I woke up to some pretty terrible news today. I found out someone named Jeanette Hayes (NYC “artist”; not be confused with London Jeanette Hayes) stole my artwork by unlawfully using it without my permission, never bothering to contact or credit me, modifying it, treating it as her sole work, and selling it for a huge sum of money.
And the worst part is, I’m not the only victim.
She’s stolen from several dozen other artists, sometimes not even attributing but fully replicating, and the galleries won’t do a thing about it except continue to back her up. When she’s confronted on the matter, she simply blocks people or deletes the comments; same with any media-outlet hosting or promoting her. In the end money talks. I don’t believe this to be artistic expression in good faith. Based on her notoriety and her responses, she’s clearly belittling the art and the artists whose works she steals from.
And really, whatever pretentious excuse is made on behalf of this “contemporary art”, it’s really just vandalism to me; absent of my feelings on the matter, absent of my love for the subject matter, absent of respect for me; because my artwork isn’t just some official stock art to be used freely.
I don’t want more people to have to feel this way, and the galleries need to know that this isn’t okay, and that this sort of behaviour shouldn’t be endorsed.
Here’s the link to the gallery: https://www.artsy.net/artwork/jeanette-hayes-there-will-be-blood Here’s the email of the gallery:  [email protected] Here’s a Buzzfeed article on some of the other works she’s stolen: https://www.buzzfeed.com/krishrach/an-artist-has-been-accused-of-plagiarizing-japanese-artists?utm_term=.ra8k96k63#.qdBDvoDoQ
Please help spread the word; or if you can also, please email the galleries explaining to them that things like this should not be condone. It’s sad to say, that the galleries aren’t likely to do anything unless notably pressured, and the reality is…Hayes is not at all remorseful and still continues this line of insincerity.

Admission #218: Use That Line
Me at the airport counter: Could I have my seat switched somewhere further up?
Counter guy: I have one seat, emergency row. Could you perform the necessary duties and responsibilities in the event of an emergency?
Me: Yes. Trust me, I'm a doctor.
Counter guy: Legally, I have to ask everyone but that's also very cool.
(I realize then what I said and died on the inside)

Opening commissions again so that I can help mom with Jade’s medical bills. What she has is treatable, but it’s gonna be a bit costly to cover, and her vet visit already hurt quite a bit ^^;;. So to help my cute puppy feel better, I’m taking some on.
Paypal only, payment before beginning. I will send an invoice for the payment.
Won’t do: -R18 -Mechas
Complicated designs will cost extra. Extra characters added at base price, limited to 3 in an image. All drawings come with a simple bg for free. If you want a more complicated background, it will cost extra, price determined by complexity.
Commissions may take up to a few months to complete, as these are done in my spare time.
Fanart/OCs okay. Please note that I hold the copyright to all drawings and you may not edit/modify/redistribute without my permission. These are for personal use only. Composition is at my discretion. Any edits will be limited to color fixes or missed details.

What do you think is more important as an artist; being original or being good? I am at bit of a standstill in the way I draw currently. One way I draw is very natural to me and I can create things that look pretty good, but they still come out looking pretty bland. But when I draw another way I can get my character designs and what not to look very stylish and interesting, but drawing in this way is very difficult and it's hard to stay consistent. Which one do you think I should pursue?
Do the hard thing. Do it until it’s not hard anymore. Do it until you ARE good at it, then try something else you’re not good at and conquer that. Repeat. That’s how you develop a style, that’s how you get better. Don’t stop when you’re still in the pupae stage!
Look, we usually use cute and/or snarky gifs to illustrate our points here, but allow me to get literary for a minute:
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
       —Robert Frost (1920)
Being an artist isn’t just about getting hired to draw stuff. It’s about choosing a life of personal development. You should never be comfortable where you are. You should always be struggling to better yourself. Those that take the road less traveled are the ones that make an impact with their art.
Let me leave you with slightly more contemporary advice:

Seeking 2D Artwork to Print for YALLWEST Gallery
I’m curating a small fan art gallery for @yallwest and am looking for 1-3 drawings per artist to print out and hang up on a wall in the high school. Should be fan art of one of the attending authors: https://www.yallwest.com/lineup/ (I know Tumblr is full of Maas and Stiefvater, but they won’t be there! Sorry!)
We’re not going to sell them, just display some prints of your existing pictures and labels that credit you/link to your website. I just need high-resolution files and some information.
I need (per piece): Your name and where you are from Piece title Book title and/or character A link to your work so people can find you online!
Also, with regards to the prints, you can choose what happens to them in the end: if I give it to the author or I just toss it.
If you are interested, please leave your e-mail in my Ask box, and I will contact you back by e-mail later this week: http://fictograph.tumblr.com/ask
Please share this with your friends!

I'm drawing pieces that look completely different. Not like style or skill level but like what they are meant for. When I put them together they just don't look at place and I can't even separate them in 2 categories. Most of the advises I see for similar situations is to pick the thing you like but I can't stick to one. Should I force myself to pick and become really good at something or should I continue doing what comes from my heart and hope I will find out what I will do with time?
Stop worrying about it right now. Go make 20 pieces. Don’t worry about them fitting together. Finish each of them, then move on to the next. When you’re done (maybe give yourself 6 months) pull them all out and look at them. Then show them to people (either in person or scan and find a crit group on Facebook) - ask for help matching which feel like they fit together (this works for style, for genre, etc). Ask which they think are the most successful. Ask a lot of artists. Trends will start to form. Weed the 20 down to the 5 best that work together, and then try going in that direction for another 6 months. At the end of a year, you’ll have a style and a body of work. You’re just thinking too hard about it right now.

How come an artist like Loish, who's art is stylized, got to work on a game like Horizon Zero Dawn, where the intend is to have a photorealistic look? It seems to go against what you all been preaching about having a portfolio that fits the right art director...
I just looked over Loish’s work for that project and some of the final images from the game. Awesome! Thanks for the heads up. I’m REALLY glad you asked this question, because it highlights something really important to understand when you’re career-stalking and idolizing artists, and when you’re building portfolios. Ready?
Sometimes you are commissioned for your style and sometimes you’re commissioned for your mind.
Loish was used as a pure concept artist here. You can see how everything she imagined for the character below went into the final, but it was redone in a completely different style. Artists who are known as both good problem solvers AND can make beautiful art can be hired twice as often as an artist who is strong only on one side.

When you are working on portfolio pieces, make sure you’re not just highlighting your technical skills, but also your problem-solving and thought process. This is critical in fields like editorial and concept art and book covers. When you’re assigning yourself portfolio pieces make sure to use real articles or  books that already exist as a jumping-off point. You can even do this with concept art. Look at someone like Kevin Wada, who started his career by a personal project reimagining the X-Men as fashion illustrations. Set yourself interesting problems and ADs notice.
