Fake Service Dogs?
You’re sitting at a cafe with your friend when suddenly a woman walks in with a toy poodle in her purse. The manager at the counter informs her “I’m sorry, but we do not allow dogs”. She replies with a heavy sigh and a “She’s a service dog. She can come with me”. Not knowing much about service dog law, and worrying about getting sued for asking further questions, he sits this woman down at a booth. There, she promptly unzips her purse and places the dog on the booth seat next to her. When the woman’s food comes out, the little dog begs and she feeds her bits off her plate. This dog is not public access trained, and proceeds to bark at those who walk by. This dog is a nuisance and causes many in the restaurant to complain. The manager cannot do anything but inform the unhappy customers that this is a service dog, so he can’t ask her to leave. In the end, it’s the customers who end up leaving.
Now I walk in with my highly trained service dog pressed against my leg in a perfect heel position, and I’m quickly bombarded by the manager telling me “No dogs! No dogs! We ALL know what happened last time”. Confused, I tell him “This is my medical alert and medical response service dog. Her right to accompany me is protected under federal law.” With a sigh, he seats me at a table far away from others where my dog promptly tucks under my feet, out of sight. When my food arrives my dog is still tucked tightly under the table because she knows she’s not supposed to eat when she’s on duty. She stays there ignoring those who walk past for the remainder of my meal. When we leave, a woman by the door exclaims “Woah, I didn’t know there was a dog here!”
See the difference?
Scenario number two occurs at a local grocery store when a man decides to bring his certified emotional support animal into the store with him. Upon entering he flashes a fancy ID card and certification papers. This dog is not as unruly as the first, but he still forges ahead of his handler, sniffs the food on display, and may seek attention from those who walk past. You find this dog adorable, and when he and his owner walk past you ask to pet him. The owner says yes and explains how all he had to do was go online, register his dog, and a few weeks later they sent him a vest, ID card, and certification papers.
Now I pull into the same grocery store. I’m in a rush to get an ingredient for a dish I’m making so I hurry into the store with my service dog next to me. I’m quickly stopped by a manager who demands to see my service dog’s certification card. Remember, this is NOT required by law, and most real service dog teams don’t have them. After 15 minutes of trying to educate, pulling up the ADA website on my phone, back and forth bickering, and drawing more of a crowd than I want to describe… I’m finally allowed in. I grab my ingredient, stand in line (where my service dog obediently moves between my legs to make space for those around me), and I get bombarded by people asking to pet my dog. I explain that she’s working, she has a very important job to do, and she’s not allowed to be pet while on duty. People walk away grumbling and complaining about how rude I was when other handlers like the man they met earlier allow their dog to be pet.
Moral of the story? Fake service dogs create real problems. The ones who are impacted the most are the true service dog handlers who rely on their dogs every day to help mitigate their disability. How would you feel if everywhere you went, you couldn’t make it 10 feet in the door because people were asking you questions? Imagine how much time that would take out of your already hectic day. Businesses lose customers because word gets out that there are unruly dogs in their store, customers become misinformed and start thinking some of these behaviors are okay, some people even start to believe the lies that anyone can just register their dog online and make him a service dog. The result? MORE fake service dogs. MORE real problems.

winter walk dog safety!
please wipe your pups paws after taking them on a winter walk. un-purified rock salts contain traces of heavy metals such as mercury and lead. however, most municipalities in north america use ferrocyanide (a form known to cause cancer) as an anti-caking agent to facilitate the spreading of rock salt and prevent clumping. these ice melter toxins combined with antifreeze (ethylene glycol, that’s been spilled onto roads/sidewalks/driveways) are known to irritate pets who lick their paws and ingest these chemicals in harmful quantities after their winter walks. dogs that have stepped in antifreeze will be inclined to lick it because it smells and tastes SWEET.
antifreeze poisoning symptoms: - lack of coordination - excessive drinking and urination - gastrointestinal irritation - coma, seizures, and/or death
rock salt poisoning symptoms: - burns to the mouth - dehydration - raw and sore paws - liver and kidney failure - pancreatitis
protect your furry four legged pals this winter season!! i had a dog ingest antifreeze after licking some off someone’s driveway and it was heartbreaking watching his condition worsen while on the way to the vet. he ended up being treated and made full recovery but i would have been devastated if it was anything other than old age that took him from me. stay safe!

charlietheskonk:
charlietheskonk:
charlietheskonk:
charlietheskonk:
in my preschool class we’re holding “class president of the day” elections this week.  we already elected our first female president on monday, even though one of the boy’s campaign promises was to “bring jewels” to the classroom.
tuesday: we talked about the real election happening today. one child says she hopes hillary clinton wins and all of her classmates chime in with sober agreements. one boy says voting for the drumpf “would not be a very good idea.”
they elected the other female candidate today in our mock election, so she won over the jewels boy and the other boy, who said he would make bracelets for the entire class. my students are surprisingly practical, seeing as they voted for the candidate who would clean the school and help them with their work.
once president, she did do those things, but also punched one of her constituents into the sandbox, so, i mean … she’s sort of a typical politician i guess
wednesday: the children announced tensely to me that trump won the real election. one boy said, “i still don’t like him, but we can’t say we hate him, because then we would be saying we hate the president.”
i said that was true, and that saying we hate him sounds a lot like something trump would say. they nodded and continued to help the toddler class students get their snack plates to the table without dropping their apple slices.
they elected one of the girls again, so she served her second term by helping her friends button their art smocks before we made our galaxy paintings. (because if you think i’m gonna create an art lesson plan to focus any more attention on this shitshow of an election, you are wrong.)
neither of the boy candidates have stood much of a chance in this race so far. one of them came to me and said he was rethinking his campaign promises, and could he make a new poster
he got a paper and wrote a huge list of ways that he would help keep all the children safe, including reminding them to use walking feet and not to touch broken glass. then he volunteered to work in the toddler room and cleaned up all of their messes, and moved all the shelves in my room so he could clean behind them.
i’m feeling so hopeless right now, but these children remind me that there is a future and they. are. it.
thursday: today i was very pleased. our president today is the little boy who made changes to his campaign promises. he also wore tyrannosaurus rex foot slippers. when the voters were shaking his hand to congratulate him on his victory, one said, “good job, and thank you for having monster feet”
he watched everyone like a hawk to make sure they were being safe, and then spent the morning writing in his journal about how much he loves all of us and his bicycle.

read widely and critically
our confirmation biases are built into the internet.
facebook’s algorithms are constructed to show you news that aligns with your political beliefs. your friends’ posts are much more likely to rise to the top if they already agree with you; if you’re on the anti-trump train you’re gonna see a lot of WaPo articles telling you that everyone hates trump. that his businesses are suffering. that republicans that endorse him are losing their re-elections.
a similar effect happens, organically, with tumblr: most people understandably don’t follow people they vigorously disagree with politically.
and you read these articles and you think: everyone hates him. everyone knows these scandals, everyone cares about these scandals. surely most of america has read these and is as sane as i am. he won’t win.
1). this creates political complacency.
there were people who stayed home or voted third party on election day because their social media feeds told them trump didn’t stand a ghost of a chance.
but your swing-voter uncle isn’t seeing the same stuff you are in his little walled-off corner of the internet. he’s probably seeing the media blitz on clinton’s emails.
2). we don’t know how to talk to each other.
though it’s true that–at least in polls–trump voters skewed wealthier than average, we would be unwise to ignore the huge, growing regional values disconnect that’s never been successfully bridged in the US.
the thing is, these parts of america know very little about each other. i’ve seen each side loudly declare that the other half isn’t “real america.” and in their social circles, this seems true.
but discounting half the population doesn’t make them stop existing. pretending that economically vulnerable trump voters don’t exist shuts down communication about a better way forward. whether you agree that these people deserve sympathy or not, you can’t efficiently argue your point if you don’t try to understand their logic. this article is a good place to start.
3). people who do this for a living are not immune.
up until the votes were counted, huffpo’s analysts gave hillary a 98% chance of winning the election. you can read more here about what went wrong.
when nate silver of fivethirtyeight gave her chances hovering around 70-80%, this was cautious enough for a huffpo writer to try to eviscerate him for “unskewing polls in favor of trump.” the message was: trump won’t win, nobody thinks he will win, and you’re either scaremongering or an idiot for giving him even an outside chance.
and this was a common belief in left-leaning circles, especially among those who tend to get their news from a single source: a single paper, or a single facebook feed, or a single tumblr dash. political writers believed this, too.
So what can you do?
well, imo:
do not get your news from a single source. ideally, this goes for every news story you care about: read at least two articles from different publications. they’ll often have a slightly different slant. i’d recommend that the sources you choose have different political leanings. do this before you share the story.
read the whole article. often the most sensational bit will show up in the heading, especially if it’s been linked on social media. DO NOT SKIP THE ENDING, and definitely do not skip the paragraph where they try to shove in an opposing viewpoint if one exists.
check sources. literally do not reblog a thing until you have clicked a goddamn link, i swear to god
check a news aggregator that is not social media. use the news app. check google news. don’t just click through on links from tumblr and facebook, because i guarantee you aren’t getting the full story and you are not getting the same story half of america is getting
read fox news sometimes. i am so sorry. i am so, so sorry. but again: if you don’t understand what someone is thinking, you cannot change their mind.
engage in conversation. i don’t mean argument, i mean 1x1 relational work. this goes especially for white people (men, straight people, etc) who have less to fear by talking politics with trump supporters. this post is an excellent guide to effective political communication. you won’t have the energy to do this all the time, and it can be incredibly uncomfortable. but if you can, you have the potential to learn and teach a lot.
point contradictions out to your political allies. it can be uncomfortable to have an unpopular political opinion in your friend circle. but if someone is spreading misinformation (which can then be debunked by an opponent to make your side look bad) let them know! it can be private; it can be polite! but you owe it to your allies to diversity your thinking.’
the world is full of complexity, and recognizing this makes you a more effective advocate.

First, understand that the opposite of panic is not blithe acceptance of the situation – it’s clear-minded, positive, day-to-day action. Panic makes you do stupid shit or, even worse, curl up into a ball and do nothing. Don’t tell me you have reason to panic. You never have reason to panic. You have reason to act.
So yeah, be upset for as long as you want. Get drunk. Do whatever you have to do. After that, I want you to sober up, splash water on your face, and consider some facts.
Gay marriage has overwhelming support nationwide – 55 percent to 37 percent against.
Legal abortion is favored by 56 percent, with 41 percent opposed.
The vast majority of the population supports background checks for gun buyers – up to 90 percent in some polls.
A majority of Americans support some kind of universal health care, 58 percent to 37 percent.
64 percent of Americans are worried about global warming. Only 36 percent are not.
And – get this – Americans overwhelmingly agree that immigration helps the country more than it hurts, by a 59 percent to 33 percent margin.
Okay?
Your country didn’t go anywhere. It’s right here where you left it. America is nothing more than a big ol’ collection of people, and those people are more diverse and progressive than they have ever been. That train won’t be stopped. Donald Trump’s supporters are by and large an aging and shrinking demographic. We didn’t see the backlash coming, but that’s on us – a look at our history would have taught us to expect it.
In light of that, there are a few things to understand going forward.
Don’t Panic

what you need to do if i have a convulsive seizure
I was just complaining to my friend that my oldest sister didn’t know what to do the last time I had a convulsive seizure, and I ended up injured because of it. And my friend said that actually, they don’t know what to do when they see someone have a convulsive seizure, either.
So I thought I’d explain it to you.  I’m not a doctor, and I have no medical training and not everything here will apply to everyone who has convulsive seizures, these are just the things that apply to me, and when in doubt, call an ambulance.
Here’s what you do:
Look around. Am I lying in the middle of a busy street or on the railroad tracks, or somewhere else dangerous, like in the bathtub? If yes, drag me to somewhere where I am not in imminent danger of being hit by a truck or drowning.
Am I somewhere safe, but lying near dangerous things like fire or knives or broken glass or pans of boiling water or anything that can hurt me? Move the dangerous things away from me.
My body will be convulsing. That means my head and my arms and my legs are rapidly hitting the ground. Put something soft underneath my head. If there’s a cushion right there, perfect. If not, wad up your coat or shove your shopping bag under my head. If there’s nothing immediately to hand that would take you more than a few seconds to grab, stick your feet underneath my head, it’ll work.
Am I wearing anything around my neck, like a tight collar, or a necktie, or a choker? Loosen it, so my airway is clear.
Don’t restrict my movements - don’t try to hold my arms and legs down. You’ve already moved all the dangerous things away from me, and cushioned my head, so don’t hold me down, unless it is necessary to keep me from doing serious harm.
Don’t put anything in my mouth. A lot of people think you need to stick your fingers or a spoon or something into the person’s mouth to prevent them choking on their tongue.  Don’t do this.
Try to make a note of the time the seizure first started. If the seizure lasts for longer than five minutes, call an ambulance.
When the convulsing/jerking has stopped, roll me onto my side. If you know what the recovery position is, put me in the recovery position, if you don’t, just roll me onto my side, and check my airway. If I’m not breathing, or I’m having trouble breathing, call an ambulance.
It seems to be instinctive to help someone get back to their feet as soon as the seizure is over. Don’t do this with me. After a seizure, I’m in something called a post-ictal state. It makes me very, very confused, and lying on the ground or sitting somewhere soft is the safest place for me. If you pull me to my feet while I’m still this confused, I will walk directly into traffic or put my hand on a hot stove because I won’t know where I am, or what’s happening, and often I won’t be able to see at all for a few minutes. Keep me somewhere safe until I’ve fully recovered.
If I have another seizure before I’ve fully recovered from the earlier one, call an ambulance.
If you think I might be hurt, or you’re confused or not sure about what to do, call an ambulance.
That’s all there is to it. Make sure I’m not in immediate physical danger; cushion my head (but don’t restrain it); when the jerking stops, roll me onto my side and check my airway; keep me somewhere safe until I’m fully recovered, and if the seizure lasts a long time, or I have a second one, or you aren’t sure what to do or you think I might be hurt, call an ambulance. That’s it. It’s not hard, and I promise you can do this.

How to survive the next 4 years
-Be the best person you can be. Show everyone you’re not a photocopy of the worst stereotype ever.
-Take the years one day at a time. Seeing the big picture can be overwhelming and scary. Focus on what lays before you now, today is another day I strive to pass.
-Ignore the haters and the mud-slingers. You’re you. Celebrate that fact publicly and learn to love yourself for being you. But please don’t be obnoxious about it.
-Breathe. Stress and not so warmly welcomed surprises will pop up in your life. Take a hot bath. Giggle at the funniest posts over puppies and kittens.
-Every day is a gift. Educate yourself into becoming wise and stay cool. Hang out with friends and family. Make more friends. Find new things to make life better.
Look, people who stand in the limelight aren’t you. So don’t let that image drag you down into the dumps.
As for me, I’m going to continue to be a gamer and write fanfics to dream of impossible adventures. New games and learning opportunities are always in sight, so away I go!
You’re you. It’s as simple as that. You can find a way to make sunshine out of the materials you have.

I'm actually surprised how scared everyone is. I mean, yeah, this totally sucks but half the country isn't ready to start slaughtering people. Many of the people I know who voted trump think he's a total douche. He exposed a lot of crazies, but half the country isn't ready to start fighting against differences in race, sexuality, and gender. Many are just stumped (trumped) and dunno what else to do. We are still one American people. We can't let ourselves be divided. We need more love right now.
Yep, and it’s the pattern america has always followed. Every couple elections we swing back from a democratic president to a republican one, and vice versa. It’s because people get disillusioned with the state of the country, get mad, and swing violently the other way to see if the opposite political party will make things better. Then they get frustrated and switch again some 4 or 8 years later.
Not to mention Trump didn’t call himself republican until he was nominated, and a lot of right wingers don’t like many of his crazier ideas. That said, even a republican majority congress/senate would still most likely prevent him from doing something -totally- reckless.
