Hiii, I found some old post of yours that showed some art you made for the Battle Camp game by Pennypop. Would you mind sharing some more about what it was like working for them? :) I really love that game a lot but you rarely hear anyone talk about it! I even made some really bad fanart of it when I was like 18 😂 I would love to hear about your experience!
Hey there! Sure thing. Crazy that you dug that deep back into my art 😆 It's been quite a while since I've worked for them so I'll try to remember as much as I can.
For the most part, it was neat doing the art for them. A lot of it consisted of them (usually the Art Director) giving me concept art of creatures and characters to turn into vector art using Adobe Illustrator and make them in a way that was readily animatable. This meant I had to separate them into parts like a puppet. Sometimes, I even got to make the concept art from scratch. They would give me a prompt about the character/creature and a theme to go with it.
If there was a upcoming holiday, I would be tasked on making something that fit that. Examples of those would be the eastern dragon and a wukong-looking character for Chinese New Year just to name a few.
I also got to work on some cutesy and adorable characters and creatures too. Sometimes, I would just get the base character concepts and I would have to come up with what the evolved version would look like, which were pretty fun to do. For me personally, it felt like I was designing Pokemon evolutions.
And that would be pretty much what I did for the game, at least in terms of art. I would work for them for one and half or two years until my contract with them ended.
Hope that helped! It's not everyday I get asked about BattleCamp 🙃
