I have just finished writing a new workshop with ideas for connecting sensory learners of all ages to RE.
St Patricks Day is a couple of weeks off, but while fresh in my head, I thought I'd share a slide from the workshop showing how simple a themed sensory box can be.
I have taken excerpts from my 'St Patricks Day' Sensory Story and Teaching Pack and placed sensory items in the box linking to the text. https://multisensorystories.etsy.com/.../st-patricks-day...
My top tips for using sensory boxes
1. Keep swapping the items to keep the activity fresh and interesting.
2. Swap out items the sensory explorer rejects or becomes bored of
3. Sensory boxes are a great activity to use during those gaps in the day, at the start of the day (for settling students when they arrive and you are sorting bags/diaries/medications etc), at the end of the day whilst waiting for transport and during pre-transition (those 5 or 10 minutes before lunch!)

The Sensory Week Ahead
14th Feb Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day Sensory Bag
Sensory bags are a cheap and fun way to engage the senses and develop language skills. Choose a non-see-through bag that is tactile and catches the eye.
See the visual below for items to place inside the bag
When choosing items think of engaging all the senses: Add items that stimulate the vision, tactile items that feel nice to the touch, items to smell and taste and items that make interesting sounds.
Give the bag a gentle shake to gain the sensory explorer's attention.
Invite the sensory explorer to place their hand into the bag and select an item.
Encourage the sensory explorer to use their sense of smell, touch, hearing and taste to guess what the item is (If they are unsure then provide plenty of clues.)
Build Functional language skills.
Ask the sensory explorer to tell you or show you what you might do with the item and where you might find it.
(If they are unsure, model what to do with the item and see if they can copy your action.)
Allow the sensory explorer time to explore the item and process the information then shake the bag again for them to select another item.
Keep language simple.
Focus on phrases such as 'Choose' or 'Take one' when presenting the bag to the student.
Focus on the name of the object e.g., 'Heart', 'Chocolate' and two-word phrases e.g., 'Red Rose'.
Model verbs: 'Smell' 'Eat'.

The Sensory Week Ahead
October 6th - National Badger Day October 7th - Lost in the Dark Peal
October 6th - National Badger Day Sensory Activity Idea: Listen to the sound of badgers
Badgers make many noises depending on how they feel including: barking, chittering, growling, hissing, purring, snarling, sniffing, snorting and yelping.
Explore the sensation of a shaving brush to represent the badger's fur.
Explore a back scratcher to represent the badger's claws.
Play badger sound effects via your interactive whiteboard/Talking Tile/BIGmack/Dictaphone/iPad or similar device. Follow the link below to a library of badger sounds including eating, grooming, playing, scratching, sniffling https://sound-effects.bbcrewind.co.uk/search?q=badger...
Extend Learning
Can the sensory explorer guess what the badger is doing according to the noise they are making? e.g., eating, sniffing.
Can the student(s) match any sounds the badger is making to emotions? (annoyed, anxious, calm, confused, content, excited, relaxed, hurt, sad?)
Discuss the noises we make when we express emotion (crying when sad, laughing when happy etc)
Earthworms make up most of a badger's diet. You can supplement their food in the winter.
If you are lucky enough to have a badger visit your outdoor area, here are some of the foods they enjoy:
Fresh or dried fruit (apples, pears, plums), dried dog food, (unsalted sugar-free) peanut butter, mealworms.
Don't forget to leave a bowl of fresh, clean water.
Place a little sand around their eating area to see if you can spot any badger tracks.
October 7th - Lost in the Dark Peal
'Twyford Church' in Hampshire rings their bells on Oct 7th each year. This tradition originates from the story of a traveller who was lost in the fog and was able to find his way home by following the sound of the bells.
Activity
Dim the lights in the room.
Re-create the effect of fog by lighting a joss stick or by lightly draping a piece of net material or garden fleece in front of the sensory explorer's face.
Tip!
Place the material in the freezer beforehand for an authentic icy fog sensation.
Offer the sensory explorer a choice of bells: ankle bells, bicycles bells, chimes, cowbell, finger cymbals, hand bells, jingle stick, sleigh bells.
Practice ringing the bells at different tempos (fast/slow), sound levels (loud, quiet)
Can the sensory explorer copy a beat?
Does the sensory explorer show a preference for a particular bell?
Can the sensory explorer follow an instruction to 'stop' and 'start' ringing the bells?
