the cupboard. These two had a rough run.

Janine can’t phantom how Sam thinks the comms can become too serious for her it is a minefield of dirt and mess. The scratches on the wall where runners decided to compare their heights. The ever so growing collection of polaroids on the wall and the damn unwatered plant. She keeps watering it so that Sam has something nice in his kingdom.

Sam has noticed that she comes by every day. Despite their bickering, he enjoyed her company and doesn’t have the heart to tell her the plant is actually fake and that Jody got it for him on the anniversary of his arrival. Jody would have never trusted him with a living plant after all.

Sara sits in one of the empty streets between the Runner’s huts. She has her tea light and polaroids laid out. One last prayer to a God she no longer thinks exists. Her tears fall down upon the pictures of her boys. She wishes she had more than these two, but she is also happy she had them in her wallet. Some people do not have any.

As deep night falls and stars begin to show, Sam sits atop of the comms’ roof and waits for Five to come up to stargaze with him. Despite all the bad things that occurred that day he sparks up a seemingly easy conversation. The words he says are easy flowing and calming but the implications deep and worrying.

Yet just another night at Able…

...Tomorrow is another day.
