I just want to address the queerbaiting thing. As someone who actually studies this, and other things such as the way homosexuality is portrayed in media across the world as an actual hobby/semi-professional thing (currently working on a book about this), I can say pretty definitively that a lot of sports anime do at least SOME queerbaiting. I think people don’t really have a handle on what actual queerbaiting is, and what it means within the larger text of the work, before they dismiss the notion. Queerbaiting can, and often does, exist within a series that otherwise portrays characters as “just friends”. Queerbaiting is basically like fanservice on steroids, where it’s obvious it’s more than a one-off joke. Like I understand what user @mistertiger is saying, but the thing is queerbaiting isn’t a zero-sum situation, and that’s why there is often fights about it with one side being like “NO JUST FRIENDS” and the other side being like “TOTES GAY”, because in reality, both are kind of right. The people reading into the homosexual subtext? They’re right. The people reading the surface text? They’re right too. It’s one of the reasons as an LGBT person that queerbaiting bothers me so much.

It makes people desperate for representation (I won’t lie, during Free!’s second season I was aaalmost convinced that at least Rei and Nagisa (if not Mako and Haru, whether a person ships them or not I think everybody agrees that it’s pretty obvious that MakoHaru and SouRin are the two couples KyoAni embraced as pseudo-canon/merchandise worthy/what sell the best/whatever you wanna call it) were going to seal the deal at certain times) seem like they’re “reaching” when in reality we’re just recognizing the use of common romantic tropes (seriously I don’t want to make this an essay but I could write pages on how shows like Free! adopt common romantic plot devices and try to use them for “just friends” narratives which naturally confuses a lot of people) that they use to create romantic/sexual tension in animes with heterosexual couples. Queerbaiting actually often exists mainly where there is NO plan to get the same-sex characters together. Producers and writers for these shows often joke about it (Tiger & Bunny comes to mind, with the absolute wealth of behind-the-scenes chatter about those two, and how that the series creator meant to leave their relationship ambiguous on purpose, not to mention this gem between the producers- Matsui: “If we consider the perspective of the main target audience, which is adult men in their thirties, then wouldn’t they be happy to have a young male colleague yearning for them?” Tamura: “They would?” Matsui: “And why wouldn’t they? Don’t you get this impression that a man beloved by somebody of the same sex must be much cooler than a man beloved by somebody of the opposite sex?”), they’ll throw in hints in the actual show, but there is no push for actual representation.

Other shows actually kind of do go all the way (Samurai Flamenco, without putting in spoilers just OH WOW), and then they do the equivalent of trying to catch a wild horse that they’ve just let out of the enclosure themselves by putting out statements like “oh no they’re not meant to be gay”, when the entire body of work and merchandise contradicts that in a biiig way. Japan has a huge problem with portraying homosexual and bisexual men positively or even realistically, which is where a lot of this comes from. They can tease and titillate, but they know an actual canon gay couple is going to be a Big Deal in a way that doesn’t gel with the way Japan views male homosexual desire and romance. Without getting into the larger cultural reasons WHY that is, I’ll just leave it at that. I’m kind of curious what mistertiger means by Free! being in ‘a different circumstance’ too. How so? For me, I think most sports anime are guilty of at least some of it, it just depends on how extreme we’re talking, with series like Oofuri (Big Windup) and Free! on the extreme end of the scale, which is where people interested in talking about this subject should really concentrate.

Most sports animes don't have queerbaiting, imo? (Big wind up is one, Free is a different circumstance, honestly. ) Like people have way too much of a misunderstanding on the difference between friendships vs lovers. I just find it kind of sad people can't be close without having a crush (opposite sexed characters have this problem a lot. Plus its misandric since guys can't show affection without people insinuating dating. Even if they are gay/bi. best friend =/= wanting to fuck tbh)

There is a few more like Free that do though but I do think moooost don’t, but Free most certainly does, and like I’m not super into sports anime and I don’t think the other mods are either so we don’t know a whole lot about the whole genre but I did like Free and we just think it’s safer to avoid it and the others like it but people have brought up one that’s about a guy playing sports to impress a girl and we’d definitely let that in, but I do agree on the friendship thing, it happens way too often like does no one on this site have close friends.

Sengoku Basara Judge End Thoughts and Impressions

(Note: X-posted in pretty much the same form to  LJ but I figured I would post it here!)

WARNING: SPOILERS!

Okay, since no one else has done this yet...how did everyone feel about Judge End? I've had to catch up on things so I literally JUST finished it as of a few minutes ago.

First thing is first. The art style...overall I wasn't won over by it. I love all different styles and I thought for sure by the end of the season I would appreciate the style for what it was, but I found that only Ieyasu looked better in this style (maybe I felt it aged him a bit?). Kojuurou in particular really suffered, I noticed he was constantly drawn with a small head and strange angles that just didn't work for me. Sasuke as well, I can't even quite explain what was wrong with him but looking at stills of him, I guess it's the same as Kojuurou, there's something lacking in his design for me. The battle scenes were definitely a pro for me! Having them be so bloody and visceral really amped up the adrenaline factor for me. As much as I prefer how the previous seasons were handled on a plot scale, the fights here definitely feel more epic and like they have much more weight to them. I really thought not only Tadakatsu, Mori, and Yoshitsugu were dead, I thought Mitsunari was going to die too. The plot is where it all fell apart for me, and as much as I love fight scenes, obviously that can't be all there is to an anime. The reason I'm so conflicted is because there are individual MOMENTS that I loved, even though I feel like it wasn't so much a reinterpretation of canon as bastardization (in a loving way of course) of it, but overall the show dragged endlessly during the "countdown" portion, and since I'm not a Masamune/Yukimura fan (I don't like them as a couple, but I'm writing this more as a general comment, so what I mean is I feel their rivalry is just a little too hyped, especially because it lacks what I feel is adequate trigger for it.) It ruined what I feel like was an anime supposed to focus more on the Sekigahara plot. I loved Masamune's fight with Mitsunari, and after being unimpressed with him all season (normally I love Masamune so I was surprised to find him grating on my nerves!) I was glad to see him acknowledge Kojuurou and them being back to being the unstoppable duo. The humour felt a little misplaced this season too, I didn't really need a break from the otherwise serious and heavy battle scene to see "Revolution" convert to Xavism. I laughed more out of absolute shock than any real humour. Otani. Yes, Otani deserves his own paragraph. (This character is way underloved, so getting so much of him in this anime? Yes please!) I was just blown away by all the choices they laid out for him in Judge End! When I thought he died, I was irritated because I felt like it kind of cheapened the canon where he sacrifices his life for Mitsunari directly instead of in a far off battle. But having Kojuurou be the one to recite Mouri's lines? That was a completely unexpected and incredible change in my opinion. And changing it at the end there, with Kojuurou adding in dialogue that feels true to his character, I loved it. Not to mention the fact that I adore the relationships between Tadakatsu and Ieyasu, and Otani and Mitsunari, so to see them all alive at the end was just...I loved it. The fact that the "decisive battle at Sekigahara" had no victor left me with mixed feelings despite my overwhelming need for happy endings, but I like that they respected that Ieyasu and Mitsunari are characters that will never, ever get along again. Keeping that bone deep hatred and despair Mitsunari has for Ieyasu felt true enough to me that I was able to get over what I feel was a bit of a cheap ending for such a heavy season. Overall I feel like I'm back where I was at the beginning...conflicted about this whole thing!
