And something spicy for our final post of Trope Week. Today's discussion is about the "cursed with arousal" trope. This trope can be lighthearted and silly, pwp, surprisingly moving, sexy or dark and difficult. So how do you like it? Played for fluff or with a more serious lens? Is this one you've written? Or might? What do you think are the best examples of it?

Something I have spoken about before is an interest in why some tropes take off in one fandom but not in others. This led to me watching an interesting video essay about the phenomena of "infection" AUs that took the My Little Pony fandom by storm.
Canonically, the HP verse has diseases - including magical ones - and it has villains, including at least one who loved experimenting and creating horrors. The HP verse even has zombies or a sort when you consider the Inferi; yet, I can't think of a single fic where the villain creates a plague and our heroes must survive in a world gone wild.
So I offer this up for discussion, why is it the colourful, fluffy fandom of MLP features this trope so heavily while in our debatably more equipped fandom, it is rarely if ever seen.
I also extend a challenge to all our authors; write one and see if we can't kick-start something new.

Now, as far as tropes go in SSHG, "protectiveness" is almost always a given. In either, or both directions! So today I thought we would talk about a slightly more specific sub-trope of "Protectiveness": when one of our characters encounters the other wounded and utters some variation of "Who did this to you?" letting the reader know a grim fate awaits the wrong-doer.
I am an absolute fangirl of this trope, I'll read it with glee every single time, and I even write it myself from time to time.
Are you a fan also or does this one leave you cold? Do you like the anticipation of the villain getting their just desserts? Love to hear your thoughts below.

The next trope discussion is about "In love with a ghost or portrait". Although made for the generation before mine I remember watching The Ghost and Mrs Muir (the film, not the series) as a kid and find it unsettling and sad, despite the ostensibly happy ending. And oh my goodness do NOT get me started on the heart-breakingly sad implications of the last few seconds of Truly Madly Deeply, so it is fair to say I do not do well with this trope. I'd like to, but I don't. I always find myself looking for a loophole, a way back so the characters can be together in this life instead of having to wait for the next one, so I ask you, fans of this trope - what is it in this that works for you? How do you like it to play out? What are the best examples of it in SSHG fanfic? If you write it, what do you intend as the endgame? Must it always be bittersweet? Love to hear your thoughts below.

Our next trope up for discussion is "Forbidden Love". I will be shocked, SHOCKED I say, if too many folks dislike this one.
Surely fighting the odds is something of a trademark for this pairing. I'm a fan, are you?
Do you have favourite fics that feature it? Or perhaps more interestingly, favourite fics that subvert it? Do you write it yourself? Tell me your thoughts below.

The next trope up for discussion (Blood Magic) is one that while present, is not as common as many others in our pairing, or even the wider HP fandom. Which I find a bit odd considering how crucial the notions of blood purity and bloodlines are in the source material. Have you read any good examples? Are there fanon rules for it? Or ways it is commonly used in fics?
Just mulling it over now several plunnies have sprung forth. I'd love to hear your thoughts and headcanons in the comments below.

Our second trope up for discussion is a perennial favourite - especially in YA books and television. I give you: The Love Triangle.
I'm a sucker for this trope - it gets me every time.
So what about you? Do we love it or has it been played out?

The first trope I offer for discussion this year Love Potions. My personal taste is that I prefer this trope when it is subverted, the potion isn't what our characters think it is or it wasn't intended for them or they never really ingested it all.
Sometimes it can be pulled off well and read as cute and fluffy but I confess I usually find this one a little sinister.
How do you feel about it? Have you read a great one? How would you use it in a story? Tell me all about it below.

Hello Folks! It's Trope Week on Potions & Parchment, so there will be lots of discussion posts this week about various tropes which feature in our fandom. So what do I mean when I say "Tropes"? I mean: A well-liked, familiar or commonly used plot devices in stories. They are recognizable elements readers count on to move the story in a particular direction. How is that different to a cliche? For me, the difference is in the appeal. A trope is something audiences still like and holds appeal. Cliches have lost that, they are overused and tired.
