The Princess of Orange Visiting the Work-shop of Bartholomeus van der Helst, Museum of the Netherlands

Mary Stuart, the widow of Stadtholder William II, looks at her portrait in the workshop of the 17th-century painter Van der Helst. In the background is his unfinished monumental painting Banquet of the Civic Guard, in which the militiamen celebrate the end of the Eighty Years’ War. For his likeness of the princess, Scholten relied on an existing portrait, also by Van der Helst. Scholten thus demonstrated his knowledge of both 17th-century Dutch painting and national history.

Self-Portrait, Vincent van Gogh, 1887, Art Institute of Chicago: European Painting and Sculpture

In 1886 Vincent van Gogh left his native Holland and settled in Paris, where his beloved brother Theo was a dealer in paintings. Van Gogh created at least twenty-four self-portraits during his two-year stay in the energetic French capital. This early example is modest in size and was painted on prepared artist’s board rather than canvas. Its densely dabbed brushwork, which became a hallmark of Van Gogh’s style, reflects the artist’s response to Georges Seurat’s revolutionary pointillist technique in A Sunday on La Grande Jatte—1884. But what was for Seurat a method based on the cool objectivity of science became in Van Gogh’s hands an intense emotional language. The surface of the painting dances with particles of color—intense greens, blues, reds, and oranges. Dominating this dazzling array of staccato dots and dashes are the artist’s deep green eyes and the intensity of their gaze. “I prefer painting people’s eyes to cathedrals,” Van Gogh once wrote to Theo. “However solemn and imposing the latter may be—a human soul, be it that of a poor streetwalker, is more interesting to me.” From Paris, Van Gogh traveled to the southern town of Arles for fifteen months. A nurseryman commissioned this drawing of a tulip by Jan van der Vinne. It is not a portrait of the flower in its entirety; the leaves and the blossom are depicted separately. He also recorded the tulip’s name. The drawing thus served as an illustration in the price list of a flower catalogue.

Yosemite Valley, Albert Bierstadt , 1866, Cleveland Museum of Art: American Painting and Sculpture

During the summer of 1863, Bierstadt visited Yosemite Valley in California and made numerous sketches. Back in his New York studio, he used them to produce many majestic paintings, including this view of Half Dome, one of Yosemite’s most distinctive features. Such scenes thrilled East Coast audiences and helped encourage early movements to save America’s natural wonders. In 1864, President Lincoln signed a bill preserving Yosemite as public property.
